PIAZZA SAN MARCO, known in English as St Mark's Square, is the principal public square of Venice, where it is generally known just as "the Piazza". All other urban spaces in the city (except the Piazzetta San Marco and the Piazzale Roma) are called "campi" (fields).
Basilica di San Marco / St Mark's Basilica
is the most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples of Byzantine architecture. Originally it was the chapel of the Doge's, and has only been the city's cathedral since 1807, when it became the seat of the Patriarch of Venice.
Campanile di San Marco / St Mark's Campanile
is the bell tower of St Mark's Basilica, one of the most recognizable symbols of the city.
Torre dell'Orologio / St Mark's Clock Tower
Both the tower and the clock date from the last decade of the 15th century, though the mechanism of the clock has subsequently been much altered. To the right of the clock-tower is the closed church of San Basso.
The Procuratie (literally, "procuracies") are three connected buildings on St Mark's Square in Venice. They are historic buildings over arcades, the last of them completed, to finish off the square, under Napoleon's occupation. They were built in the early 16th century, formerly the homes and offices of the Procurators of St. Mark, high officers of state in the days of the republic of Venice.

Palazzo Ducale / Doge's Palace
was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice, opening as a museum in 1923.
Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana / National Library of St Mark's
is one of the earliest surviving public manuscript depositories in the country, holding one of the greatest classical texts collections in the world. The library was provided with a building designed by Jacopo Sansovino. Building started in 1537 and it was extended, after the death of Sansovino, by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1588/91.
Two large granite columns carry symbols of the two patron saints of Venice. The first is Saint Theodore, who was the patron of the city before St Mark, holding a spear and with a crocodile to represent the dragon which he was said to have slain. This is made up of parts of antique statues and is a copy (the original is kept in the Doges Palace). The second (eastern) column has a creature representing a winged lion — the Lion of Venice — which is the symbol of St Mark.

The library was provided with a building designed by Jacopo Sansovino. Building started in 1537 and it was extended, after the death of Sansovino, by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1588/91.
Two large granite columns carry symbols of the two patron saints of Venice. The first is Saint Theodore, who was the patron of the city before St Mark, holding a spear and with a crocodile to represent the dragon which he was said to have slain. This is made up of parts of antique statues and is a copy (the original is kept in the Doges Palace). The second (eastern) column has a creature representing a winged lion — the Lion of Venice — which is the symbol of St Mark.

The rearrangement was for the meeting of Pope Alexander III and the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.

Il cuore della città di Venezia è Piazza San Marco, per definizione l'unica a meritarsi il nome di piazza: le altre piazze sono chiamate infatti "campi" o "campielli". La Basilica di San Marco appare al centro della piazza, colorata d'oro e rivestita da mosaici che raccontano la storia di Venezia, assieme ai meravigliosi bassorilievi che raffigurano i mesi dell'anno. Sopra la porta principale, i quattro cavalli bronzei di Costantinopoli, (sono copie: gli originali sono nel museo di San Marco) ricordano la quarta Crociata del 1204. La sua forma a croce greca è sovrastata da cinque enormi cupole. È la terza Basilica dedicata a San Marco che sorge in questo luogo: le prime due andarono distrutte. Pare che questa versione sia stata ispirata dalla chiesa dei Santi Apostoli di Costantinopoli. L'interno è rivestito di mosaici a fondo oro che raffigurano passi biblici e allegorici. Inizialmente, era la cappella dei Dogi della Repubblica di Venezia.

La Basilica di San Marco appare al centro della piazza, colorata d'oro e rivestita da mosaici che raccontano la storia di Venezia, assieme ai meravigliosi bassorilievi che raffigurano i mesi dell'anno. Sopra la porta principale, i quattro cavalli bronzei di Costantinopoli, (sono copie: gli originali sono nel museo di San Marco) ricordano la quarta Crociata del 1204. La sua forma a croce greca è sovrastata da cinque enormi cupole. È la terza Basilica dedicata a San Marco che sorge in questo luogo: le prime due andarono distrutte. Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana / National Library of St Mark's
is one of the earliest surviving public manuscript depositories in the country, holding one of the greatest classical texts collections in the world. The library was provided with a building designed by Jacopo Sansovino. Building started in 1537 and it was extended, after the death of Sansovino, by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1588/91.
Two large granite columns carry symbols of the two patron saints of Venice. The first is Saint Theodore, who was the patron of the city before St Mark, holding a spear and with a crocodile to represent the dragon which he was said to have slain. This is made up of parts of antique statues and is a copy (the original is kept in the Doges Palace). The second (eastern) column has a creature representing a winged lion — the Lion of Venice — which is the symbol of St Mark.

The library was provided with a building designed by Jacopo Sansovino. Building started in 1537 and it was extended, after the death of Sansovino, by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1588/91.
Two large granite columns carry symbols of the two patron saints of Venice. The first is Saint Theodore, who was the patron of the city before St Mark, holding a spear and with a crocodile to represent the dragon which he was said to have slain. This is made up of parts of antique statues and is a copy (the original is kept in the Doges Palace). The second (eastern) column has a creature representing a winged lion — the Lion of Venice — which is the symbol of St Mark.

Basilica dei Frari (Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari)
The glorious gothic Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, constructed around 1330, is primarily associated with the name of Titian, Venice's painter son who is buried here, alongside the city's celebrated sculptor, Antonio Canova. Titian made his reputation and crowned his early years by painting the huge altar piece, The Assumption of the Virgin, for the Franciscan brothers of the Frari in 1518. Titian also executed the painting over the Pesaro family altar in the north aisle. The inclusion of the flag and Turk in the painting alludes to Bishop Pesaro's victory over the Turks at Santa Maura. Titian's tomb, located in the south aisle, faces the large marble pyramid created for Canova, depicting St Mark's lion paying homage to the dead sculptor. Ironically, the design, executed by Canova's pupils, was based on Canova's own plans for a new monument to Titian.

Built on a plan of a Greek cross, its Eastern appearance is enhanced by golden mosaics, originally created by craftsmen from the Byzantine court at Ravenna. The interior houses many of Venice's greatest treasures, including the venerated icon of the Madonna Nicopeia. The golden screen behind the high altar - the crypt in which St Mark is supposed to be buried - is the Pala d'Oro, beautifully crafted with sapphires, emeralds and rubies and inset with enamels from Constantinople. Before leaving St Mark's, visitors should pause to admire the 12th-century pavement, a resplendent mosaic of glass and marble. At 318 ft (97m) high, visitors prepared to make the lengthy climb can look out over the rooftops of the city. In a strange twist, the view from the top can be good enough on a clear day to catch a glimpse of the distant dolomites, but doesn't allow for a view of any of the canals. The tower collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt exactly as before.

The glorious gothic Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, constructed around 1330, is primarily associated with the name of Titian, Venice's painter son who is buried here, alongside the city's celebrated sculptor, Antonio Canova. Titian made his reputation and crowned his early years by painting the huge altar piece, The Assumption of the Virgin, for the Franciscan brothers of the Frari in 1518. Titian also executed the painting over the Pesaro family altar in the north aisle. The inclusion of the flag and Turk in the painting alludes to Bishop Pesaro's victory over the Turks at Santa Maura. Titian's tomb, located in the south aisle, faces the large marble pyramid created for Canova, depicting St Mark's lion paying homage to the dead sculptor. Ironically, the design, executed by Canova's pupils, was based on Canova's own plans for a new monument to Titian.

Basilica di San Marco (St Mark's Basilica)
The golden Byzantine St Mark's Basilica was founded in the ninth century as a shrine for the relics of St Mark. Built on a plan of a Greek cross, its Eastern appearance is enhanced by golden mosaics, originally created by craftsmen from the Byzantine court at Ravenna. The interior houses many of Venice's greatest treasures, including the venerated icon of the Madonna Nicopeia. The golden screen behind the high altar - the crypt in which St Mark is supposed to be buried - is the Pala d'Oro, beautifully crafted with sapphires, emeralds and rubies and inset with enamels from Constantinople. Before leaving St Mark's, visitors should pause to admire the 12th-century pavement, a resplendent mosaic of glass and marble. Campanile di San Marco (Bell Tower)
The bell tower, which is located to one side of St Mark's Square, is the tallest structure in Venice and offers a unique view of this fabulous city. At 318 ft (97m) high, visitors prepared to make the lengthy climb can look out over the rooftops of the city. In a strange twist, the view from the top can be good enough on a clear day to catch a glimpse of the distant dolomites, but doesn't allow for a view of any of the canals. The tower collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt exactly as before.

San Marco piazza is a gorgeous square surrounded by the Palazzo Ducale, Basilica San Marco, The clock tower, Museo Correr and having in the middle The bell tower, besides lots of restaurants dedicated to the tourist willing to spend lots of money for items priced double that what they should be.
Yes, that is what you call a tourist trap, however the 'attractions' give you a relief in the shape of reduced tickets via VisitMuve.it where you can purchase your entrance to some 11 attractions paying only 24 euros and skipping the long queues tourists tend to form. Even the entrance to Basilica San Marco is advisable to be bought online on their website, printing the pages with the bar code and avoiding the queues just like with VisitMuve.it tickets and barcode.

is one of the earliest surviving public manuscript depositories in the country, holding one of the greatest classical texts collections in the world. The library was provided with a building designed by Jacopo Sansovino. Building started in 1537 and it was extended, after the death of Sansovino, by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1588/91.
Two large granite columns carry symbols of the two patron saints of Venice. The first is Saint Theodore, who was the patron of the city before St Mark, holding a spear and with a crocodile to represent the dragon which he was said to have slain. This is made up of parts of antique statues and is a copy (the original is kept in the Doges Palace). The second (eastern) column has a creature representing a winged lion — the Lion of Venice — which is the symbol of St Mark.

Piazza San Marco (often known in English as St Mark's Square), is the principal public square of Venice, Italy, where it is generally known just as "the Piazza". All other urban spaces in the city (except the Piazzetta and the Piazzale Roma) are called "campi" (fields). The Piazzetta (the 'little Piazza') is an extension of the Piazza towards the lagoon in its south east corner. The two spaces together form the social, religious and political centre of Venice and are commonly considered together.
