Alois Maxwell "Al" Hirt (November 7, 1922 – April 27, 1999) was an American trumpeter and bandleader. He is best remembered for his million-selling recordings of "Java" and the accompanying album Honey in the Horn (1963), and for the theme song to The Green Hornet. His nicknames included "Jumbo" and "The Round Mound of Sound". Colin Escott, an author of musician biographies, wrote that RCA Victor Records, for which Hirt had recorded most of his best-selling recordings and for which he had spent much of his professional recording career, had dubbed him with another moniker: "The King." Hirt was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in November 2009.
Hirt was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, the son of a police officer. At the age of six, he was given his first trumpet, which had been purchased at a local pawnshop. He would play in the Junior Police Band with the children of Alcide Nunez, and by the age of 16, Hirt was playing professionally, often with his friend Pete Fountain. During this time, he was hired to play at the local horse racing track, beginning a six-decade connection to the sport.
West Virginia i/ˌwɛst vərˈdʒɪnjə/ is a state located in the Appalachian region of the Southern United States. It is bordered by Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Ohio to the northwest, Pennsylvania to the north (and, slightly, east), and Maryland to the northeast. West Virginia is the 41st largest by area and the 38th most populous of the 50 United States. The capital and largest city is Charleston.
West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions of 1861, in which delegates from some Unionist counties of northwestern Virginia decided to break away from Virginia during the American Civil War, although they included many secessionist counties in the new state. West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key Civil War border state. West Virginia was the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state, the first to separate from any state since Maine separated from Massachusetts, and was one of two states formed during the American Civil War (the other being Nevada, which separated from Utah Territory).
Charleston is the capital and largest city of the State of West Virginia. It is located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha Rivers in Kanawha County. As of the 2013 Census Estimate, it had a population of 50,821, while its metropolitan area had 224,743. It is a center of government, commerce, and industry. Early industries important to Charleston included salt and the first natural gas well. Later, coal became central to economic prosperity in the city and the surrounding area. Today, trade, utilities, government, medicine, and education play central roles in the city's economy.
The first permanent settlement, Ft. Lee, was built in 1788. In 1791, Daniel Boone was a member of the Kanawha County Assembly.
Charleston is the home of the West Virginia Power (formerly the Charleston Alley Cats and the Charleston Wheelers) minor league baseball team, the West Virginia Wild minor league basketball team, and the annual 15-mile (24 km) Charleston Distance Run. Yeager Airport and the University of Charleston are also located in the city. West Virginia University and the WVU Institute of Technology (aka West Virginia Tech), Marshall University, and West Virginia State University also have higher education campuses in the area.

Stephen Hawking joins in to add a funny line or two. A trumpet player attempts to perform while vomiting at a disgusting scene. They both sense in Pat the answer to their problems. They both head for the Hubbard ranch and are met by Pat's sister Beth ('Kristin Harmon' (qv)as Kristin Nelson), who tells them that Pat is only interested in becoming a cattle-barn auctioneer. This evolves into two romances, six songs sung by would-be-auctioneer Pat, some misunderstandings, and a whole lot of traveling music. Producer Wendell Niles Jr. would later produce better shows.

This is the interview with Pete Fountain and Al Hirt during intermission of the Pete Fountain/Al Hirt concert at Wolf Trap in 1979. It starts with a history of Jazz in New Orleans and the roots of Jazz that came from and out of New Orleans.
The Al Hirt Club operated at 501 Bourbon Street from 1962 to 1983. Chicago-born pianist Ronnie Kole was Hirt's opening act in the club before Kole opened his own French Quarter club, Kole's Corner. In an excerpt from an interview recorded June 14, 2013, for Pocket Fiyo, Kole recalls Hirt's club. Read more about Kole at RonnnieKole.com. Video by Maurice Walker. A free, nonprofit smart-phone app, Pocket Fiyo is a guide to New Orleans music landmarks, benefiting the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic and The Roots of Music Marching Crusaders.
