LOVE: AS YOU LIKE IT is a true independent film, a special “no-budget” ($16,000), donation-funded passion project featuring spirited performances from a young and talented cast, and a unique overall vision incorporating both super 8mm film and digital video.
Directed by University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts graduate Marika Sonja Cotter, LOVE: AS YOU LIKE IT takes viewers on a wild ride through San Francisco’s hip, artistic and culturally diverse Mission District as a dynamic group of characters struggle with what it means to love, and to be loved.
Adapted for the screen by Cotter from William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy AS YOU LIKE IT, the film, which uses the original language of the play, follows free-spirited Rosalind, who falls for the wrong boy, and her sassy cousin Celia as they throw off the shackles of childhood, disguise themselves as hipsters and run away to the city of San Francisco to experience love and life at its fullest.
Cotter, who has studied Shakespeare with Royal Shakespeare Company’s Dr. Rob Clare, aims to provide a wild and Everyman interpretation of Shakespeare’s text, ripping it from its pedestal and putting it in the mouths of everyday people, especially those from younger generations.
Her goal with this adaptation is to focus primarily on exploring character through free-spirited performance rather than indulging in Shakespeare’s language; the result is raucous, risky, provocative and smart. This is not Shakespeare at its finest; this is Shakespeare the way its meant to be – bold, brave and brassy.
Without generous contributions from the San Francisco Bay Area filmmaking community, LAYLI would have remained a dream; the production and completion of the film was aided significantly by artists, small business owners, and donors from the Bay Area and around the world.
Multiple locations for the film include local small businesses such as Mission District antique store Gypsy Honeymoon, Bernal Heights video store Four Star Video, Santa Rosa Mark West Horse Stables, and Martinez’s music venue Armando’s.
The Shakespeare-trained cast includes many who are either currently based in or originally from the San Francisco Bay Area including Matt Jones, Hugo Pierre Martin, Lenne Klingaman, Annalisa Bastiani, Veronica Mannion, Alan Kaiser, Michael Navarra, and Skip Emerson. The director herself grew up in Northern California (Richmond, Berkeley, Point Richmond and San Anselmo), was an intern at Marin Shakespeare Company, and got her filmmaking start at College of Marin.
Music featured in the film includes contributions from the director’s own brother Colin Cotter, an independent singer-songwriter based in the Bay Area, and Olivia Voss and Bryan Brunt who make up Sucker for Lights, a band originally from the Bay Area that is now located in Portland, Oregon.
Many of the fantastic crew members, without whom the film, quite simply, could not have been made, hail from San Francisco State University’s film program, and generously donated their time, as well as their own resources, in order to see this film complete. In fact, producers Phill Matarrese and Joseph Matarrese are both alumni of San Francisco State University’s film program, as are several of the actors, including Hugo Pierre Martin, who is also a producer.
Filmmaking is a special communal process, and can rarely be successful without contributions, cooperation and input from many people; LOVE: AS YOU LIKE IT is a testament to this fact, and celebrates the spirit and passion of the independent film community.

This is a modern-day adaptation of the popular "I would not be thy executioner" scene from William Shakespeare's romantic comedy "As You Like It" in which Phebe launches into a monologue after Silvius confronts her about leading him on.
This scene was shot in Los Angeles as a teaser scene for a crowdfunding campaign for the feature-length version. The feature was made, and you can watch it on YouTube for free. It's called LOVE: AS YOU LIKE IT and it's set in modern-day San Francisco.

San Francisco
San Francisco (/sæn frənˈsɪskoʊ/), officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California and the only consolidated city-county in California. As You Like It
As You Like It is a pastoral comedy by William Shakespeare believed to have been written in 1599 and first published in the First Folio, 1623. The play's first performance is uncertain, though a performance at Wilton House in 1603 has been suggested as a possibility. As You Like It follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle's court, accompanied by her cousin Celia to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden. In the forest, they encounter a variety of memorable characters, notably the melancholy traveller Jaques who speaks many of Shakespeare's most famous speeches (such as "All the world's a stage" and "A fool! A fool! I met a fool in the forest"). Jaques provides a sharp contrast to the other characters in the play, always observing and disputing the hardships of life in the country. Historically, critical response has varied, with some critics finding the work of lesser quality than other Shakespearean works and some finding the play a work of great merit.

Ethan Lewis
Ethan Lewis (born 28 March 1994) is a Welsh rugby union player who plays for Cardiff Blues regional team as a hooker. He was a Wales under-18 and under-20 international.
Lewis made his debut for the Cardiff Blues regional team in 2014 having previously played for the Blues academy and Cardiff RFC.

LOVE: AS YOU LIKE IT is a true independent film, a special “no-budget” ($16,000), donation-funded passion project featuring spirited performances from a young and talented cast, and a unique overall vision incorporating both super 8mm film and digital video.
Directed by University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts graduate Marika Sonja Cotter, LOVE: AS YOU LIKE IT takes viewers on a wild ride through San Francisco’s hip, artistic and culturally diverse Mission District as a dynamic group of characters struggle with what it means to love, and to be loved.
Adapted for the screen by Cotter from William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy AS YOU LIKE IT, the film, which uses the original language of the play, follows free-spirited Rosalind, who falls for the wrong boy, and her sassy cousin Celia as they throw off the shackles of childhood, disguise themselves as hipsters and run away to the city of San Francisco to experience love and life at its fullest.
Cotter, who has studied Shakespeare with Royal Shakespeare Company’s Dr. Rob Clare, aims to provide a wild and Everyman interpretation of Shakespeare’s text, ripping it from its pedestal and putting it in the mouths of everyday people, especially those from younger generations.
Her goal with this adaptation is to focus primarily on exploring character through free-spirited performance rather than indulging in Shakespeare’s language; the result is raucous, risky, provocative and smart. This is not Shakespeare at its finest; this is Shakespeare the way its meant to be – bold, brave and brassy.
Without generous contributions from the San Francisco Bay Area filmmaking community, LAYLI would have remained a dream; the production and completion of the film was aided significantly by artists, small business owners, and donors from the Bay Area and around the world.
Multiple locations for the film include local small businesses such as Mission District antique store Gypsy Honeymoon, Bernal Heights video store Four Star Video, Santa Rosa Mark West Horse Stables, and Martinez’s music venue Armando’s.
The Shakespeare-trained cast includes many who are either currently based in or originally from the San Francisco Bay Area including Matt Jones, Hugo Pierre Martin, Lenne Klingaman, Annalisa Bastiani, Veronica Mannion, Alan Kaiser, Michael Navarra, and Skip Emerson. The director herself grew up in Northern California (Richmond, Berkeley, Point Richmond and San Anselmo), was an intern at Marin Shakespeare Company, and got her filmmaking start at College of Marin.
Music featured in the film includes contributions from the director’s own brother Colin Cotter, an independent singer-songwriter based in the Bay Area, and Olivia Voss and Bryan Brunt who make up Sucker for Lights, a band originally from the Bay Area that is now located in Portland, Oregon.
Many of the fantastic crew members, without whom the film, quite simply, could not have been made, hail from San Francisco State University’s film program, and generously donated their time, as well as their own resources, in order to see this film complete. In fact, producers Phill Matarrese and Joseph Matarrese are both alumni of San Francisco State University’s film program, as are several of the actors, including Hugo Pierre Martin, who is also a producer.
