Folk music

Folk music includes both traditional music and the genre that evolved from it during the 20th century folk revival. The term originated in the 19th century but is often applied to music that is older than that. Some types of folk music are also called world music.

Traditional folk music has been defined in several ways: as music transmitted orally, or as music with unknown composers. It has been contrasted with commercial and classical styles. One meaning often given is that of old songs, with no known composers; another is music that has been transmitted and evolved by a process of oral transmission or performed by custom over a long period of time.

Starting in the mid-20th century a new form of popular folk music evolved from traditional folk music. This process and period is called the (second) folk revival and reached a zenith in the 1960s. This form of music is sometimes called contemporary folk music or folk revival music to distinguish it from earlier folk forms. Smaller similar revivals have occurred elsewhere in the world at other times, but the term folk music has typically not been applied to the new music created during those revivals. This type of folk music also includes fusion genres such as folk rock, folk metal, electric folk, and others. While contemporary folk music is a genre generally distinct from traditional folk music, in English it shares the same name, and it often shares the same performers and venues as traditional folk music. Even individual songs may be a blend of the two.

Song

A song is a single (and often standalone) work of music intended to be sung by the human voice with distinct and fixed pitches and patterns using sound and silence and a variety of forms that often include the repetition of sections. Written words created specifically for music or for which music is specifically created, are called lyrics. If a pre-existing poem is set to composed music in classical music it is an art song. Songs that are sung on repeated pitches without distinct contours and patterns that rise and fall are called chants. Songs in a simple style that are learned informally are often referred to as folk songs. Songs that are composed for professional singers are called popular songs. These songs, which have broad appeal, are often composed by professional songwriters, composers and lyricists. Art songs are composed by trained classical composers for concert performances. Songs are performed live and recorded. Songs may also appear in plays, musical theatre, stage shows of any form, and within operas.

Anusheh Anadil

Anusheh Anadil is a Bangladeshi musician, artist, cultural activist, mother and entrepreneur.

Early life and career

As a child Anusheh was trained in north Indian classical music. Through her encounters with the Bauls and Fakirs of Bengal she found a connection to the philosophy and music they presented. It inspired her to choose this form of music where she found more freedom to express her own thoughts. She began performing with the band Bangla in 1998. Bangla was highly influential in reintroducing the philosophies and folk culture of Bengal. Anusheh has sung for a number of Albums, Documentaries, movies and TV serials both in Bangladesh and Internationally. In 2012 Anusheh released her solo album "Rai" which consisted of songs written by her and two of revolutionary film maker Tareq Masud's songs. Tarek Masud had also filmed one of Bangla's music videos named 'Kanaar Haat Bajar' and had helped Anusheh with the making of Bangla's second album Prottutponnomotitto, which questions dogmatic religious beliefs. Bangla's first album Kingkortobbobimuro, second album Prottutponnomotitto and Anusheh's solo album Rai, are all albums that makes us question our core belief systems and reminds us of that no change is possible unless a revolution starts within ourselves first.

Whale Song (novel)

Whale Song is a novel by Canadian author Cheryl Kaye Tardif. Whale Song was first self-published by Trafford Publishing in 2003. In the spring of 2006, the novel was picked up by Kunati Inc. Book Publishers, a Canadian publisher with offices in Ontario, Canada, and Florida, US and this second edition was released on April 1, 2007. In 2010, Whale Song was published as a third edition by Imajin Books, in trade paperback and ebook editions.

Plot summary

Thirteen years prior to the start of the book, Sarah Richardson’s life was shattered after the assisted suicide of her mother who was battling a debillitating disease. The shocking tragedy left a grief-stricken teen-aged Sarah with partial amnesia. A familiar voice from her past sends Sarah, now a talented mid-twenties advertising executive, back to her buried past.

Torn by nightmares and visions of a yellow-eyed wolf, yet aided by the creatures of the Earth and by the killer whales that call to her in the night, Sarah's life parallels the native legends that were told to her by a wise old native grandmother. In the end, she must face her fears and uncover the truth―even if it destroys her.
