Huddie William Ledbetter (January 20, 1888 – December 6, 1949) was an American folk and blues musician notable for his strong vocals, virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar, and the songbook of folk standards he introduced. He is best known as Lead Belly. Though many releases list him as "Leadbelly", he himself wrote it as "Lead Belly", which is also the spelling on his tombstone and the spelling used by the Lead Belly Foundation.
Lead Belly usually played a twelve-string guitar, but he also played the piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, and "windjammer" (diatonic accordion). In some of his recordings he sings while clapping his hands or stomping his foot.
Lead Belly's songs covered a wide range, including gospel music; blues about women, liquor, prison life, and racism; and folk songs about cowboys, prison, work, sailors, cattle herding, and dancing. He also wrote songs about people in the news, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Jean Harlow, the Scottsboro Boys, and Howard Hughes.
I used my forensic software to split the guitar from vocals in this classic recording. I then eq'd it and remixed the stems. Probably one of the oldest songs in stereo. Original, mono version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRtd9TFfScU

A folklorist, John Lomax and his son Alan Lomax, with funding from the Library of Congress recorded Huddie William Ledbetter, commonly known as Lead Belly or Leadbelly. They first meet him while he was imprisoned. They were deeply impressed by his vibrant tenor voice and huge repertoire, they recorded him on portable aluminum disc recording equipment for the Library of Congress. They returned to record with new and better equipment in July of the following year (1934), all in all recording hundreds of his songs. On August 1, Lead Belly was released (again having served almost all of his minimum sentence), this time after the Lomaxes had taken a petition to Louisiana Governor Oscar K. Allen at Ledbetter's urgent request. The petition was on the other side of a recording of his signature s...
This is the song that Mark Lanegan and Nirvana covered. It is not a Nirvana song, or a Mark Lanegan song. It is a traditional song that Leadbelly was the first to record it. Lanegan and Cobain heard it and loved it.

Some time ago I accidentally stumbled upon Robert Johnson and I was amazed. Since that time I started reading, learning for him and the Blues and above all listening to them. So... recently I created a Blog (which due to personal obligations isn't very good yet) and more recently this youtube channel on which I hope that I will post my blues music videos... Not something special but something which I started with lots of love about this music. Hope you 'll like them and enjoy!!! my Blog in English: http://deltacrossroads.blogspot.gr/ and in Greek: https://deltacrossroads.wordpress.com/ "In the Pines", also known as "Black Girl" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", is a traditional American folk song which dates back to at least the 1870s, and is believed to be Southern Appalachian in o...

The common belief is that Huddie Leadbetter (Leadbelly) was only ever caught on film once, but the fellow who sings two versus in this song sounds an awful lot like him in my opinion. Moreover he looks enough like him to raise questions in my mind as to whether this is unrealised footage of the great man. I'd be interested to hear what others think.

The vocals takes you back to the best days of the big beat guru and keep it ultra cool with the filtered deephouse stabs and tight production. We bet this track will create some serious cheers in the clubs. Here's two versions of the song: Yonder come Miss Rosie, how in the world do you know Well I know by the apron and the dress she wore Well an umbrella on her shoulder, piece of paper in her hand Well I'm gonna ask the governor, he turn a-lose a-my man Let the midnight special, shine the light on me Let the midnight special, shine the ever-lovin' light on me When you get up in the mornin', when that big bell ring You go and march to the table, see the same damn thing Knife and fork are on the table, there's nothin' in my pan And if you say anything about it, havin' trouble with the man Well I went to the nation and to the territo(ry) Well I thought about the girl I love, in that Mexico If you ever go to Houston, oh you better walk right And you better not squallow and you better not fi...
