Breaking into a new sport climbing grade can be an incredibly difficult challenge, but consolidating that breakthrough can be even harder. Having climbed his first 9a+/5.15a 'Realization/Biographie' in 2014, EpicTV Shop climber Jonathan Siegrist set his sights on another classic of the grade; Spain's 'La Rambla.' To prepare for the route, Jonathan spent the winter in Colorado, training specifically for this project and when he finally got to Spain this Spring, he was no less regimented in his approach, taking the project step by step. In December 2006, Chris Sharma did the third ascent of 'La Rambla'. This pretty hard route [5.15a] is located in Siurana, Catalunya (Spain). Chris Sharma climbed with Dave Graham, Dani Andrada and Yuji Hirayama and Edu Marin, who did the second ascent of the route, one day before Chris !! La Rambla (Catalan pronunciation:"Las Ramblas") is a street in central Barcelona, popular with both tourists and locals alike. A tree-lined pedestrian mall, it stretches for 1.2 kilometers between Barri Gòtic and El Raval, connecting Plaça de Catalunya in the centre with the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell.
La Rambla can be considered a series of shorter streets, each differently named, hence the plural form Les Rambles (the original Catalan form; in Spanish it is Las Ramblas). From the Plaça de Catalunya toward the harbour, the street is successively called the Rambla de Canaletes, the Rambla dels Estudis, the Rambla de Sant Josep, the Rambla dels Caputxins, and the Rambla de Santa Mònica. Construction of the Maremàgnum in the early 1990s resulted in a continuation of La Rambla on a wooden walkway into the harbour called the Rambla de Mar.
Nearby is the Maritime Museum (Museu Marítim), specifically devoted to naval history in the Mediterranean, which displays a full-scale replica of an ancient galley battle. The museum is housed in the Royal Dockyards (in Catalan, Drassanes) of the medieval era where the ships that connected the extensive dominions of the Crown of Aragon with other ports of the Mediterranean were built. The old port offers other attractions such as leisure venues, restaurants, an IMAX theater, and an aquarium.
In the historical center, close to La Rambla, may be found La Catedral de Barcelona (the Cathedral of Santa Eulàlia), the recently restored (1968--72) Gothic cathedral and seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona, the Plaza Sant Jaume that houses the buildings of the Generalitat of Catalonia and Barcelona's City Council, as well as the narrow streets of the Gothic quarter, the Raval and the Born area.
The promenade is crowded during the day and until late in the night. It is full of kiosks that sell newspapers and souvenirs, flowers and birds, street performers, cafes, restaurants and shops. Near the port are found smaller local markets and the shop-fronts of painters and draftsmen. Strolling along La Rambla one can see such historic buildings as the Palace of the Virreina and La Boqueria market and the famous Liceu Theatre (Liceo in Spanish), in which operas and ballets are staged. One of the side streets, only a few metres long, leads to the Royal Square (Plaça Reial), a plaza with palm trees and porticoed buildings containing many pubs and restaurants, and in which stamp and coin collectors gather on the weekends.
La Rambla can be crowded, especially during the height of the tourist season. Most of the time there are many more tourists than locals occupying the Rambla, which fact has changed the shopping selection, as well as the character of the street in general.[1] For this reason also it has become a prime target of pick pockets.[2]
The Spanish poet Federico García Lorca once said that La Rambla was "the only street in the world which I wish would never end." The name rambla refers to an intermittent watercourse in both Catalan and Spanish. This is reflected in the undulating design on the pavement which is also decorated with a mosaic by Joan Miró. This work was the second of three sculptures that were commissioned to welcome tourists.[3] The first was at the airport and had been commissioned in 1968. The other was Dona i Ocell in the centre of the city.

16-year-old French phenom Enzo Oddo has climbed yet another 5.15 with his repeat of La Rambla original in Siurana, Spain. The route was first climbed before Oddo was even born by Alex Huber to a stopping point 3/4 up the wall, and it was subsequently extended by Ramón Julián Puigblanque. The accepted grade for this route these days seems to be 5.15a, but Rock and Ice has a good recap of this history of the route including Huber's thoughts on how the grade of this route and many others has been inflated over the years:
"It's a fact that La Rambla increased in grade from 8c+ (5.14c) to 9a+ (5.15a). Often people believe this is due to the route extension, but in reality the difficulties do not change substantially with this extension."

Chris Sharma
Chris Omprakash Sharma (born April 23, 1981) is an American rock climber. In 2007, NPR wrote that Sharma had been described as the world's best rock climber.
History
Sharma was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California, the son of Gita Jahn and Bob Sharma. He started rock climbing when he was 12 at the Pacific Edge climbing gym. Sharma went to Mount Madonna school and attended Soquel High School for one year.
At age 14, Sharma won the Bouldering Nationals ∞. A year later, he completed the first ascent of Necessary Evil 5.14c (8c+) in the Virgin River Gorge, the highest-rated climb in North America at the time.
Sharma then moved to Bishop, California, where he climbed The Mandala, a boulder problem graded V12.
In July 2001, Sharma completed the extension of the established route Biographie in Ceüse, located in the Hautes-Alpes Department of France and renamed it Realization, ignoring the French tradition that equippers and not climbers name routes. At the time of the first ascent, Biographie was widely considered to be the first consensus 5.15a (9a+) in the world. He has since established or completed many routes at or above 5.15 (9a+), including La Rambla and Es Pontas (a deep water soloing project in Mallorca). In 2008 Sharma climbed the 250-foot line (76 m), Jumbo Love, at Clark Mountain in California, claiming 5.15b (9b) for the grade.

Port Vell
Port Vell (Catalan pronunciation: [ˈpɔrd ˈbeʎ], literally in English 'Old Harbor') is a waterfront harbor in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, and part of the Port of Barcelona. It was built as part of an urban renewal program prior to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Before this, it was a run-down area of empty warehouses, railroad yards, and factories. 16 million people visit the complex each year.
It is now a focal point of the city and tourist attraction, containing the Maremàgnum (a mall containing shops, a multiplex cinema, bars and restaurants), IMAX Port Vell and Europe's largest aquarium containing 8000 Fish and 11 sharks contained in 22 basins filled with 6 million litres (1.5 million gallons) of sea water. A pedestrian walkway, Rambla de Mar, connects La Rambla to Port Vell. It incorporates a swing bridge, in order to allow ships to enter and exit the harbour.

Ancient history
Around the 4th century BC Barcelona was occupied by the Laietani. A tribe of Iberian people who inhabited the coastline between the Llobregat and Tordera rivers. Barkeno, on Montjuïc, was their main settlement. These people traded with the Greek colony in Empúries, building large grain stores for the purpose.

In December 2006, Chris Sharma did the third ascent of 'La Rambla'. This pretty hard route [5.15a] is located in Siurana, Catalunya (Spain). Chris Sharma climbed with Dave Graham, Dani Andrada and Yuji Hirayama and Edu Marin, who did the second ascent of the route, one day before Chris !! Chris Sharma redpointed the route after less than 20 tries... A film by Laurent Triay. En Décembre 2006, Chris Sharma a fait la troisième ascension de 'La Rambla'. Don't miss out those spots! La Rambla (Catalan pronunciation:"Las Ramblas") is a street in central Barcelona, popular with both tourists and locals alike. A tree-lined pedestrian mall, it stretches for 1.2 kilometers between Barri Gòtic and El Raval, connecting Plaça de Catalunya in the centre with the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell. La Rambla can be considered a series of shorter streets, each differently named, hence the plural form Les Rambles (the original Catalan form; in Spanish it is Las Ramblas). Enzo Oddo: La Rambla 9a+ (5.15a) at Siurana Spain
16-year-old French phenom Enzo Oddo has climbed yet another 5.15 with his repeat of La Rambla original in Siurana, Spain. The route was first climbed before Oddo was even born by Alex Huber to a stopping point 3/4 up the wall, and it was subsequently extended by Ramón Julián Puigblanque. The accepted grade for this route these days seems to be 5.15a, but Rock and Ice has a good recap of this history of the route including Huber's thoughts on how the grade of this route and many others has been inflated over the years: "It's a fact that La Rambla increased in grade from 8c+ (5.14c) to 9a+ (5.15a). Often people believe this is due to the route extension, but in reality the difficulties do not change substantially with this extension." ~ClimbingNarc.com

Breaking into a new sport climbing grade can be an incredibly difficult challenge, but consolidating that breakthrough can be even harder. Having climbed his first 9a+/5.15a 'Realization/Biographie' in 2014, EpicTV Shop climber Jonathan Siegrist set his sights on another classic of the grade; Spain's 'La Rambla.' To prepare for the route, Jonathan spent the winter in Colorado, training specifically for this project and when he finally got to Spain this Spring, he was no less regimented in his approach, taking the project step by step. La Rambla (Catalan pronunciation:"Las Ramblas") is a street in central Barcelona, popular with both tourists and locals alike. A tree-lined pedestrian mall, it stretches for 1.2 kilometers between Barri Gòtic and El Raval, connecting Plaça de Catalunya in the centre with the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell.
La Rambla can be considered a series of shorter streets, each differently named, hence the plural form Les Rambles (the original Catalan form; in Spanish it is Las Ramblas). From the Plaça de Catalunya toward the harbour, the street is successively called the Rambla de Canaletes, the Rambla dels Estudis, the Rambla de Sant Josep, the Rambla dels Caputxins, and the Rambla de Santa Mònica. Construction of the Maremàgnum in the early 1990s resulted in a continuation of La Rambla on a wooden walkway into the harbour called the Rambla de Mar.
Nearby is the Maritime Museum (Museu Marítim), specifically devoted to naval history in the Mediterranean, which displays a full-scale replica of an ancient galley battle. The museum is housed in the Royal Dockyards (in Catalan, Drassanes) of the medieval era where the ships that connected the extensive dominions of the Crown of Aragon with other ports of the Mediterranean were built. The old port offers other attractions such as leisure venues, restaurants, an IMAX theater, and an aquarium.
In the historical center, close to La Rambla, may be found La Catedral de Barcelona (the Cathedral of Santa Eulàlia), the recently restored (1968--72) Gothic cathedral and seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona, the Plaza Sant Jaume that houses the buildings of the Generalitat of Catalonia and Barcelona's City Council, as well as the narrow streets of the Gothic quarter, the Raval and the Born area.
The promenade is crowded during the day and until late in the night. It is full of kiosks that sell newspapers and souvenirs, flowers and birds, street performers, cafes, restaurants and shops. Near the port are found smaller local markets and the shop-fronts of painters and draftsmen. Strolling along La Rambla one can see such historic buildings as the Palace of the Virreina and La Boqueria market and the famous Liceu Theatre (Liceo in Spanish), in which operas and ballets are staged. One of the side streets, only a few metres long, leads to the Royal Square (Plaça Reial), a plaza with palm trees and porticoed buildings containing many pubs and restaurants, and in which stamp and coin collectors gather on the weekends.
La Rambla can be crowded, especially during the height of the tourist season. Most of the time there are many more tourists than locals occupying the Rambla, which fact has changed the shopping selection, as well as the character of the street in general.[1] For this reason also it has become a prime target of pick pockets.[2]
The Spanish poet Federico García Lorca once said that La Rambla was "the only street in the world which I wish would never end." The name rambla refers to an intermittent watercourse in both Catalan and Spanish. This is reflected in the undulating design on the pavement which is also decorated with a mosaic by Joan Miró. The route was first climbed before Oddo was even born by Alex Huber to a stopping point 3/4 up the wall, and it was subsequently extended by Ramón Julián Puigblanque. The accepted grade for this route these days seems to be 5.15a, but Rock and Ice has a good recap of this history of the route including Huber's thoughts on how the grade of this route and many others has been inflated over the years:
"It's a fact that La Rambla increased in grade from 8c+ (5.14c) to 9a+ (5.15a). Often people believe this is due to the route extension, but in reality the difficulties do not change substantially with this extension."

La Rambla (Catalan pronunciation:"Las Ramblas") is a street in central Barcelona, popular with both tourists and locals alike. A tree-lined pedestrian mall, it stretches for 1.2 kilometers between Barri Gòtic and El Raval, connecting Plaça de Catalunya in the centre with the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell.
La Rambla can be considered a series of shorter streets, each differently named, hence the plural form Les Rambles (the original Catalan form; in Spanish it is Las Ramblas). From the Plaça de Catalunya toward the harbour, the street is successively called the Rambla de Canaletes, the Rambla dels Estudis, the Rambla de Sant Josep, the Rambla dels Caputxins, and the Rambla de Santa Mònica. Construction of the Maremàgnum in the early 1990s resulted in a continuation of La Rambla on a wooden walkway into the harbour called the Rambla de Mar.
Nearby is the Maritime Museum (Museu Marítim), specifically devoted to naval history in the Mediterranean, which displays a full-scale replica of an ancient galley battle. The museum is housed in the Royal Dockyards (in Catalan, Drassanes) of the medieval era where the ships that connected the extensive dominions of the Crown of Aragon with other ports of the Mediterranean were built. The old port offers other attractions such as leisure venues, restaurants, an IMAX theater, and an aquarium.
In the historical center, close to La Rambla, may be found La Catedral de Barcelona (the Cathedral of Santa Eulàlia), the recently restored (1968--72) Gothic cathedral and seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona, the Plaza Sant Jaume that houses the buildings of the Generalitat of Catalonia and Barcelona's City Council, as well as the narrow streets of the Gothic quarter, the Raval and the Born area.
The promenade is crowded during the day and until late in the night. It is full of kiosks that sell newspapers and souvenirs, flowers and birds, street performers, cafes, restaurants and shops. Near the port are found smaller local markets and the shop-fronts of painters and draftsmen. Strolling along La Rambla one can see such historic buildings as the Palace of the Virreina and La Boqueria market and the famous Liceu Theatre (Liceo in Spanish), in which operas and ballets are staged. One of the side streets, only a few metres long, leads to the Royal Square (Plaça Reial), a plaza with palm trees and porticoed buildings containing many pubs and restaurants, and in which stamp and coin collectors gather on the weekends.
La Rambla can be crowded, especially during the height of the tourist season. Most of the time there are many more tourists than locals occupying the Rambla, which fact has changed the shopping selection, as well as the character of the street in general.[1] For this reason also it has become a prime target of pick pockets.[2]

The route was first climbed before Oddo was even born by Alex Huber to a stopping point 3/4 up the wall, and it was subsequently extended by Ramón Julián Puigblanque. The accepted grade for this route these days seems to be 5.15a, but Rock and Ice has a good recap of this history of the route including Huber's thoughts on how the grade of this route and many others has been inflated over the years:
"It's a fact that La Rambla increased in grade from 8c+ (5.14c) to 9a+ (5.15a). Often people believe this is due to the route extension, but in reality the difficulties do not change substantially with this extension."

Quien así habla es el Cabo Vadillo de la Guardia Urbana de Barcelona, mientras patrulla de noche y de paisano por las calles del centro de la ciudad. Tiene 36 años y lleva once años en este Cuerpo, que es como la Policía Municipal de cualquier otro municipio de nuestro país. Vadillo siempre ha prestado sus servicios en el turno de noche.
Sobre las diez de la noche, comienza la jornada y la patrulla de paisano de la Guardia Urbana baja hasta la boca de Metro. Aquí sorprenden a un grupo de jóvenes carteristas. Se sitúan junto a los tornos de entrada y se pegan literalmente a sus víctimas. Ante cualquier movimiento brusco aprovechan para robar las carteras o bolsos sin que nadie se percate de lo ocurrido. Los jóvenes son detenidos y llevados a Comisaría. Pero a los pocos minutos regresan al suburbano y delante de nuestra cámara vuelven a robar con el mismo “modus operandi”.
El Cabo Vadillo viste de paisano: vaqueros, zapatillas, una camiseta y su inconfundible gorra. A veces, incluso, su disfraz va un poco más allá “aquí te conocen hasta andando de espaldas”. Vadillo se ha puesto una venda en el brazo y unas llamativas gafas para pasar más inadvertido. “Estoy seguro de que así me reconocen antes los delincuentes que mi propia madre”.
Su objetivo ahora es camuflarse entre los viandantes para llegar hasta un grupo de “trileros”. Desde las cámaras de seguridad en Comisaria los agentes nos detallan cómo actúan estos estafadores. “Están perfectamente organizados. Alrededor una serie de aguadores, avisan si detectan a la Policía. Y junto al juego los cómplices hacen su papel de gancho para que las víctimas caigan en la trampa”.
La noche continúa para los agentes de la Guardia Urbana. Vadillo interviene en un conflicto entre un vecino y el dueño y los clientes de un bar por un asunto de ruidos. Tras un momento de tensión el Cabo actúa, con gran diplomacia, como árbitro para solucionar el conflicto. También se interviene contra la venta ambulante en La Rambla. La irrupción de los agentes provoca la estampida de los vendedores que huyen por los pasillos del Metro. “Solo un detenido por venta de artículos falsificados, al que se le aplicará una falta administrativa”, nos confirman los agentes.
Vadillo y sus compañeros apoyan también a los agentes que realizan un control de alcoholemia. “Nos situamos a unos metros de distancia para poder observar si algún coche intenta evitar el control”. A los pocos minutos localizan un vehículo sospechoso que circula marcha atrás. Conduce una mujer que se resiste a realizar la prueba del alcoholímetro. Tras ser advertida reiteradamente por los agentes de su actitud negativa de colaboración el resultado es sorprendente: “triplica la tasa permitida y es detenida”, confirma el agente.
A lo largo de la noche Vadillo nos presenta al mejor experto carterista en la técnica conocida como “el Ronaldiño”. El delincuente nos explica, mientras se come una hamburguesa, y con todo lujo de detalles en qué consiste este regate de piernas hasta conseguir la cartera, el móvil o la cadena de oro que la víctima lleve al cuello. Pero Vadillo le pregunta cuántas carteras roba por noche y cuántas veces es detenido por la Guardia Urbana. “Dos o tres veces de 15 no está nada mal. El porcentaje es bueno. Creía que éramos peores”.
“Soy el Jefe de La Rambla”. Así se nos presenta un joven de nacionalidad rumana que ha sido detenido por robar la cartera de una joven mientras paseaba por La Rambla. “No me he enterado de nada”, nos dice la joven sorprendida por la rápida intervención de los agentes. En Comisaria “El Jefe de La Rambla” confiesa que ya es amigo de todos los compañeros de Vadillo “todos me han detenido en alguna ocasión”.
La noche está a punto de finalizar, pero aún hay tiempo para que una intervención policial nos sorprenda. En una reyerta entre inmigrantes el Cabo intenta retener a un hombre de color, de gran estatura, que de forma inesperada le lanza varios puñetazos a la cara de Vadillo que no consigue evitar. “Menudo susto, me ha alcanzado la cara”.
“Finalizamos el servicio. Que tengan un buen descanso todos”. Así se despide el Cabo Vadillo de sus compañeros al terminar su turno de noche todos los días.

Su objetivo ahora es camuflarse entre los viandantes para llegar hasta un grupo de “trileros”. Desde las cámaras de seguridad en Comisaria los agentes nos detallan cómo actúan estos estafadores. “Están perfectamente organizados. Alrededor una serie de aguadores, avisan si detectan a la Policía. Y junto al juego los cómplices hacen su papel de gancho para que las víctimas caigan en la trampa”.
La noche continúa para los agentes de la Guardia Urbana. Vadillo interviene en un conflicto entre un vecino y el dueño y los clientes de un bar por un asunto de ruidos. Tras un momento de tensión el Cabo actúa, con gran diplomacia, como árbitro para solucionar el conflicto. También se interviene contra la venta ambulante en La Rambla. La irrupción de los agentes provoca la estampida de los vendedores que huyen por los pasillos del Metro. “Solo un detenido por venta de artículos falsificados, al que se le aplicará una falta administrativa”, nos confirman los agentes.
Vadillo y sus compañeros apoyan también a los agentes que realizan un control de alcoholemia. “Nos situamos a unos metros de distancia para poder observar si algún coche intenta evitar el control”. A los pocos minutos localizan un vehículo sospechoso que circula marcha atrás. Conduce una mujer que se resiste a realizar la prueba del alcoholímetro. Tras ser advertida reiteradamente por los agentes de su actitud negativa de colaboración el resultado es sorprendente: “triplica la tasa permitida y es detenida”, confirma el agente.
A lo largo de la noche Vadillo nos presenta al mejor experto carterista en la técnica conocida como “el Ronaldiño”. El delincuente nos explica, mientras se come una hamburguesa, y con todo lujo de detalles en qué consiste este regate de piernas hasta conseguir la cartera, el móvil o la cadena de oro que la víctima lleve al cuello. Pero Vadillo le pregunta cuántas carteras roba por noche y cuántas veces es detenido por la Guardia Urbana. “Dos o tres veces de 15 no está nada mal. El porcentaje es bueno. Creía que éramos peores”.
“Soy el Jefe de La Rambla”. Así se nos presenta un joven de nacionalidad rumana que ha sido detenido por robar la cartera de una joven mientras paseaba por La Rambla. “No me he enterado de nada”, nos dice la joven sorprendida por la rápida intervención de los agentes. En Comisaria “El Jefe de La Rambla” confiesa que ya es amigo de todos los compañeros de Vadillo “todos me han detenido en alguna ocasión”.
La noche está a punto de finalizar, pero aún hay tiempo para que una intervención policial nos sorprenda. En una reyerta entre inmigrantes el Cabo intenta retener a un hombre de color, de gran estatura, que de forma inesperada le lanza varios puñetazos a la cara de Vadillo que no consigue evitar. “Menudo susto, me ha alcanzado la cara”.
“Finalizamos el servicio. Que tengan un buen descanso todos”. Así se despide el Cabo Vadillo de sus compañeros al terminar su turno de noche todos los días.
