Barcelona (/bɑːrsəˈloʊnə/, Catalan: [bəɾsəˈlonə], Spanish: [barθeˈlona]) is the capital city of the autonomous community of Catalonia in Spain and Spain's second most populated city, with a population of 1.6 million within its administrative limits. Its urban area extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of around 4.7 million people, being the seventh-most populous urban area in the European Union after Paris, London, Madrid, the Ruhr area, Berlin and Milan. It is the largest metropolis on the Mediterranean Sea, located on the coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, and bounded to the west by the Serra de Collserola mountain range, the tallest peak of which is 512 metres (1,680 ft) high.
Founded as a Roman city, in the Middle Ages Barcelona became the capital of the County of Barcelona. After merging with the Kingdom of Aragon, Barcelona continued to be an important city in the Crown of Aragon as an economical and administrative center of this Crown and the capital of the Principality of Catalonia. Besieged several times during its history, Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage and is today an important cultural center and a major tourist destination. Particularly renowned are the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean is located in Barcelona. The city is known for hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics as well as world-class conferences and expositions and also many international sport tournaments.
The collodion process is an early photographic process, said to have been invented, almost simultaneously, by Frederick Scott Archer and Gustave Le Gray in about 1850. During the subsequent decades of its popularity, many photographers and experimenters refined or varied the process. By the end of the 1850s it had almost entirely replaced the first practical photographic process, the daguerreotype.
"Collodion process" is usually taken to be synonymous with the "collodion wet plate process", an intricate process which required the photographic material to be coated, sensitized, exposed and developed within the span of about fifteen minutes, necessitating a portable darkroom for use in the field. Although collodion was normally used in this wet form, the material could also be used in humid ("preserved") or dry form, but at the cost of greatly increased exposure time, making these forms unsuitable for the usual work of most professional photographers—portraiture. Their use was therefore confined to landscape photography and other special applications where minutes-long exposure times were tolerable.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is in a good mood after watching his company win its first Oscar for the documentary "The White Helmets" on Sunday night. On Monday, he spoke at a keynote session during the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona. He spoke about the company's quest to expand to every part of the world and take the next steps to improve viewer's streaming experience. On the topic of buffering, Hastings said "We want to make buffering a relic like that dial tone," referring to the old dial-up modem noise made when one signed onto the internet in the early days. He said Netflix is investing in network servers, codecs and content delivery mechanisms to reduce the level of buffering. He said they are working with YouTube and the rest of the industry to learn from and improve fro...

It's also where street artists perform, shoeblacks work diligently and portrait painters tout for trade among the passing tourists. With its sunkissed beaches, and Gothic palaces it’s an Olympian city worthy of the gods and the modernist capital of the world where some of the greatest artists on earth found their fame. First off, Megan travels back in time to the city’s “grey years” - between the end of the civil war and General Franco’s death – when there was a huge zest for change, to move on to a new era. It stoked the desire to transform the city itself, while the Olympic Games bid and then the Games themselves provided extra incentive, not to mention cash. The finest architects and urban planners were persuaded to take part in this vision. The axis upon which ...

Figurativas'15 jury met in MEAM (European Museum of Modern Art) last July 2015 for the eighth painting competition of the Foundation of the Arts and Artists. In this event there was 2,459 artists from around the world. The winner of the First Prize for Painting Category is Manuel Castillero Ramirez, with the work "The day in which silence reigned in Congress." The piece, considered by the jury very critical with the current political situation, shows a chamber completely destroyed, abandoned and overrun by nature. Beyond excellent pictorial technique, the work conveys a sense of degradation and obsolescence political power. The jury of Figurativas Painting & Sculpture Competition 2015, comprosed by noted personalities from the world of contemporary art like Odd Nerdrum, Antonio Lopez, Ri...

The larger question guiding this panel concerns the transferability of models, ideas, or practices in the urban design professions. Can practices deemed successful in one city be effectively transferred to another? Likewise, can compelling ideas developed in one of the design disciplines (urban design, planning, architecture, landscape architecture) transform practices in the other? Barcelona is world-renowned for both its architecture and its regulatory successes in preserving and expanding public and green spaces, advancing the goals of urban compactness, generating a vibrant urban and cultural economy, and building infrastructure with metropolitan aims in mind. This panel, offering an opportunity for reflection and dialogue among GSD faculty, will take a closer look at the case of Barce...
Hi to all fellow urban explorers, and urban exploration devotees. Grab a coffee & some nibblies, because this time it's quite a long video (at least by my standards) The reason being, I didn't care/dare to edit out very much of this lovely country house; it had such a dreamy, gentle energy to it....really one of my favourites. A feel-good exploration. I hope you enjoy my little added 'atmosphère' in certain parts of the exploration; but aside from that little 'divertissement', we did actually hear unexplained noises in the house. While we were downstairs, we heard definite sounds of heavy movement upstairs, and when we went upstairs, the sounds started downstairs....certainly made us stop in our tracks a few times! We knew we were the only people in the place, no-one could have wandered in...
