The Volkswagen Golf GTE is a plug-in hybrid version of the popular Golf hatchback. It combines a 148bhp turbocharged petrol engine with a battery that brings power to a total of 201bhp. Volkswagen claims fuel economy will be as much as 166mpg, while CO2 emissions are just 39g/km, which means you'll pay zero road tax.
The GTE is capable of travelling 31 miles on battery power alone, so it's feasible that you could commute without using any petrol if your journey to work is just around town. The GTE costs from £33,755 before the Government's £5,000 plug-in and electric car grant.

I'm in Majorca on a special event run by Volkswagen, where I'll get to test out the whole new range of Volkswagen Golfs. First two I've managed to get my greedy little hands on, are the the GTE, the plugin hybrid, and the e-Golf, the all electric version. Obviously these cars get the updated design as well but, how do they compare to the petrol and diesel cousins? Let's find out as I drive around sunny Spain!

Fast Autobahn acceleration test of the 2014/2015 Volkswagen Golf 7 GTE with the twin engine concept delivering 204 hp and up to 350 Nm of torque. While the 1.4 TSI with 150 hp is already not really slow, they added the 102 hp electric motor out of the e-Golf to make this a prober GT(E). As you can see, this car really pulls once you put it in "B" (Boost?) and GTE-mode. I don't really know why it is significantly faster than what VW claims but it also feels like more than 200 hp! Especially as I tested the Golf 7 GTD and GTI (220hp) I can tell that this hybrid is very close to the GTI! Besides that you get an "E-Mode" that let's you accelerate pretty decent up to 130 km/h and drive totally quiet in cities....I personally like it! On top of that you get the quick shifting DSG (6-speed) that also shifts in E-Mode...very cool! Point of view test drive of the VW Golf GTE Plug-in Hybrid. The Golf GTE has a 1.4-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a power 150 hp and 250 Nm of torque. It also has an electric motor with a power of 102 hp and 330 Nm of torque. The combined system output is 204 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The car is equipped with a 6-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic gearbox. The Golf GTE goes from 0-100 km/h in 7,6 sec and has a maximum speed of 217 km/h or 222 with boost function. The electric range is 50 km according to VW.
Most of the video was shot in GTE mode for sporty driving. The scene in the forrest was shot in electric mode only.
The test car was also equipped with park assist. You can see a demo of the park assistant in the video. The car does the steering, but the driver operates the gas and brake.

Volkswagen Golf
The Volkswagen Golf is a small family car produced by the German manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across seven generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
The original Golf Mk1 was a front-wheel drive, front-engined replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and the world's second best-selling model, with more than 29 million built by 2012.
Most production of the Golf was initially in the 3-door hatchback style. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, station wagon (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, 2011–present), and a Golf-derived notchback sedan, variously called Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Vento (from 1992) or Volkswagen Bora (from 1999). GTE
GTE Corporation, formerly General Telephone & Electric Corporation (1955-1982) was the largest independent telephone company in the United States during the days of the Bell System. The company operated from 1926, with roots tracing further back than that, until 2000, when it merged with Bell Atlantic; the combined company took the name Verizon.
Originally founded as Associated Telephone Utilities, it went bankrupt in 1933 during the Great Depression, and reorganized as General Telephone in 1934. In 1991, it acquired the third largest independent, Continental Telephone (ConTel). They also owned Automatic Electric, a telephone equipment supplier similar in many ways to Western Electric, and Sylvania Lighting, the only non-communications-oriented company under GTE ownership. GTE provided local telephone service to a large number of areas of the U.S. through operating companies, much as American Telephone & Telegraph provided local telephone service through its 22 Bell Operating Companies.

Golf
Golf is a club and ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible.
Golf is one of the few ball games that do not require a standardized playing area. The game is played on a course with an arranged progression of either nine or 18 holes. Each hole on the course must contain a tee box to start from, and a putting green containing the actual cup. There are other standard forms of terrain in between, such as the fairway, rough, and hazards, but each hole on a course is unique in its specific layout and arrangement.
Golf is played for the lowest number of strokes by an individual, known as stroke play, or the lowest score on the most individual holes in a complete round by an individual or team, known as match play. Stroke play is the most commonly seen format at all levels.

Volkswagen Golf Mk7
The Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (also known as the Golf VII) is a compact car, the seventh generation of the Volkswagen Golf and the successor to the Volkswagen Golf Mk6. It was announced in Berlin on 4 September 2012, before a public launch at the 2012 Paris Auto Show. Cars reached Volkswagen dealers in the Golf's European domestic market on 10 November 2012.
The Golf Mk7 uses the same MQB platform as the third-generation Audi A3, SEAT León and Škoda Octavia. At its introduction in 2013, it won the Car of the Year Japan Award, the first time it was awarded to a European product.
Features
Compared to the previous generation, the Golf Mk7 has a roomier cabin, with greater shoulder room for the front and rear passengers, rear legroom and boot space.

Robert Llewellyn
Robert Llewellyn (born 10 March 1956, in Northampton, Northamptonshire) is an English actor, comedian and writer best known as the mechanoid Kryten in the hit TV sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf and as a presenter of the TV engineering gameshow Scrapheap Challenge. He is a science and technology enthusiast, a promoter of renewable technologies and electric cars and an atheist and skeptic who frequently gives talks at science and technology events. He is also active online.
Early career
Llewellyn's first foray into the world of show business started out as a hobby, organising a few amateur cabaret evenings in a riverside warehouse overlooking Tower Bridge in London. The shows were a great success and he eventually helped form an alternative comedy theatre group called the Joeys. Within six months he had stopped working as a shoemaker and started performing professionally with the group alongside Bernie Evans, Nigel Ordish and Graham Allum. The group toured Britain and France in the early 1980s with an initial idea of exploring sexual politics between men. Llewellyn wrote much of the material, and also began writing novels. The group split in 1985, having toured for years and done thousands of shows.

Fast Autobahn acceleration test of the 2014/2015 Volkswagen Golf 7 GTE with the twin engine concept delivering 204 hp and up to 350 Nm of torque. While the 1.4 TSI with 150 hp is already not really slow, they added the 102 hp electric motor out of the e-Golf to make this a prober GT(E). As you can see, this car really pulls once you put it in "B" (Boost?) and GTE-mode. I don't really know why it is significantly faster than what VW claims but it also feels like more than 200 hp! Especially as I tested the Golf 7 GTD and GTI (220hp) I can tell that this hybrid is very close to the GTI! Besides that you get an "E-Mode" that let's you accelerate pretty decent up to 130 km/h and drive totally quiet in cities....I personally like it! On top of that you get the quick shifting DSG (6-speed) that also shifts in E-Mode...very cool! Point of view test drive of the VW Golf GTE Plug-in Hybrid. The Golf GTE has a 1.4-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a power 150 hp and 250 Nm of torque. It also has an electric motor with a power of 102 hp and 330 Nm of torque. The combined system output is 204 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The car is equipped with a 6-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic gearbox. The Golf GTE goes from 0-100 km/h in 7,6 sec and has a maximum speed of 217 km/h or 222 with boost function. The electric range is 50 km according to VW. Most of the video was shot in GTE mode for sporty driving. The scene in the forrest was shot in electric mode only. The test car was also equipped with park assist. You can see a demo of the park assistant in the video. The car does the steering, but the driver operates the gas and brake. The Volkswagen Golf GTE is a plug-in hybrid version of the popular Golf hatchback. It combines a 148bhp turbocharged petrol engine with a battery that brings power to a total of 201bhp. Volkswagen claims fuel economy will be as much as 166mpg, while CO2 emissions are just 39g/km, which means you'll pay zero road tax.
The GTE is capable of travelling 31 miles on battery power alone, so it's feasible that you could commute without using any petrol if your journey to work is just around town. The GTE costs from £33,755 before the Government's £5,000 plug-in and electric car grant.

Fast Autobahn acceleration test of the 2014/2015 Volkswagen Golf 7 GTE with the twin engine concept delivering 204 hp and up to 350 Nm of torque. While the 1.4 TSI with 150 hp is already not really slow, they added the 102 hp electric motor out of the e-Golf to make this a prober GT(E). As you can see, this car really pulls once you put it in "B" (Boost?) and GTE-mode. I don't really know why it is significantly faster than what VW claims but it also feels like more than 200 hp! Especially as I tested the Golf 7 GTD and GTI (220hp) I can tell that this hybrid is very close to the GTI! Besides that you get an "E-Mode" that let's you accelerate pretty decent up to 130 km/h and drive totally quiet in cities....I personally like it! On top of that you get the quick shifting DSG (6-speed) that also shifts in E-Mode...very cool! Fast Autobahn acceleration test of the 2014/2015 Volkswagen Golf 7 GTE with the twin engine concept delivering 204 hp and up to 350 Nm of torque. While the 1.4 TSI with 150 hp is already not really slow, they added the 102 hp electric motor out of the e-Golf to make this a prober GT(E). As you can see, this car really pulls once you put it in "B" (Boost?) and GTE-mode. I don't really know why it is significantly faster than what VW claims but it also feels like more than 200 hp! Especially as I tested the Golf 7 GTD and GTI (220hp) I can tell that this hybrid is very close to the GTI! Point of view test drive of the VW Golf GTE Plug-in Hybrid. The Golf GTE has a 1.4-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a power 150 hp and 250 Nm of torque. It also has an electric motor with a power of 102 hp and 330 Nm of torque. The combined system output is 204 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The car is equipped with a 6-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic gearbox. The Golf GTE goes from 0-100 km/h in 7,6 sec and has a maximum speed of 217 km/h or 222 with boost function. The electric range is 50 km according to VW.
Most of the video was shot in GTE mode for sporty driving. The scene in the forrest was shot in electric mode only.
The test car was also equipped with park assist. You can see a demo of the park assistant in the video. The car does the steering, but the driver operates the gas and brake.
