My Sydney, with Vivid's Kiwi Director Ash Bolland

Sydneyska opera

Audio Creatures is a 15-minute display of light which has illuminated the Sydney Opera House every night throughout the Vivid Sydney festival.

As Vivid Sydney wraps up for another year, we chat to Kiwi director Ash Bolland who designed the festival's most prominent show, Audio Creatures.

Tell us Ash, how are you spending the final night of Vivid?

I haven't been down since opening night so I'll take my kids down to the harbour and take some photos and my producer Tara Riddell and I might have a drink and celebrate. This thing was built for the Opera House so it will never appear anywhere else.

Did you go see any of the musical acts that were part of Vivid Sydney?

I did! I went to a few things. Repressed Records from Sydney did a show with a big lineup of bands like Total Control (from Melbourne), they're this really great electronic punk band. They played on the steps of the Opera House, which was a cool place to see great mixture of fun underground punk, pop and electronic music. Really great!

Is there any inspiration in Audio Creatures that we can claim as Kiwi? (You know what we're like over here...)

Yeah for sure. Just growing up being DIY. I'm totally self taught and everything I've done has been learnt on the fly which is a great Kiwi trait. I taught myself to draw, to use a computer, to direct live action, all of that.

A Facebook live stream of the show attracted record numbers.

What neighbourhood do you live in, and what do you love about it?

I live in Chippendale, right in the heart of Sydney. What I love about it is that in 10-15 minutes I can be on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and then I can be in a big international city.

Do you miss anything about New Zealand?

I miss it a lot. I miss the culture and the tone of the place. Family and friends.

What are the cultural differences between Australia and New Zealand?

New Zealand is a lot more isolated. Australia has more diversity but a lot less of its own identity. New Zealand is more close-knit and backyard.

What's something Kiwis visiting Sydney should know about?

Check out the inner-city, around Redfern and Chippendale there are a lot of unique pop-up bars and nooks and crannies. Go see White Rabbit Gallery in Chippendale, it's beautiful, lots of young artists and its a big space. You can spend a good couple of hours there.

Vivid Sydney 2017 concludes tonight.
