Similarities Between Greek and Armenian
How similar are Greek and Armenian? They are both language isolates that began on very close branches of the Indo-European family before evolving separately. Aside from common words, as two distinct Indo-European languages, they share many traits. Armenians and Greeks also share many historical and cultural similarities which has had an impact on their languages as well.

What makes the ARMENIAN language so UNIQUE? (EN/SP/RUS subs)
Armenian is an Indo-European language spoken mainly in Armenia and in Nagorno-Karabakh. One of the prominent characteristics of the Armenian identity is its language. The precise origins of the language are a little obscure, as it’s considered one of the world’s ancient languages. The Armenian language has a unique writing system. In ancient calculations, you can see Armenian letters instead of numbers, as each letter had a corresponding number. Also, the Armenian language has completely different punctuation
marks from Western languages.

Language family: Indo-European
is an Indo-European language that is the only language in the Armenian branch. It is the official language of Armenia. Historically being spoken throughout the Armenian Highlands, today, Armenian is widely spoken throughout the Armenian diaspora. Armenian is written in its own writing system, the Armenian alphabet, introduced in 405 AD by the priest Mesrop Mashtots.
Armenian is an independent branch of the Indo-European languages. It is of interest to linguists for its distinctive phonological developments within that family. Armenian exhibits more satemization than centumization, although it is not classified as belonging to either of these subgroups. Some linguists tentatively conclude that Armenian, Greek (and Phrygian) and Indo-Iranian were dialectally close to each other; within this hypothetical dialect group, Proto-Armenian was situated between Proto-Greek (centum subgroup) and Proto-Indo-Iranian (satem subgroup).Ronald I. Kim has noted unique morphological developments connecting Armenian to Balto-Slavic languages.
Armenia was a monolingual country by the 2nd century BC at the latest.[9] Its language has a long literary history, with a 5th-century Bible translation as its oldest surviving text. Its vocabulary has historically been influenced by Western Middle Iranian languages, particularly Parthian, and to a lesser extent by Greek, Persian, and Syriac. There are two standardized modern literary forms, Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian, with which most contemporary dialects are mutually intelligible.
Although Armenians were known to history much earlier (for example, they were mentioned in the 6th-century BC Behistun Inscription and in Xenophon's 4th century BC history, The Anabasis), the oldest surviving Armenian-language text is the 5th century AD Bible translation of Mesrop Mashtots, who created the Armenian alphabet in 405, at which time it had 36 letters. He is also credited by some with the creation of the Georgian alphabet and the Caucasian Albanian alphabet.
While Armenian constitutes the sole member of the Armenian branch of the Indo-European family, Aram Kossian has suggested that the hypothetical Mushki language may have been a (now extinct) Armenic language.

Greek (ελληνικά) is an independent branch of the Indo-European family of languages with a written record of over 3,000 years, easily making it the oldest documented Indo-European language. The Greek alphabet, originating from the Phoenician script, was the basis of numerous other scripts, such as Latin, Cyrillic, Coptic, Gothic, and Armenian. The Greek language has virtually impacted other languages in every corner of the world, being an important component of Western civilization, the Christian religion, and the language of some of the fundamental texts of science, astronomy, and mathematics. The Greek language today holds official status in Greece and Cyprus, and is recognized as a minority language in
Albania, Armenia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, and Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Armenian language is the official language of Armenia and is widely spoken throughout the Armenian diaspora.

The Armenian language is one of the oldest on Earth and dates back to Babylonian times. It’s virtually the same now as it was back then, and can all be read by present-day speakers of the language. It’s an independent branch of the Indo-European language family, so occasionally you will come across words that are similar to their counterparts in Latin-based languages. Here are all of the words and phrases Lusine taught me to say, along with their Armenian translations:
-Bye: Ցտեսություն
-How are you?: Ինչպե՞ս ես

During our lesson, Lusine also told me that the Basque people in Spain migrated from the Armenian highlands, so some of the roots of their words are very similar to those in Armenia. I also learned that the word for “coffee” is named after the sound you make when you sip it!
Special thanks to my friends at Armenia Travel for their kindness, hospitality, and for arranging my trip. I couldn’t have done it without them!
Also, if you would like to visit Ashtarak, please contact Lusine.

On my ninth day in Armenia, during my overnight stay at Yeganyans Bed & Breakfast in Ashtarak, I took some time to try to learn some of the Armenian language from my friend and guide Lusine! Join me on my latest Armenian adventure: learning the Armenian language, in particular, words and phrases!

After our amazing feast at Yeganyans Guest House & Wine Yard, we sat back down at our table so Lusine could teach me some Armenian words and phrases. I was nearing the end of my time in Armenia, but I had fallen in love with the country in the time I had been there. The people are so kind and hospitable, the food is amazing, and the historical sites are breathtaking.

During our lesson, Lusine also told me that the Basque people in Spain migrated from the Armenian highlands, so some of the roots of their words are very similar to those in Armenia. I also learned that the word for “coffee” is named after the sound you make when you sip it!
Special thanks to my friends at Armenia Travel for their kindness, hospitality, and for arranging my trip. I couldn’t have done it without them!
Also, if you would like to visit Ashtarak, please contact Lusine.
