A nature reserve (natural reserve, bioreserve, (natural/nature) preserve or (national/nature) conserve) is a protected area of importance for wildlife, flora, fauna or features of geological or other special interest, which is reserved and managed for conservation and to provide special opportunities for study or research. Nature reserves may be designated by government institutions in some countries, or by private landowners, such as charities and research institutions, regardless of nationality. Nature reserves fall into different IUCN categories depending on the level of protection afforded by local laws.
Cultural practices that roughly equate to the establishment and maintenance of reserved areas for animals date back to antiquity, with King Devanampiya Tissa of Sri Lanka establishing one of the world's earliest wildlife sanctuaries in the 3rd century BC. Early reservations often had a religious underpinning, such as the 'evil forest' areas of West Africa which were forbidden to humans, who were threatened with spiritual attack if they went there. Sacred areas taboo from human entry to fishing and hunting are known by many ancient cultures worldwide.
Nature, in the broadest sense, is the natural, physical, or material world or universe. "Nature" can refer to the phenomena of the physical world, and also to life in general. The study of nature is a large part of science. Although humans are part of nature, human activity is often understood as a separate category from other natural phenomena.
The word nature is derived from the Latin word natura, or "essential qualities, innate disposition", and in ancient times, literally meant "birth".Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek word physis (φύσις), which originally related to the intrinsic characteristics that plants, animals, and other features of the world develop of their own accord. The concept of nature as a whole, the physical universe, is one of several expansions of the original notion; it began with certain core applications of the word φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has steadily gained currency ever since. This usage continued during the advent of modern scientific method in the last several centuries.
Nature reserves deemed to be of national importance, or controlled by a national-level body may be known as national nature reserves.
Zhalong Nature Reserve in Heilongjiang province is designated as a national nature reserve by the Chinese government.
Soos National Nature Reserve was designated as a nature reserve by the government of the Czech Republic.
Beauchêne Island was designated as a national nature reserve by the government of the Falkland Islands in 1964.
Néouvielle National Nature Reserve
Point of Ayre is designated as a national nature reserve by the Manx government.
The North-Ossetian National Nature Reserve in the Caucasus Mountains is designated as a national nature reserve by the Russian government.
In the United Kingdom, "national nature reserves" are those designed by one of the national conservancy bodies, Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, Scottish Natural Heritage, or the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. In total, there are 411 national nature reserves in the UK.
Reserve or reserves may refer to:
The Highland is a historic multiunit residence at 66 Highland Avenue in Somerville, Massachusetts. The three story brick building was built in 1892 to a design by architect Samuel D. Kelley. It is one of the city's more elegant late 19th-century apartment houses, built during its rapid expansion in the late 19th century. The building listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
The Highland is set on the south side of Highland Avenue on Central Hill, directly opposite the city's high school. It is a three story brick building, Richardsonian Romanesque in style, with brownstone trim, and a conical roof on its corner turret. Brownstone beltcourses, varying in thickness, separate the basement, first, and second floors, and also separate the top of the third floor from the cornice, which has a band of dentil brickwork below the modillioned roof line. The main facade is six bays wide, divided into two similar sections having a rounded bay at the right. The main entrance is set in the third bay from the right beneath a large round brownstone arch.

The Highland Titles Nature Reserve is showcased by The Scotsman's Business Player Highland Titles is amongst Scotland's most dynamic and innovative businesses, using best business practices that really work. Highland Titles is managing to innovate, thrive, expand and grow despite the tough trading environment. Highland Titles has an unusual business model, in that the supporters of its Nature Reserve receive a souvenir plot of the Nature Reserve instead of the membership card that other similar bodies hand out. Owned by a Guernsey charitable trust, Highland Titles supports local good causes and helps to increase the number of visitors to this area, increasing the turnover of other local businesses, some of whom in return offer discounts to the lairds of Glencoe, as supporters style them...
A massive alligator was spotted walking across an open pathway a few feet away from passers-by at a wildlife preservation centre near Lakeland, Florida, over the weekend.
The Oostvaardersplassen is a nature reserve in the Netherlands, which is managed by the State Forestry Service (Staatsbosbeheer). Covering about 56 square kilometres (22 sq mi), it is noted as an example of rewilding. It is in a polder which was created in 1968, but in spite of the environment having little time to develop, by 1989 it had international importance as a Ramsar wetland. The Oostvaardersplassen can be divided into a wet area in the northwest and a dry area in the southeast. Given that the Oostvaardersplassen is below sea level, many of its primary processes have been regulated. A dyke was made around it to prevent the process of groundwater-related subsidence. The cattle, deer and horses have multiplied in the Oostvaardersplassen. However there is a limit to the number of a...

HOW TO MAKE A FOREST FROM A PATCH OF GRASS Winner of WWF Short Film Contest. My daughter created a tiny nature reserve in our garden to save the wildlife in the grass from the lawn mower. We stopped to talk about it, and then spent the afternoon looking for wildlife in the grass. What she found really amazed me: so many little creatures in a tiny patch of grass. Wildlife often seems remote and disconnected from our day-to-day lives, and our impact on the environment as individuals seems minimal. But my daughter's idea - that an individual can save a tiny patch of the earth suddenly changed the way I think, and inspired me to do something. So, I'm sending out this thought in the hope that others may be inspired to appreciate the diversity of life on earth (even the slugs and snails...
After five trips to the game reserve, some test footage and a 10 day holiday in Mossel Bay we ended up with 1 terabyte of raw stock footage. I've now edited this down to 3 minutes. Everything was graded with the new Resolve 10. Finally the pink fringing problem is completely gone with Resolve 10! Another great new feature is a special RAW sharpening tool designed for RAW footage that really improves the quality. After filming and grading 1 terabyte of footage with zero drop frames or any problems whatsoever I am starting to trust Magic Lantern RAW firmware more and more. I am still running an old build of 27 July. It can only get better from here on! Once you get to know the workflow, working with RAW footage is a breeze. I think of RAW as Proress 444 with a conversion step in betwe...

Filmed in september 2010 in one of Norway's most beautiful mountain regions. Surprised by the unusually early snowfall we were very fortunate to have all the autumn colors framed by a blanket of white snow :-) The extra bonus was that my 14 year old son was with me on this trip. Filmed with Canon EOS 5D mkII PS; This film is playing in 1080 resolution with scaling on
An intensely personal project, this is a film about Coed-y-Bedw, a nature reserve hidden away in the woodland behind my home in South Wales. It's a place that I go to unwind, to take time to think and to give thanks for all the little things that are in the end so much greater than me alone. It's fitting then that I made this film as a labour of love and as a homage to the reserve. I am deeply indebted to Dr Mary Gillham M.B.E for agreeing to take part, as also to Cliff Woodhead and Robert Jones Parry.
Brockholes is a mini-Eden that exists just outside of Preston. The nature reserve is a fantastic visual location and when it comes to animals and plants, very biodiverse. The lakes and forests provide a range of habitats and the conservation volunteers have tried to help boost the quality of the environment. Brockholes is a clear example of how humans and nature can live side by side.
