Barcelona! After a few days in the Spanish capital, we headed over to Catalunya to see what this popular seaside city has to offer. We ended up discovering an eclectic mix of funky architecture, distinct neighbourhoods, and stretches of golden beaches. It was vibrant, it was stylish, and it was addicting. This week we are exploring another Spanish city. We are in Barcelona and this video is going to highlight 25 things to do here.
It is kind of hard to believe our time in Barcelona has expired. So final thoughts.
Well, it was a really fun city to visit. Great architecture, really nice beaches. It is very lively especially at night. The only downfall is that we were here in the middle of summer so it was super hot and super crowded and sometimes that made it a little bit difficult to enjoy. Especially at midday or in the mid-afternoon. So keep that in mind. Maybe consider visiting in the springtime, fall, winter.
Well, so what did you think of the city?
It is definitely a fun city. We had a lot of fun going to the beaches. One thing that is really different about this city compared to some other European cities though is that it is really spread out. In order for us to visit all of these different attractions we had to chunk them together into groups to visit them day by day. Overall, it was a decent city. It didn't quite click with me the same way that Madrid did. But that is just personal preference I suppose.
And that is a wrap for Barcelona! Our 5 days in the city flew by, and while this guide didn't cover everything, we hope we were able to give you a feel of what this fun seaside city has to offer. Ernest Hemingway once said it was "the most Spanish of all the cities" -- and he would be surprised if he saw it today. Madrid, the capital of Spain is undergoing something of a renaissance - new modern building works are going up all over the city, the arts are flourishing, it's home to the biggest Gay Pride in Europe, and for travelers Madrid is becoming known as the all night party capital. It's a great time to visit!
Globe Trekker Adele Ucar begins her seven day journey in Madrid marveling at Madrid-Barajas Airport's newly built terminal 4 before making her way to the city center. Day two finds her touring Madrid's old city by bicycle, visiting the Royal Palace, Madrid's newest art space the Matadero and the El Prado museum. Her visit to Madrid takes her on two separate day trips out of the city, the first to Segovia, where she feasts on roast suckling pig and visits the Roman aqueduct. Adele's second day trip is to Toledo where she visits the famous Gothic Cathedral and visits a sword maker in his factory. Back in Madrid, she visits El Rastro, the city's famous flea market, attends a bullfight at Las Ventas Stadium and enjoys a meal from one of Spain's most celebrated chefs, Paco Roncero, before ending her journey at Madrid's gay pride parade.

Barcelona
Barcelona (/bɑːrsəˈloʊnə/, Catalan: [bəɾsəˈlonə], Spanish: [barθeˈlona]) is the capital city of the autonomous community of Catalonia in Spain and Spain's second most populated city, with a population of 1.6 million within its administrative limits. Its urban area extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of around 4.7 million people, being the seventh-most populous urban area in the European Union after Paris, London, Madrid, the Ruhr area, Berlin and Milan. It is the largest metropolis on the Mediterranean Sea, located on the coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, and bounded to the west by the Serra de Collserola mountain range, the tallest peak of which is 512 metres (1,680 ft) high.
Founded as a Roman city, in the Middle Ages Barcelona became the capital of the County of Barcelona. After merging with the Kingdom of Aragon, Barcelona continued to be an important city in the Crown of Aragon as an economical and administrative center of this Crown and the capital of the Principality of Catalonia. Besieged several times during its history, Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage and is today an important cultural center and a major tourist destination. Particularly renowned are the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean is located in Barcelona. The city is known for hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics as well as world-class conferences and expositions and also many international sport tournaments.

Globe Trekker
Globe Trekker (sometimes called Pilot Guides in Australia and Thailand, and originally broadcast as Lonely Planet) is an adventure tourism television series produced by Pilot Productions. The British series was inspired by the Lonely Planet travelbooks and began airing in 1994. Globe Trekker is broadcast in over 40 countries across six continents.The program won over 20 international awards, including six American Cable Ace awards.
Program Synopsis
Each episode features a host, called a traveller, who travels with a camera crew to a country—often, a relatively exotic locale—and experiences the sights, sounds, and culture that the location has to offer. Special episodes feature in-depth city, beach, ape, dive, volcano, shopping, journey, history, festival, and food guides.
The show often goes far beyond popular tourist destinations in order to give viewers a more authentic look at local culture. Presenters usually participate in different aspects of regional life, such as attending a traditional wedding or visiting a mining community. They address the viewer directly, acting as tourists-turned-tour guides, but are also filmed interacting with locals and discovering interesting locations in (mostly) unrehearsed sequences. Globe Trekker also sometimes includes brief interviews with backpackers who share tips on independent travel in that particular country.

This week we are exploring another Spanish city. We are in Barcelona and this video is going to highlight 25 things to do here.
It is kind of hard to believe our time in Barcelona has expired. So final thoughts.
Well, it was a really fun city to visit. Great architecture, really nice beaches. It is very lively especially at night. The only downfall is that we were here in the middle of summer so it was super hot and super crowded and sometimes that made it a little bit difficult to enjoy. Especially at midday or in the mid-afternoon. So keep that in mind. Maybe consider visiting in the springtime, fall, winter.
Well, so what did you think of the city?
It is definitely a fun city. We had a lot of fun going to the beaches. One thing that is really different about this city compared to some other European cities though is that it is really spread out. In order for us to visit all of these different attractions we had to chunk them together into groups to visit them day by day. Overall, it was a decent city. It didn't quite click with me the same way that Madrid did. But that is just personal preference I suppose.
And that is a wrap for Barcelona! Our 5 days in the city flew by, and while this guide didn't cover everything, we hope we were able to give you a feel of what this fun seaside city has to offer. This week we are exploring another Spanish city. We are in Barcelona and this video is going to highlight 25 things to do here.
It is kind of hard to believe our time in Barcelona has expired. So final thoughts.
Well, it was a really fun city to visit. Great architecture, really nice beaches. It is very lively especially at night. The only downfall is that we were here in the middle of summer so it was super hot and super crowded and sometimes that made it a little bit difficult to enjoy. Especially at midday or in the mid-afternoon. So keep that in mind. Maybe consider visiting in the springtime, fall, winter.
Well, so what did you think of the city?
It is definitely a fun city. We had a lot of fun going to the beaches. One thing that is really different about this city compared to some other European cities though is that it is really spread out. In order for us to visit all of these different attractions we had to chunk them together into groups to visit them day by day. Overall, it was a decent city. It didn't quite click with me the same way that Madrid did. But that is just personal preference I suppose.
And that is a wrap for Barcelona! Our 5 days in the city flew by, and while this guide didn't cover everything, we hope we were able to give you a feel of what this fun seaside city has to offer. Travel video about destination Barcelona in Spain.
Barcelona is one of the most lively harbor cities on the Mediterranean and after Madrid, Spain's second largest city and the capital of Catalonia. Intimate squares, small palaces and tangled alleys provide a good insight into its history as Iberians, Greeks and Romans once had trading posts there.
La Rambla is a wide and shady boulevard that travels through the old town to the harbor and is where life goes on both night and day. It's also where street artists perform, shoeblacks work diligently and portrait painters tout for trade among the passing tourists.
The Museu Marítim is situated in the royal dockyards of Drassanes, that were built when the city was at its zenith. Its buildings are unique examples of Gothic architecture and the vast dimensions of the dockyard allowed 30 ships to be built simultaneously in the name of the Catalonian-Aragon crown.
Few parks are as famous as the Park Güell. With this, Antoni Gaudi created a new design concept in this fabulous garden city. At its entrance, Gaudi placed a colorful lizard as a symbol of the water that is collected in subterranean cisterns and is used for the distribution of water in the park. The city itself is also featured in Gaudi's magnificent fantasies. The Palau Güell was treated to an ostentatious roof with a great array of air shafts and chimneys. But the sight that captures the imagination of most who see it is the amazing façade of the Casa Mila, a unique apartment block without equal. Not a single wall is straight, glass and plaster were used for its façade and colourful ornamental ceramics complete the work.
Barcelona is a melting pot that ranges from Gothic to Modernism, a veritable explosion of joie de vivre and creativity.

Globe Trekker Megan McCormick travels to Barcelona in the Spanish region of Catalunya where she discovers a culture which prides itself on being different. With its sunkissed beaches, and Gothic palaces it’s an Olympian city worthy of the gods and the modernist capital of the world where some of the greatest artists on earth found their fame.
First off, Megan travels back in time to the city’s “grey years” - between the end of the civil war and General Franco’s death – when there was a huge zest for change, to move on to a new era. It stoked the desire to transform the city itself, while the Olympic Games bid and then the Games themselves provided extra incentive, not to mention cash. The finest architects and urban planners were persuaded to take part in this vision. The axis upon which the project spun was the idea to “turn Barcelona around“‘ to face the sea, creating whole swathes of beach from virtual wasteland.
Before the Civil War gripped Barcelona, one architect shaped it more than any other – and he was Antonio Gaudi. Although categorized with the Art Nouveau movement, Gaudi created an entirely original style and she takes in numerous examples of his work all over Barcelona, taking in Park Guell, and Casa Batlló and the spectacular Sagrada Familia, a large Roman Catholic basilica which is still under construction 120 years after the first brick was laid. In the Maritime Museum she learns all about Barcelona’s fascinating seafaring history. Meanwhile, at the Miró Foundation art gallery she marvels at one of the artist’s “wild paintings”entitled “Man and Woman in front of a Pile of Excrement”. Next off, she hits the Museu Picasso - the most visited art gallery in Barcelona which caters to approximately 1 million visitors annually and houses the largest collection of Picasso’s work in the world.
Next off, Megan indulges in some retail therapy taking in the iconic Las Ramblas - “rambla” means “torrent” in Arabic and it seems this boulevard was once a dried watercourse, paved over for public use in the Middle Ages. Her shopping trip ends at they city harbour where she takes in the colourful atmosphere of street performers, artists, and street vendors. She explores the Barrí Gotic - or Gothic Area - which combines the best of both worlds: shopping and culture. This the original Roman centre of Barcelona is home to bizarre antique shops, old bookshops, and thriving young fashion designers. She window-shops culinary delights like Casa del Bacau -The House of Cod - which sells only cod. Along the way she is intrigued by a shop window draped in black curtains – the Rey de La Magia was founded by famous magician Joachim Partagas 125 years ago and has been supplying great magicians ever since.
Next, she takes a road trip out of town to Cap De Creus - a haven for migratory birds and exotic fauna, it was pronounced a natural park in 1998. She journeys on to Port Lligat near where she visits the home of the surrealist painter: Salvador Dali. Along the way she takes in the picture postcard fishing town of Cadaques where Dali used to spend his summer holidays as a child and where he produced his first paintings. Opting for a sun sea and sand session, she takes a train to Sitges which is a Mecca for the gay community. This whitewashed town is clustered around a 16th century church on a promontory called La Punta. It became a resort thanks to the annual Modernista Festival organised here in the 1890s by Catalan artist Santiago Rusinyol.
She rounds off her trip and last day in Barcelona with a cable car trip up Mount Montjuic- a lush natural paradise filled with history and art – where and visits Montjuic Castle at the very summit of the Olympic mountain. Last off, she returns to the metropolis and the El Ravalbarrio where she has a final fling with a spot of Rumba Catalana. ¡Olé!

It is kind of hard to believe our time in Barcelona has expired. So final thoughts.
Well, it was a really fun city to visit. Great architecture, really nice beaches. It is very lively especially at night. The only downfall is that we were here in the middle of summer so it was super hot and super crowded and sometimes that made it a little bit difficult to enjoy. Especially at midday or in the mid-afternoon. So keep that in mind. Maybe consider visiting in the springtime, fall, winter.
Well, so what did you think of the city?
It is definitely a fun city. We had a lot of fun going to the beaches. One thing that is really different about this city compared to some other European cities though is that it is really spread out. In order for us to visit all of these different attractions we had to chunk them together into groups to visit them day by day. Overall, it was a decent city. It didn't quite click with me the same way that Madrid did. But that is just personal preference I suppose.
And that is a wrap for Barcelona! Our 5 days in the city flew by, and while this guide didn't cover everything, we hope we were able to give you a feel of what this fun seaside city has to offer. Barcelona! After a few days in the Spanish capital, we headed over to Catalunya to see what this popular seaside city has to offer. We ended up discovering an eclectic mix of funky architecture, distinct neighbourhoods, and stretches of golden beaches. It was vibrant, it was stylish, and it was addicting. Here's a look at what we got up to during our visit to this world class city.

Globe Trekker Adele Ucar begins her seven day journey in Madrid marveling at Madrid-Barajas Airport's newly built terminal 4 before making her way to the city center. Day two finds her touring Madrid's old city by bicycle, visiting the Royal Palace, Madrid's newest art space the Matadero and the El Prado museum. Her visit to Madrid takes her on two separate day trips out of the city, the first to Segovia, where she feasts on roast suckling pig and visits the Roman aqueduct. Adele's second day trip is to Toledo where she visits the famous Gothic Cathedral and visits a sword maker in his factory. Back in Madrid, she visits El Rastro, the city's famous flea market, attends a bullfight at Las Ventas Stadium and enjoys a meal from one of Spain's most celebrated chefs, Paco Roncero, before ending her journey at Madrid's gay pride parade.

Our traveller, Megan McCormick, goes downtown to the docks on the Creek, where the majority of trade is done between Iran and Dubai. Because Dubai is a trade free zone, a lot of money is made by re-exporting goods. Dubai is also known for its tax free gold. Megan takes a riverboat to the gold souk of Deira where she tries on some exquisite jewellery. If gold doesn’t your fancy, you can venture into the spice souk for some alternative retail therapy.
Dubai combines both the old and the new in the most extraordinary way. Megan travels to the Bastakia Quarter which used to be a small settlement nestled along a sandy creek.
Some of the most striking architecture can be found along Jumeira beach. The most iconic building in the area has to be the Burj Al Arab. At 320 metres high, this self styled 7 star palace is the tallest hotel in the world. Sitting on its own island, the hotel has 1000 sq metres of gold leaf and is a temple to high-class kitsch. Each one of the 202 suites has its own butler too!
Megan pauses for a moment to catch her breath before lunching at the hotels exclusive restaurant and going for a splash at the local water park.
A representative for the area also explains to Megan a new development underway for the more affluent clients; the Palm Project is probably even more ambitious than the Burj Al Arab. It will be a luxury community built on reclaimed land in the shape of a palm tree, with hotels, shops and villas.
Dubai has over 34 shopping malls, so Megan tries on an ‘abaya’, the traditional dress for Arabic women at one of the area’s most popular shopping malls.
Although it’s part of one of the more liberal Islamic countries, Dubai still takes its religion seriously. Ramadan is a good opportunity to experience religious tradition and experience the breaking of the fast. Megan talks to Taha who explains what Ramadan means to him.
Day four and Megan takes a trip out of the city to Abu Dhabi. Like Dubai, Abu Dhabi was once a remote and rather uninteresting place. Now however, the city is the business centre of the oil rich Gulf. The city also has some of the best golf courses in the world. In fact, the Emirates in Dubai host the $2 Million Dubai Desert Classic.
If golf’s not you’re thing you can go Dune bashing in off-road vehicles over huge sand dunes or experience the traditional sport of falconry, practised by the Bedouins over many generations.
Megan delves a little deeper into the culture of UAE and discovers the ‘Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding’ which gives regular tours of the Jumeira mosque. Megan notes that the faith and tradition of Islam lives hand in hand with the pressures of modern commercialism and that the people are not afraid to enjoy themselves. Once a year, during the Dubai shopping festival, the Global Village comes to town. Megan buys a lottery ticket in the hope of winning $300,000 and takes a ride on a crazy fairground ride and rounds off her trip by watching a spectacular fireworks display.

Dubai combines both the old and the new in the most extraordinary way. Megan travels to the Bastakia Quarter which used to be a small settlement nestled along a sandy creek.
Some of the most striking architecture can be found along Jumeira beach. The most iconic building in the area has to be the Burj Al Arab. At 320 metres high, this self styled 7 star palace is the tallest hotel in the world. Sitting on its own island, the hotel has 1000 sq metres of gold leaf and is a temple to high-class kitsch. Each one of the 202 suites has its own butler too!
Megan pauses for a moment to catch her breath before lunching at the hotels exclusive restaurant and going for a splash at the local water park.
A representative for the area also explains to Megan a new development underway for the more affluent clients; the Palm Project is probably even more ambitious than the Burj Al Arab. It will be a luxury community built on reclaimed land in the shape of a palm tree, with hotels, shops and villas.
Dubai has over 34 shopping malls, so Megan tries on an ‘abaya’, the traditional dress for Arabic women at one of the area’s most popular shopping malls.
Although it’s part of one of the more liberal Islamic countries, Dubai still takes its religion seriously. Ramadan is a good opportunity to experience religious tradition and experience the breaking of the fast. Megan talks to Taha who explains what Ramadan means to him.
Day four and Megan takes a trip out of the city to Abu Dhabi. Like Dubai, Abu Dhabi was once a remote and rather uninteresting place. Now however, the city is the business centre of the oil rich Gulf. The city also has some of the best golf courses in the world. In fact, the Emirates in Dubai host the $2 Million Dubai Desert Classic.
If golf’s not you’re thing you can go Dune bashing in off-road vehicles over huge sand dunes or experience the traditional sport of falconry, practised by the Bedouins over many generations.
Megan delves a little deeper into the culture of UAE and discovers the ‘Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding’ which gives regular tours of the Jumeira mosque. Megan notes that the faith and tradition of Islam lives hand in hand with the pressures of modern commercialism and that the people are not afraid to enjoy themselves. Once a year, during the Dubai shopping festival, the Global Village comes to town. Megan buys a lottery ticket in the hope of winning $300,000 and takes a ride on a crazy fairground ride and rounds off her trip by watching a spectacular fireworks display.
