Today, I want to show you how to do time-lapses that look like you’re in a miniature or tiny world, aka. the tilt-shift effect.
In reality, this is a simple technique that can be done in any editing program. I'm going to show how to do it in FCPX, but once you see what I do here I think you can follow along in AE, Photoshop, or Premiere.
But before I get to that, I should probably explain why this technique is called the tilt-shift effect. That’s simply because you can simulate this miniature world on larger scales with a tilt-shift lens.
The best tutorial I’ve seen about that is this one from Canon’s Vincent Laforet - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qo3nYcDCuc but essentially you can take a lens like this and use the tilt function to change the plane of focus. However, what kind of blows my mind is that there is no good reason that I can think of as to why you’d shoot your miniature world time-lapses like this. It gives you no ability to change the focus afterwards. I prefer to do it all in post-production and in fact it’s really easy these days.
I think the blur technique is fairly straight forward in the video.
However, to get the effect right, I think it’s good to do a few more things other than just blur it. First, models like the legos we shot are usually painted with vibrant and saturated colors. That means you need to up your saturation, contrast and sharpness
Other than that it's up to your creativity. To wrap up my suggestions, here are three general rules to do after you do the blurring.
1. Get the angle right - pointing down at 30-45 degrees
2. Make keep that contrast and saturation up.
3. Keep the shutter speed fairly fast - 1/60th or faster.

Tilt–shift photography
Tilt–shift photography is the use of camera movements on small- and medium-format cameras, and sometimes specifically refers to the use of tilt for selective focus, often for simulating a miniature scene.
Sometimes the term is used when the large depth of field is simulated with digital post-processing; the name may derive from a perspective control lens (or tilt–shift lens) normally required when the effect is produced optically.
"Tilt–shift" encompasses two different types of movements: rotation of the lens plane relative to the image plane, called tilt, and movement of the lens parallel to the image plane, called shift.
Tilt is used to control the orientation of the plane of focus (PoF), and hence the part of an image that appears sharp; it makes use of the Scheimpflug principle. Shift is used to adjust the position of the subject in the image area without moving the camera back; this is often helpful in avoiding the convergence of parallel lines, as when photographing tall buildings.

Vincent Laforet
Vincent Laforet (born 1975, Switzerland) is a French American director and photographer. Laforet shared the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography with four other photographers (Stephen Crowley, Chang Lee, James Hill, Ruth Fremson) as a member of The New York Times staff's coverage of the post 9/11 events overseas that captured "the pain and the perseverance of people enduring protracted conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan." In 2006, Laforet became the Times' s first national contract photographer. He has been sent on assignment by Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, and Life. He is represented by the Stockland Martel agency.
In 2002, PDN named Vincent Laforêt as one of the “30 photographers under 30 to watch″. In 2005, American Photo Magazine recognized Laforêt as one of the “100 Most Influential People in Photography.” He and four other photographers were awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography for their post-9/11 coverage overseas in 2002. His work has been recognized in the Communication Arts Annual, PDN Annual, The SPD Magazine Cover of the Year (Society of Publication Designers), The World Press Photo Awards, The Pictures of the Year Competition, The Overseas Press Club, The National Headliners Awards, The Pro-Football Hall of Fame. Vincent is a Canon Explorer of Light and Canon Printmaster and serves as consultant to companies such as Apple, Adobe, Carl Zeiss, Leica, Canon, Bogen, Lexar, and X-Rite. He and his work have been profiled on CNN and Good Morning America.

How to Create Tilt-Shift / Miniature World Time-lapses
Today, I want to show you how to do time-lapses that look like you’re in a miniature or tiny world, aka. the tilt-shift effect. In reality, this is a simple technique that can be done in any editing program. I'm going to show how to do it in FCPX, but once you see what I do here I think you can follow along in AE, Photoshop, or Premiere. But before I get to that, I should probably explain why this technique is called the tilt-shift effect. Today, I want to show you how to do time-lapses that look like you’re in a miniature or tiny world, aka. the tilt-shift effect.
In reality, this is a simple technique that can be done in any editing program. I'm going to show how to do it in FCPX, but once you see what I do here I think you can follow along in AE, Photoshop, or Premiere.
But before I get to that, I should probably explain why this technique is called the tilt-shift effect. That’s simply because you can simulate this miniature world on larger scales with a tilt-shift lens.
The best tutorial I’ve seen about that is this one from Canon’s Vincent Laforet - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qo3nYcDCuc but essentially you can take a lens like this and use the tilt function to change the plane of focus. However, what kind of blows my mind is that there is no good reason that I can think of as to why you’d shoot your miniature world time-lapses like this. It gives you no ability to change the focus afterwards. I prefer to do it all in post-production and in fact it’s really easy these days.
I think the blur technique is fairly straight forward in the video.
However, to get the effect right, I think it’s good to do a few more things other than just blur it. First, models like the legos we shot are usually painted with vibrant and saturated colors. That means you need to up your saturation, contrast and sharpness
Other than that it's up to your creativity. To wrap up my suggestions, here are three general rules to do after you do the blurring.
1. Get the angle right - pointing down at 30-45 degrees
2. Make keep that contrast and saturation up.
3. Keep the shutter speed fairly fast - 1/60th or faster.

How to Create Tilt-Shift / Miniature World Time-lapses
Today, I want to show you how to do time-lapses that look like you’re in a miniature or tiny world, aka. the tilt-shift effect. In reality, this is a simple technique that can be done in any editing program. I'm going to show how to do it in FCPX, but once you see what I do here I think you can follow along in AE, Photoshop, or Premiere. Today, I want to show you how to do time-lapses that look like you’re in a miniature or tiny world, aka. the tilt-shift effect.
In reality, this is a simple technique that can be done in any editing program. I'm going to show how to do it in FCPX, but once you see what I do here I think you can follow along in AE, Photoshop, or Premiere.
But before I get to that, I should probably explain why this technique is called the tilt-shift effect. That’s simply because you can simulate this miniature world on larger scales with a tilt-shift lens.
The best tutorial I’ve seen about that is this one from Canon’s Vincent Laforet - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qo3nYcDCuc but essentially you can take a lens like this and use the tilt function to change the plane of focus. However, what kind of blows my mind is that there is no good reason that I can think of as to why you’d shoot your miniature world time-lapses like this. It gives you no ability to change the focus afterwards. I prefer to do it all in post-production and in fact it’s really easy these days.
I think the blur technique is fairly straight forward in the video.
However, to get the effect right, I think it’s good to do a few more things other than just blur it. First, models like the legos we shot are usually painted with vibrant and saturated colors. That means you need to up your saturation, contrast and sharpness
Other than that it's up to your creativity. To wrap up my suggestions, here are three general rules to do after you do the blurring.
1. Get the angle right - pointing down at 30-45 degrees
2. Make keep that contrast and saturation up.
3. Keep the shutter speed fairly fast - 1/60th or faster.
