Claire Aristides’ delicate, feminine, fine jewellery is instantly recognisable, but the Sydney-based designer says evolution is the key to creative success.
How long have you been designing?
I first began designing fashion jewellery 10 years ago in London. That morphed into fine jewellery design, which is very dear to my heart. Fashion jewellery was about fast turnarounds and volumes whereas fine jewellery design centres around staples, classics, jewels to cherish.
Your style is very recognisable. Tell us how you found that voice.
That’s interesting, because I find my style evolves all the time. And I hope I am challenging that voice – if you have the voice down pat, designing and creating a collection could become too predictable.
Why fine jewellery? The materials are premium, and the dollar must bring with it challenges…
Yes, but in this environment, people want jewels that have meaning and sentiment. My jewellery is often purchased for a 21st, a 40th, a marriage proposal, the birth of a child – incredibly personal and sentimental milestones, so materials need to be premium.
How do your products stand out?
If you are always watching your competitors over your shoulder, you aren’t free to create something meaningful within your own brand. There are obviously trends, and fine jewellery has become much more fashion-driven anyway, so you do see certain “looks”. I try to let go of what everyone else is doing and create pieces that will be loved. Also, now that customers are so much more interactive via social media, they tell us what they want, too.
Who has inspired you?
My father’s sudden and unexpected illness was a defining moment for me. It was the catalyst to give up my day job and take the plunge into designing full-time.
What are you most proud of achieving in your career?
I’m most proud of creating a movement, a passion, a style that embodies me and that has transpired into a brand and a business that I love dearly.
