On the 28th of February 1890 at 9.14 pm a ship struck an uncharted rock in the middle of a channel near Albany Island in the Torres Strait, Far North Queensland . 134 people lost their lives that night.

The RMS Quetta sank in 1890 in The Torres Straits in Far Northern Queensland.
The sight has very large tidal changes, ripping currents and low visibility.
On the day that the guests and crew of Mike Ball Dive Expeditions, Spoilsport dived it, we were blessed by outstanding conditions and an expected 20m's of visibility.
All of this footage was filmed in one dive. Being 116m's long, it was a lot to cover. I wish I had had more time to pay attention to the finer details.
The tragedy that happened when the Quetta sank, those that lost their lives, the stories of the survivors, the preservation of the wreck, the prolific marine life, all make diving RMS Quetta one of the most evocative dives that will remain etched in my memory for a long time to come.
I look forward to 3rd of October 2013 when Spoilsport returns to The Torres Straits to dive this amazing wreck again.

Quetta (Urdu: کوئٹہ, Pashto: کوټه, Balochi: کویته 
pronunciation ) is the provincial capital of Balochistan, Pakistan and 9th largest city of Pakistan. The city is known as the fruit garden of Pakistan, due to the numerous fruit orchards in and around it, and the large variety of fruits and dry fruits produced there. The immediate area has long been one of pastures and mountains, with varied plants and animals relative to the dry plains to the west. Quetta is at an average elevation of 1,680 meters (5,510 feet) above sea level, making it Pakistan's only high-altitude major city. The population of the city is estimated to be approximately two million.
Located in northern Balochistan near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, Quetta is a trade and communication centre between the two countries. The city lies on the Bolan Pass route which was once the only gateway from Central Asia to South Asia. Quetta played an important role militarily for the Pakistani Armed Forces in the intermittent Afghanistan conflict.

RMS Quetta
RMS Quetta was a Royal Mail Ship that was wrecked on the Far North Queensland coast on 28 February 1890. Quetta's sinking killed 134 of the 292 people onboard and so this resulted in one of Queensland's biggest maritime catastrophes.
Background
RMS Quetta was a British-India Steam Navigation Company liner that travelled between England, India and the Far East. The Queensland Government negotiated to have a service between the United Kingdom and Brisbane, to ease the passage of people and mail. Quetta was specifically built for the Australia run, with refrigeration capacity for the frozen meat trade. The ship was launched in March 1881 and made her first voyage to Brisbane in 1883. The designation RMS indicated the ship's role within the Queensland Royal Mail Line. Her sister ships were Manora and Merkara.
The ship was initially designed for 72 saloon (first class) and 32 steerage (second class) passengers, although this was later altered to favour steerage class due to the large number of migrants using the service. In five-and-a-half years service Quetta made 11 London-Brisbane round trips; the twelfth would be her final attempt.

The common element is the quilted finish - no matter the size, shape, theme or item. The medium of expression is fabric and thread, the canvas on which each artist expresses her creative ideas in whichever embroidery style she is most comfortable with. The entire exercise of imagining, creating, expressing, and quilting each piece, is a means to thinking on the feet and outside the box, maximizing personal resources, appreciating strength in numbers, allowing reinterpretations of ancient techniques without loosing sight of tradition, and most significantly shedding the cloak of self doubt and fear. The work is individualistic and collective simultaneously - the end product as good as its weakest hand. -

The RMS Quetta sank in 1890 in The Torres Straits in Far Northern Queensland.
The sight has very large tidal changes, ripping currents and low visibility.
On the day that the guests and crew of Mike Ball Dive Expeditions, Spoilsport dived it, we were blessed by outstanding conditions and an expected 20m's of visibility.
All of this footage was filmed in one dive. Being 116m's long, it was a lot to cover. I wish I had had more time to pay attention to the finer details.
The tragedy that happened when the Quetta sank, those that lost their lives, the stories of the survivors, the preservation of the wreck, the prolific marine life, all make diving RMS Quetta one of the most evocative dives that will remain etched in my memory for a long time to come.
I look forward to 3rd of October 2013 when Spoilsport returns to The Torres Straits to dive this amazing wreck again.

The medium of expression is fabric and thread, the canvas on which each artist expresses her creative ideas in whichever embroidery style she is most comfortable with.
The entire exercise of imagining, creating, expressing, and quilting each piece, is a means to thinking on the feet and outside the box, maximizing personal resources, appreciating strength in numbers, allowing reinterpretations of ancient techniques without loosing sight of tradition, and most significantly shedding the cloak of self doubt and fear.
