Samuel Cook (January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964), known professionally as Sam Cooke, was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur.
Influential as both a singer and composer, he is commonly known as the King of Soul for his distinctive vocals and importance within popular music. His pioneering contributions to soul music contributed to the rise of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Billy Preston, and popularized the likes of Otis Redding and James Brown.AllMusic biographer Bruce Eder wrote that Cooke was "the inventor of soul music", and possessed "an incredible natural singing voice and a smooth, effortless delivery that has never been surpassed".
Cooke had 30 U.S. top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, plus three more posthumously. Major hits like "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Cupid", "Chain Gang", "Wonderful World", and "Twistin' the Night Away" are some of his most popular songs. Cooke was also among the first modern black performers and composers to attend to the business side of his musical career. He founded both a record label and a publishing company as an extension of his careers as a singer and composer. He also took an active part in the civil rights movement.
"A Change Is Gonna Come" is a song by American recording artist Sam Cooke, released on December 22, 1964 by RCA Victor. Produced by Hugo & Luigi and arranged and conducted by René Hall, the song was the B-side to "Shake". The song concerns African-Americans and contains the refrain, "It's been a long time coming, but I know a change is gonna come." The song was inspired by various personal events in Cooke's life, most prominently an event in which he and his entourage were turned away from a whites only motel in Louisiana. Cooke felt compelled to write a song that spoke to his struggle and of those around him, and he recorded the song for its first release on his final album, Ain't That Good News.
Though only a modest hit for Cooke in comparison with his previous singles, "A Change Is Gonna Come" became an anthem for the American Civil Rights Movement. The song is widely considered Cooke's best composition and has been voted among the best songs ever released by various publications. In 2007, the song was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress, with the National Recording Registry deeming the song "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important."

"Nothing Can Change This Love" is a song by American singer-songwriter Sam Cooke, released on September 11, 1962 by RCA Victor. Produced by Hugo & Luigi and arranged and conducted by René Hall, the song was the B-side to "Somebody Have Mercy". The song peaked at number two on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, and also charted at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Cooke had first attempted to record "Nothing Can Change This Love" in an earlier session on February 15, 1962, with a decidedly more doo-wop flair. Recorded the night before he was to return to the road for tours, Cooke was determined to record the song, but was unable to get into the RCA studio until past midnight. The song was recorded in eight takes.
RCA issued the song as a single two and a half weeks later, and its sales rivaled that of Cooke's most recent success, "Bring It on Home to Me".
"Nothing Can Change This Love" was recorded on August 23, 1962 at RCA Studio 1 in Hollywood, California. The session was conducted and arranged by René Hall. The musicians also recorded "I'm Gonna Forget About You" the same day. Credits adapted from the liner notes to the 2003 compilation Portrait of a Legend: 1951–1964.

Plot: In 1964, a brash new pro boxer, fresh from his olympic gold medal victory, explodes on to the scene, Cassius Clay. Bold and outspoken, he cuts an entirely new image for African Americans in sport with his proud public self confidence with his unapologetic belief that he is the greatest boxer of all time. To his credit, he sets out to prove that with his highly agile and forceful style soon making him a formidable boxer who soon claims the heavyweight championship. His personal life is no less noteworthy with his allegiance to the Nation of Islam, his friendship with the controversial Malcolm X and his abandonment of his slave name in favour of Muhammad Ali stirring up controversy. Yet, at the top of his game, both Ali's personal and professional lives face the ultimate test with the military draft rules are changed, making him eligible for military induction during the Vietnam War. Despite the fact that he could easily agree to a sweetheart deal that would have meant an easy tour of duty for himself, Ali refuses to submit on principle to cooperate in an unjust war for a racist nation that treated his people so poorly. The cost of that stand is high as he finds himself unable to legally box in his own country while his case is contested in court. What follows is a battle for a man who would sacrifice so much for what he believes in and a comeback that would cement his legend as one of the great sports figures of all time.

Growing up a social misfit in poverty, Little Richard's passion, talent and flamboyance catapulted him into the limelight of rock music. His career was rocked by his homosexuality, his fundamental beliefs and the pervasive discrimination within the music industry. We go through his chart-topping years when he lived the quintessential Rock and Roll life, indulging in all-night orgies and the spiritual callings that pulled him in and out of the music industry. But as alcohol and drug addition plagued his career in the late 1960s, Little Richard makes the life-saving decision to return to his family. Through their love and strength, and Little Richard's resolve, he moves on in history to become one of the most memorable performers in rock and roll.

Sam Cooke's version of Unchained Melody off his Hits of the 50's album. Released in 1960.
Another fave of mine.
One of the most famous songs of Sam Cooke, the "father of soul". Cupid draw back your bow And let your arrow go Straight to my lover's heart for me Cupid please hear my cry And let your arrow fly Straight to my lover's heart for me Now I don't mean to bother you But I'm in distress There's danger of me losing all of my happiness For I love a girl who doesn't know I exist And this you can fix So... Cupid draw back your bow And let your arrow go Straight to my lover's heart for me Cupid please hear my cry And let your arrow fly Straight to my lover's heart for me Cupid with your arrow make her love strong for me I promise I wll love her until eternity I know between the two of us her heart we can steal help me if you will So... Mary: I gotta change shoes. Mary: Okay, there we go. Now, that’s so much better. Stuart: Ladies and gentlemen, obviously, let’s begin at the beginning. Normally, the protocol is that we give people a round of applause at the end of the event. In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on. [applause] Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick q...

During the late 1960’s Jazz music was undergoing a major metamorphosis. Miles Davis was musically in transition and went from the traditional acoustic quartet to a more funky electronic sound. Out went the stand-up bass and came the electronic bass. Out with the standard piano and came the Fender Rhodes. Many musicians in what would be hailed as Fusion jazz phase, took rock, soul, and other free form elements and centered it with an electronic base. Musicians like Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Les McCann, Herbie Hancock, and Stevie Wonder used the Fender Rhodes as not a replacement to the standard piano, but as a means to create and experimental sound to evolve with the new music that took the world by storm. Pianist and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith is a pioneer in the fusion jazz/funk whe...

Abstract What moves us to action? Through this sound scape project we will explore music’s influence on social movements/events in the U.S. and abroad during times of war and peace (ie. The Civil Rights Movement, Apartheid, Occupy Wall Street and Nigeria, The L.A. Riots, Arab Spring, and anti-war movement of the Vietnam War). Think about what movements in history have caused/pushed all people to act no matter their race, religion, age, and/or class? What did music do for these movements and for the people that sacrificed their lives for change? Descriptive Summary This is an exploration of music’s role in driving social movements. With Occupy Wall Street right next door to the students at The New School I wanted to understand why more people and myself in general had not gotten involve...

Upon applying to an internship position at Hootsuite, I was asked to summarize what makes me unique in less than 150 characters. Of course, with my long and decorated history of writing theme songs for social-tech companies, the natural response was to make the staff aware of how I could bring this creative talent to the Hootsuite team. After passing the first-round phone interview, I decided to make good on my promise and deliver a catchy little ditty. The result is this video. I can't take full credit for the song. The melody belongs to a personal favorite: Sam Cooke's 'Cupid.'

I know why I waited
know why I've been blue
I've been praying for someone, baby
exactly like you
why should we spend money, on a show or two
while no one does those love scenes, baby
exactly like you
you make me feel so grand
I wanna give this world to you
you seem to understand
each foolish little dream I'm dreaming
and the schemes I'm scheming
now I know why mother taught me to be true
she meant me for someone, baby
exactly like you
just like you, baby, oh
just like you
mother meant me for someone exactly like you
I know why I waited
know why I been blue
I've been waiting for someone, baby
exactly like you
why should we spend money on a show or two
while no one does those love scenes, baby
exactly like you
you make me feel so grand
I wanna give this world to you
you seem to understand
each foolish little dream I'm dreaming
and the schemes I'm scheming
now I know why mother taught me to be true
she meant me for someone
exactly like you
just like you, baby, just like you
mother meant me for someone exactly like you
just like you, baby, pretty just like you
mother meant me for someone exactly like you
