In our first #BeTheNerd series, we speak to Durga R., a Data Engineering Manager at Facebook. Durga graduated from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, with a Masters in Computer Science. She began her career at Facebook where she develops, maintains, tests and evaluates big data solutions.

When I was still in school my parents wanted me to go to university, they wanted me to have a good steady job; my dad was dying for me to work in the bank. However, the thought of that gave me hives. I knew back then that banking did not appeal to me as a dynamic and exciting environment.

I’ve always worked in the ad industry. Prior to Facebook I worked in a sales company for 28 radio stations across Ireland; it was quite challenging to have 28 radio stations as a complex customer set. But that's where I really cut my teeth working with the ad agencies and where I built my negotiation skills. I enjoyed working in such a fast-paced environment.

Facebook has had a huge impact on our lives: The company essentially owns a large part of the world’s social media user base with its products from Facebook itself, to Instagram, to WhatsApp playing an integral part in how we communicate with our family and friends and interact with brands, media, and public figures.

Given how much the company’s products influence our social media, and now, real-world lives, it’s no wonder why Facebook is one of the most coveted places to intern with year after year.

We're a hybrid of Software, Systems, Networking and Design for Scale, where most of our time is spent in writing code. Like any team has software engineers for mobile, software engineers for frontend and software engineers for backend, we are software engineers focused on infrastructure and production.

The Clonee data center will be Facebook's first in Ireland and follows Luleå, in Sweden, as our second in Europe. The facility will be part of the infrastructure that enables billions of people to connect with the people and things they care about on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and more.

Shigeo relocated from Japan to Singapore seven months ago to take up a new role as a Publisher Development Manager at Facebook. We interviewed him to learn about his experience working at Facebook and relocating to a new country.

Facebook recently held its annual Take Your Kids to Work Day at our Menlo Park, California headquarters. We were excited to host parents and their children at this event, specifically designed to share with kids of all ages what it’s like to work at Facebook. The activities showcased Facebook's values and gave kids a more hands-on connection to our mission and culture. Along with the fun train rides and live kid’s music, we incorporated STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) and social good activities for the next generation of builders.

I joined Facebook 6 years ago and worked on an emerging market product throughout those 6 years. I started on Facebook for Every Phone which was a Facebook product for feature phones (non-smart phones) and shifted to the android world with Facebook Lite.
