Situated in a mountain valley at an altitude of 2,200 m, Sana’a has been inhabited for more than 2,500 years. In the 7th and 8th centuries the city became a major centre for the propagation of Islam. This religious and political heritage can be seen in the 103 mosques, 14 hammams and over 6,000 houses, all built before the 11th century. Sana’a’s many-storeyed tower-houses built of rammed earth (pisé) add to the beauty of the site.

Sanaa sometimes spelled Sanaa or Sana'a) is the capital of Yemen and the centre of San'a' Governorate. San'a' is located at 15.354722° N 44.20667° E and has a population of 1,747,627 (2004 census).
San'a' lies in the heart of Yemeni highlands on a plateau at an altitude of 2200m surrounded by several mountains, notably Jabal Nuqum and Aiban. The city is around 320 km north of Aden.
San'a' is one of the ancient Yemeni cities dating back to the Sabaean dynasty of the 6th Century BC. The oldest written reference to its existence is found in inscriptions which date back to the 1st Century AD. It is suggested that San'a' was the capital of the Himyarite kingdom at the onset of the 6th Century AD.
When King Yousef Athar (or Dhu Nuwas), the last of the Himyarite kings, was in power, San'a' was also the capital of the Ethiopian viceroys, then after 570 of the Persians.
As of the dawn of Islam until the detachment of independent sub-states in many parts of Yemen Islamic Caliphate, San'a' persisted as the governing seat, who himself is Caliph's deputy in running the affairs of one of Yemen's Three Makhalifs: Mikhlaf San'a', Mikhlaf al-Janad and Mikhlaf Hadhramawt. The city of San'a' recurrently assumed an important status and all Yemenite States competed to control it.
The Mamelukes arrived in Yemen in AD 1517. Following the collapse of the Mamelukes in Egypt at the hands of the Ottoman Turks, Yemen fell under the Ottoman Rule and during the first Ottoman rule of Yemen between 1538-1635, San'a' became the capital of the Ottoman Vilayet and also during the Ottoman second rule 1872-1918. In 1918, San'a' was the capital of Imam Yahya, who ruled North Yemen. At the onset of the 1962 revolution which deposed the imamate rule, it became the capital of the Arab Republic of Yemen. It was then the capital of unified Yemen in 1990 where it is dubbed as the historical capital of Yemen.
The old, fortified city has been inhabited for more than 2500 years and contains a wealth of intact architectural gems. It was declared a World Heritage City by the United Nations in 1984. Efforts are underway to preserve some of the oldest buildings, some of which are over 400 years old. Surrounded by ancient clay walls which stand six to nine metres (20-30ft) high, the old city boasts over 100 mosques, 12 hammams (baths) and 6500 houses. Many of the houses look rather like ancient skyscrapers -- reaching several storeys high and topped with flat roofs, they are decorated with elaborate friezes and intricately carved windows.
One of the most popular attractions is Suq al-Milh (Salt Market), where it is possible to buy not only salt but also bread, spices, raisins, cotton, copper, pottery, silverware, antiques, and a host of other goods. The majestic seventh century al-Jami'a l-Kabir (The Great Mosque) is one of the oldest in the Muslim world. Sana'a
Sana'a (also spelled Sanaa or Sana; Arabic: صنعاء Ṣan‘ā’ pronounced [sˤɑnʕaːʔ], Yemeni Arabic: [ˈsˤɑnʕɑ]) is the largest city in Yemen and the centre of Sana'a Governorate. The city is not part of the Governorate, but forms the separate administrative district of "Amanat Al-Asemah". Under the Yemeni constitution, Sana'a is the capital of the country, although the seat of the internationally recognised government moved to Aden in the aftermath of the 2014–15 Yemeni coup d'état. Aden was declared as the temporary capital by President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi in March 2015.
Sana'a is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. At an altitude of 2,300 metres (7,500 ft), it is also one of the highest capital cities in the world. Sana'a has a population of approximately 1,937,500 (2012), making it Yemen's largest city.
The old city of Sana'a, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a distinctive visual character due to its unique architectural characteristics, most notably expressed in its multi-storey buildings decorated with geometric patterns. In the conflict that raged in 2015, bombs hit UNESCO sites. Located here is the Great Mosque of Sana'a, the largest in the city.

Yemen (
i/ˈjɛmən/; Arabic: اليَمَن al-Yaman), officially known as the Republic of Yemen (الجمهورية اليمنية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), is an Arab country in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen is the second largest country in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 km2 (203,850 sq mi). The coastline stretches for about 2,000 km (1,200 mi). It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east. Although Yemen's constitutionally stated capital is the city of Sana'a, the city has been under rebel control since February 2015. Because of this, Yemen's capital has been temporarily relocated to the port city of Aden, on the southern coast. Yemen's territory includes more than 200 islands; the largest of these is Socotra.
Yemen was the home of the Sabaeans (biblical Sheba), a trading state that flourished for over a thousand years and probably also included parts of modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. In 275 AD, the region came under the rule of the later Jewish influenced Himyarite Kingdom. Christianity arrived in the 4th century AD whereas Judaism and local paganism were already established. Islam spread quickly in the 7th century and Yemenite troops were crucial in the expansion of the early Islamic conquests. Administration of Yemen has long been notoriously difficult. Several dynasties emerged from the 9th to 16th century, the Rasulid being the strongest and most prosperous. The country was divided between the Ottoman and British empires in the early 20th century. The Zaydi Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was established after World War I in North Yemen before the creation of Yemen Arab Republic in 1962. South Yemen remained a British protectorate until 1967. The two Yemeni states united to form the modern republic of Yemen in 1990.

Situated in a mountain valley at an altitude of 2,200 m, Sana’a has been inhabited for more than 2,500 years. In the 7th and 8th centuries the city became a major centre for the propagation of Islam. This religious and political heritage can be seen in the 103 mosques, 14 hammams and over 6,000 houses, all built before the 11th century. Sana’a’s many-storeyed tower-houses built of rammed earth (pisé) add to the beauty of the site.

Sanaa sometimes spelled Sanaa or Sana'a) is the capital of Yemen and the centre of San'a' Governorate. San'a' is located at 15.354722° N 44.20667° E and has a population of 1,747,627 (2004 census).
San'a' lies in the heart of Yemeni highlands on a plateau at an altitude of 2200m surrounded by several mountains, notably Jabal Nuqum and Aiban. The city is around 320 km north of Aden.
San'a' is one of the ancient Yemeni cities dating back to the Sabaean dynasty of the 6th Century BC. The oldest written reference to its existence is found in inscriptions which date back to the 1st Century AD. It is suggested that San'a' was the capital of the Himyarite kingdom at the onset of the 6th Century AD.
When King Yousef Athar (or Dhu Nuwas), the last of the Himyarite kings, was in power, San'a' was also the capital of the Ethiopian viceroys, then after 570 of the Persians.
As of the dawn of Islam until the detachment of independent sub-states in many parts of Yemen Islamic Caliphate, San'a' persisted as the governing seat, who himself is Caliph's deputy in running the affairs of one of Yemen's Three Makhalifs: Mikhlaf San'a', Mikhlaf al-Janad and Mikhlaf Hadhramawt. The city of San'a' recurrently assumed an important status and all Yemenite States competed to control it.
The Mamelukes arrived in Yemen in AD 1517. Following the collapse of the Mamelukes in Egypt at the hands of the Ottoman Turks, Yemen fell under the Ottoman Rule and during the first Ottoman rule of Yemen between 1538-1635, San'a' became the capital of the Ottoman Vilayet and also during the Ottoman second rule 1872-1918. In 1918, San'a' was the capital of Imam Yahya, who ruled North Yemen. At the onset of the 1962 revolution which deposed the imamate rule, it became the capital of the Arab Republic of Yemen. It was then the capital of unified Yemen in 1990 where it is dubbed as the historical capital of Yemen.
The old, fortified city has been inhabited for more than 2500 years and contains a wealth of intact architectural gems. It was declared a World Heritage City by the United Nations in 1984. Efforts are underway to preserve some of the oldest buildings, some of which are over 400 years old. Surrounded by ancient clay walls which stand six to nine metres (20-30ft) high, the old city boasts over 100 mosques, 12 hammams (baths) and 6500 houses. Many of the houses look rather like ancient skyscrapers -- reaching several storeys high and topped with flat roofs, they are decorated with elaborate friezes and intricately carved windows.
One of the most popular attractions is Suq al-Milh (Salt Market), where it is possible to buy not only salt but also bread, spices, raisins, cotton, copper, pottery, silverware, antiques, and a host of other goods. The majestic seventh century al-Jami'a l-Kabir (The Great Mosque) is one of the oldest in the Muslim world. The Republic Of Yemen: there is almost no other country on Earth that possesses as many secrets and ancient legends as the Arabia Felix and the Bab Al Yemen, the gateway to the Yemen, is the entrance to the historic district of Sanaa, the Yemen’s capital city that it is believed to date back to the third century A.D. Women are rarely to be seen in Yemen’s marketplaces and, when they are, they are hidden from male glances by a protective veil. Islam still plays an important role in the daily cultural life of the people, including the traditional market places that are almost exclusively a male domain. The Republic Of Yemen covers a large part of the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula and contains several fascinating historical sites. East of Sanaa on the ancient Frankincense route, is the town of Marib that was once the residence of the legendary Queen Of Saba and in the extreme north is the town of Sadah, a region known for its powerful tribes. In the centre of the Djebel Harraz is the picturesque mountain village of Manakhah. Due to its location it was once a strategic point on the ancient trading route between the sea and the highlands. The breathtaking architecture of its buildings still testifies to the former prosperity of a village that today is well known for its popular market. Al Hudaydah was once the most important Turkish harbour on the Red Sea. The city was a commercial rival of the British occupied city of Aden to the south which, during colonial times, was of great importance in securing a sea route to India. In addition to the recent modernisation of the harbour the fishing industry still plays an important role and the fertile coastal waters of the Red Sea still ensure a good catch. To the south of Al Hudaydah is the legendary old harbour of Al Mokha, the former centre of the country’s coffee trade from which the world renowned Mocha coffee derived its name. Despite their present poverty the people here are a proud race and the ancient name of the Yemen, Arabia Felix, or “Arabia The Content”, is still a thing of the present.

UK rapped over Yemen war crime complicity
Liberal Democrats in the UK have denounced London’s complicity in Saudi Arabia’s devastating war on Yemen calling it shameful. A recent report shows that the Saudi Air Force is being trained by the British Government in both Saudi Arabia and the UK itself. Clashes ongoing in Yemen despite truce
Intense fighting has been reported between Yemeni army and Saudi-backed forces despite a three-day UN-backed ceasefire. Saudi war planes pounded east of the capital Sana'a many times. A Saudi official confirmed the attacks claiming that Yemeni forces had violated the truce hundreds of times in 24 hours. However, a UN special envoy says the ceasefire, while fragile, is largely holding. He urged all parties to avoid further escalation. The three-day ceasefire that is due to end late Saturday is aimed at providing an opportunity to deliver humanitarian help to civilians. Liberal Democrats in the UK have denounced London’s complicity in Saudi Arabia’s devastating war on Yemen calling it shameful.
A recent report shows that the Saudi Air Force is being trained by the British Government in both Saudi Arabia and the UK itself. The liberal political party has urged the government to immediately stop the training and restrict arms sales to the oil-rich kingdom. A spokesman for the party has condemned the indiscriminate bombing of innocent civilians by Saudi Arabia in Yemen, as blatant violation of international humanitarian law. Britain’s defense Secretary Michael Fallon has admitted helping the Royal Saudi Air Force but added that it was meant to improve their targeting process. Saudi Arabia came under mounting pressure for its recent airstrikes which killed at least 140 people and injured up to 600 more at a funeral in the Yemeni city of Sana’a.

Intense fighting has been reported between Yemeni army and Saudi-backed forces despite a three-day UN-backed ceasefire.
Saudi war planes pounded east of the capital Sana'a many times. A Saudi official confirmed the attacks claiming that Yemeni forces had violated the truce hundreds of times in 24 hours. However, a UN special envoy says the ceasefire, while fragile, is largely holding. He urged all parties to avoid further escalation. The three-day ceasefire that is due to end late Saturday is aimed at providing an opportunity to deliver humanitarian help to civilians. The Saudi aggression has left over 10 thousand Yemenis dead, mostly civilians. Millions of people have also been displaced and need immediate food and medicine.

Coming from Djibouti, we landed in Taiz, and we travelled by car from Taiz to Sanaa, via Jibla. Scenes of the countryside are very interesting. At that time, Yemen was divided into two different countries : North Yemen (Sanaa) and South Yemen (Aden).. I downloaded a new release (same footages but with new soundtrack) in which the music has been changed for Yemeni music.

Saudi Arabia’s airstrikes have targeted a number of areas across Yemen including the capital, Sana’a, killing at least two children and one woman. Yemen’s Al-Masirah TV reported that the three were killed in Saudi airstrikes against the southern Ta’izz Province’s al-Taiziyah city. Similar airstrikes were also carried out in other areas. Yemeni state media reports said at least 50 Saudi mercenaries were killed and 80 others wounded in a missile attack by Yemeni forces against a military base in Marib. Three military vehicles were also destroyed. Meanwhile, Ahmed al-Assiri, a Saudi Arabian spokesman for the airstrikes in Yemen said that although major combat operations in Yemen were coming to an end, Riyadh would continue to “work on long-term” plans in Yemen. A United Nations official said 22 children were among those killed in Hajja province in the latest in a series of airstrikes that have killed thousands of civilians since the Yemen war began.
The US-backed, Saudi-led coalition of mostly Arab states intervened militarily a year ago, launching airstrikes to prop up a Saudi-backed leader, then sending in elite forces, mostly from Persian Gulf Arab states, in an effort to suppress gains made by Ansarullah fighters.
Yemen has been under military attacks by Saudi Arabia since late March last year. At least 8,400 people, among them 2,236 children, have been killed so far and 16,015 others have sustained injuries.

Saudi Arabia’s airstrikes have targeted a number of areas across Yemen including the capital, Sana’a, killing at least two children and one woman.
Yemen’s Al-Masirah TV reported that the three were killed in Saudi airstrikes against the southern Ta’izz Province’s al-Taiziyah city. Similar airstrikes were also carried out in other areas. Yemeni state media reports said at least 50 Saudi mercenaries were killed and 80 others wounded in a missile attack by Yemeni forces against a military base in Marib. Three military vehicles were also destroyed.
Meanwhile, Ahmed al-Assiri, a Saudi Arabian spokesman for the airstrikes in Yemen said that although major combat operations in Yemen were coming to an end, Riyadh would continue to “work on long-term” plans in Yemen. Saudi Arabia has said its military coalition will scale down its killing operations in Yemen as the death toll from an alliance airstrike on the market north of the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, has increased to well over a hundred.
