With four games played, Vasco da Gama were the pacesetters at the top of the Campeonato Brasileiro. They made the journey east looking to make it five wins from five against Luis Felipe Scolari's Palmeiras on Sunday
Despite having one foot in the Copa do Brasil final after a first-leg semi-final victory over Gremio on Thursday, Scolari's side have struggled to repeat their cup form in the league.
They lay second from bottom with just one point from a possible twelve going into this game. But they showed no ill-effects from their midweek outing, and almost took the lead two minutes in.
After a fine run, Luan's cut back evaded everyone, including team mate Joao Vitor.
Vasco da Gama had to wait 37 minutes for their first shot on target but Palmeiras keeper Bruno was equal to Romulo's long-range effort. Palmeiras continued their threat into the second half and it paid off.
Mazinho's trickery proving too much for Vasco defender Dede, allowing the first-half substitute to squeeze his shot in from a tight angle. That was the second time in a week the midfielder had come off the bench to score.
With time running out for a Vasco equaliser, Juninho broke though the Palmeiras defence, but couldn't find the finish to match his run. But the visitors' pressure did eventually pay off and in some style - no problems with Juninho's finishing this time. And with one minute remaining the home side fell victim to another set piece.
Alecsandro's header looked to have clinched all three points for Vasco, but the flag came to Palmeiras' rescue after he was judged to be offside, much to the forward's dismay. That was the way it stayed, signalling the end of Vasco's 100 per cent record as they missed the chance to go five points clear.
A hard-earned point for Scolari's side lifted them to 18th.
