Epithet

An epithet (from Greek: ἐπίθετον epitheton, neut. of ἐπίθετος epithetos, "attributed, added") is a byname, or a descriptive term (word or phrase), accompanying or occurring in place of a name and having entered common usage. It can be described as a glorified nickname. It has various shades of meaning when applied to seemingly real or fictitious people, divinities, objects, and binomial nomenclature. It can also be a descriptive title: for example, Alexis I the Quiet or Suleiman the Magnificent.

In contemporary use, epithet often refers to an abusive, defamatory, or derogatory phrase, such as a racial epithet. This use as a euphemism is criticized by Martin Manser and other prescriptive linguists.

Linguistics

In linguistics, an epithet can only be a metaphor, essentially a reduced or condensed use of apposition. Epithets are sometimes attached to a person's name or appear in place of his or her name, as what might be described as a glorified nickname or sobriquet. An epithet is linked to its noun by long-established usage. Not every adjective is an epithet. An epithet is especially recognizable when its function is largely decorative, such as if "cloud-gathering Zeus" is employed other than in reference to conjuring up a storm. "The epithets are decorative insofar as they are neither essential to the immediate context nor modelled especially for it. Among other things, they are extremely helpful to fill out a half-verse", Walter Burkert has noted.

Dmitry Malikov

Dmitry Yurievich Malikov (Russian: Дмитрий Юрьевич Маликов) (born 29 January 1970) is a Russian composer, singer, and a recent record producer. He was also an actor in one movie.

Early life

Dmitry Malikov, who goes by his nickname Dima (Дима), was born in Moscow, Soviet Union. His mother, Lyudmila Mikhailovna Vyunkova, was a dancer, and his father, Yuriy Fedorovich Malikov (Юрий Федорович Маликов), was part of a band called Samotsvety (Самоцветы). This combination of parental talent had a large influence in his becoming a musician. In the early 70s, Samotsvety became one of the most popular groups in the USSR, selling several million records. His younger sister, Inna Malikova (Инна Маликова), is also a recording artist. He currently lives with his family, his wife Elena, and his daughter Stefanya.

School and Childhood

As his father was often on tour, Malikov was brought up by his grandparents. Malikov's first school was a musical school, which he started at age 5. In 1977 he started grade school, where his teachers, who knew nothing of his parents, considered him an orphan. He got good grades and, although not perfect, was a model student, much to the misfortune of his younger sister, Inna, who was often compared to him in school.

Ye Jacobites by Name

Ye Jacobites by Name (Roud # 5517) is a traditional Scottish folk song which goes back to the Jacobite Risings in Scotland (1688–1746). While the original version simply attacked the Jacobites from a contemporaneous Whig point of view, Robert Burns rewrote it in around 1791 to give a version with a more general, humanist anti-war outlook. This is the version that most people know today.

The song (no. 371) was published in 1793 in volume 4 of James Johnson's Scots Musical Museum and in James Hogg's Jacobite Reliques of 1817 (no. 34). It also appears in a collection of Scottish songs entitled Personal Choice by Ewan MacColl. The tune is taken from "My Love's in Germany" by Hector Macneill.
