Riley B. "B.B." King (September 16, 1925 – May 14, 2015) was an American blues singer, guitarist, songwriter, and record producer. King introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that influenced many later electric blues guitarists.
King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname "The King of the Blues", and one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" along with Albert King and Freddie King. King was known for performing tirelessly throughout his musical career, appearing at more than 200 concerts per year on average into his 70s. In 1956, he reportedly appeared at 342 shows.
King died at the age of 89 in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 14, 2015 from complications of Alzheimer's disease along with congestive heart failure and diabetic complications.
Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation called Berclair, near the town of Itta Bena, Mississippi, the son of sharecroppers Albert and Nora Ella King. He considered the nearby city of Indianola, Mississippi to be his home. When Riley was 4 years old, his mother left his father for another man, so the boy was raised by his maternal grandmother, Elnora Farr, in Kilmichael, Mississippi.

The amazing B.B. King—along with some overambitious sock puppets—stars in this musical short film directed and designed by Sandra Boynton, and edited and mixed by Boynton with Michael Ford. The track was originally written and produced by Boynton and Ford for the celebrated album/songbook BLUE MOO: 17 Jukebox Hits from Way Back Never. This short film was shot on 35mm film at Dreamvision Studios in Las Vegas on July 18, 2008. It was released as a book/DVD by Workman Publishing in September of 2009. "This is my first film-directing experience, and I also got to take on the glorious complications of production design. Working with B.B. King is just fabulous. What a miracle he is."

The B.B. King Children's Choir re-recorded "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" from the 1960 album "B.B. Sings Spirituals." This piece–which features King's voice along with the choir–was emotionally stirring when it was released, but is even more so now in light of his passing. Listen to this beautifully done piece compiled by Delta Music Institute as you see a montage of photos from his life. Visit www.bbkingmuseum.org/in-memoriam1 for an In Memoriam of the legendary B.B. B.B. King spoke of his great love of music making and provided sound advice for those who want to play an instrument. He smiled as he recalled buying his first guitar amplifier and spoke with a warm voice when reflecting on his greatest musical influences. BB's NAMM Oral History interview was a time for him to reflect on his early instruments and the music stores he visited during his life and career as one of the greatest blues guitarists of all time.
At 87, blues musician B.B. King is still a touring machine. If you ask one of his friends about where he lives these days, you'll get, "Well technically Las Vegas, but really he lives out on the road," as Robert Terrell explains. He's the director of entertainment at the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Indianola, Miss., not far from where the blues musician was born on a Delta cotton plantation.

"I don't like to feel that I owe anything. I like to feel that I pay my own way, no free lunch." - B.B. King on September 5, 1986, as told to Joe Smith Mr. B.B. King. The blues legend says he played 300 nights a year for four-plus decades. That's just ridiculous. We're talking about nearly 15,000 shows. King turns 90 this year and you still just might be able to see him on stage. So what's his secret? We heard some keys to living life to its fullest in a 1986 interview that had been unheard until now. In this animated film created from B.B. King's interview with legendary music executive, Joe Smith, the musician explains how he approaches an audience, how a fire at a juke joint led to his naming his guitar "Lucille", why the blues isn't just being down on your luck, and why compliments ...

Mary: I gotta change shoes. Mary: Okay, there we go. Now, that’s so much better. Stuart: Ladies and gentlemen, obviously, let’s begin at the beginning. Normally, the protocol is that we give people a round of applause at the end of the event. In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on. [applause] Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick q...

Watch Nobel Prize winning playwright Dario Fo tell his version of the story of King Christian VII of Denmark and his wife Caroline Mathilde – a dramatic story of love, infidelity and madness in the 18th century, which Fo explores in his new novel. “When I start to research a character, I want to tell his story.” It was hard for Fo to tell the whole story, when it came to that of King Christian VII and his wife Caroline Mathilde, as many facts had been censored or removed from the historical writings. This, however, only triggered his interest further: “It makes me want to know the truth, what are you hiding and why?” On his quest to uncover the truth, Fo then found new texts abroad (in England and France), which made the novel ‘There’s a Mad King in Denmark’ (2015) come together. Fo comp...

Music & Arts sits down in Brooklyn, NY to interview Sony artist, A Great Big World, an American musical duo made up of singers and songwriters Ian Axel and Chad King. During our discussion, we talked about the duo's early connection to music education, growing up surrounded by instruments, and music's influence on them today. Digging deeper, we hear their thoughts on the importance of music lessons as well as collaboration. These guys are tightly tied to both their roots and to their friendship. In their own words, their partnership was "inevitable." Finally, the guys share a little insight on how music became their outlet and way through the world. Check out A Great Big World's album, "When The Morning Comes," from Epic Records.
Delving into our archives we’re happy to release for the very first time this full interview with world famous blues musician Eric Bibb. In the blues, a guitar can be as famous as the man who played it. B.B. King has Lucille, the curvy hollow-bodied Gibson electric he caresses in concert. Clapton calls his Stratocaster, Blackie. Then there’s the legendary National steel guitar of early Delta bluesman Booker White, a peer of blues pioneer Robert Johnson. In this previously unreleased film, Eric discusses and plays the instrument described by B.B King as a “holy relic” and known simply as Hard Rock. The guitar found its way into Eric’s arms, in a story that is as legendary as Robert Johnson at the crossroads, as old as the blues itself. A traveling musician has a chance encounter in th...
