Ian David McShane (born 29 September 1942) is a British actor, voice actor, director, and producer. Despite appearing in numerous films, he is best known for his television roles, particularly BBC's Lovejoy (1986–1994),HBO's drama series Deadwood (2004–2006) and Game of Thrones (2016). He also starred as King Silas Benjamin in the NBC series Kings, Bishop Waleran in The Pillars of the Earth, Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda, and as Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
McShane was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, on 29 September 1942, the son of Irene (née Cowley) (b. 1921) and footballer Harry McShane (1920–2012). His father was Scottish and his mother, who was born in England, was of Irish and English descent. McShane grew up in Davyhulme, Lancashire, and attended Stretford Grammar School. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and was still a student there when he appeared in his first film, 1962's The Wild and the Willing. McShane was a member of National Youth Theatre.
Ellis Albert "Al" Swearengen (8 July 1845 – 15 November 1904) was an American pimp and early entertainment entrepreneur in Deadwood, South Dakota, who ran the Gem Theater, a notorious brothel, for 22 years. He reputedly combined a reputation for brutality with an uncanny instinct for forging political alliances.
Swearengen and his twin brother, Lemuel, were two of eight children of Daniel Swearengen and Keziah (often called Katie) Swearengen of Oskaloosa. Many of Deadwood's residents had left home at a young age to make their fortunes on the wild frontier, whereas Swearengen remained at home well into his adult years, arriving in Deadwood in May, 1876 with his wife, Nettie Swearengen. Nettie would later divorce him on the grounds of spousal abuse. Swearengen married two more times, with both subsequent marriages also ending in divorce.
Swearengen lured desperate young women from far away to Deadwood, then forced them into prostitution through a combination of bullying and physical brutality, committed by himself and his henchmen. The results were highly lucrative: the Gem earned an average of $5,000 a night, sometimes as much as $10,000 (worth between $140,000 and $280,000 when inflation-adjusted for 2009). The Gem burned down on September 26, 1879, along with much of the town, but Swearengen rebuilt it larger and more opulent than ever, to great public acclaim.

Deadwood the best of Al Swearengen talking the talk and walking the walk when it comes to murder. Ian McShane killing, killer, death.
This is the video we made about our favorite show: "Deadwood". Though it only lasted three seasons, we think it is one of the best works of television ever made.

As the classic HBO Western celebrates its 10th anniversary, we look back at all the reasons we fell in love with the show in the first place.
You got the world boy
This all you make it?
You had the choice lad
You wouldn't take it
The oldest charm
Only the best for you
And the years of my life,
Some they were so good
But now and again I feel
I was a coward
Are the holes in my soul
In tatters for all these tears
Well you don't see it that way
A way, a way
We'll have it today
The dancing ones they really mean it
But something boy,
Something's gonna change
A way, a way
You've got it they say
How do they know
When they've never seen it?
And what will you do
When they forget your name?
Well you'll up and get another one
Don't give me that face
I know when I should live in disgrace
Not dig up the deadwood
I knew this place was never the place for me
And of the years that rolled by
Yeah some were so good
But now I know that
You were the coward
The holes in your soul
In tatters for all these years
But you can't see it that way
A way, a way
We'll have it today
The dancing ones they really mean it
And mark my words
Something's gonna change
A way, a way
You've got it they say
But how do they know
When they've never seen it?
And what will you do
When they forget your name?
Well you'll up and get another one
A way, a way
We'll have it today
The dancing ones they really mean it
But something boy
somethings gonna change
A way, a way
You've got it today
But how do they know
When theyve never seen it?
And what will you do
When they forget your name?
