Why Wuppertal's Suspended Monorail Wasn't The Future Of Travel
In Wuppertal, Germany, there's the Schwebebahn: a suspended monorail that carries 80,000 people a day above the streets of the city, and above the river Wupper. It's a wonderful thing: but it wasn't the future of travel, and here's why.

Let's Ride ... The Wuppertal Schwebebahn
It's time to go Dangling! When in Germany recently on the Siemens trip I realised that just a short ride away was a railway that was a suspended monorail up in the aie, and dangles down above a river, and that I really needed to go for a ride on it ...
Thanks to Chris & Nicole for joining me, and translating for me! The German word for 'Sway' is 'Schwanken' and Christ later told me that "See it, say it, sorted" should be "Sieh es, Sag es, Geregelt"

Wuppertal Schwebebahn 1902 & 2015 side by side video
When I found these two videos:
https://youtu.be/EQs5VxNPhzk filmed in 1902
https://youtu.be/DgfRq4kEFro recorded in 2015
I realized it might be possible to line them up side by side to get an impression of what have changed after 113 years.
The left video is left intact and I tried to line up the corresponding scenes in the right one by cutting and manipulating framerates. The duplicated frames in the right video are also present in the original and makes it a bit jerky.
I made this just for fun and did not aim for a 100% match but it is still possible to see how buildings etc. have changed over time.

Schwebebahn: Why Wuppertal's Trains Are Much Cooler Than Yours
Wuppertal has possibly the world's most badass public transport: a 120-year-old swingin' suspension railway. But the question is: why? When everyone else was busy building trams and undergrounds, what made Wuppertal say "NOPE", and build this instead?

WUPPERTAL SUSPENSION RAILWAY: [ Second time lucky! ] The Schwebebahn suspended monorail.
The first time I came to Wuppertal to see this amazing suspension railway, it was a Sunday. Guess the only day of the week when the monorail doesn't operate. You got it. So, a few years later, I'm back, and it was worth the wait. This was my first ever suspended monorail, and it was a totally bizarre experience.

Wuppertal, Germany Schwebebahn
Located in the hills of Wuppertal Germany is a unique suspended railway which opened in 1901. This is the oldest monorail system in the world and the only one of its kind. It is amazing to see how this centuries old transportation is still providing fast, efficient, smooth, pollution free, traffic free transportation today! The new trains which entered service in 2017 are sleek and modern. They have a sightseers window in the back perfect for viewing the river and city from above!
This is my second visit to Wuppertal and it does not disappoint!

1902 - The flying train in Germany (New version) in color [60fps, Remastered] w/sound design
I colorized, restored and created sound design for New Version of The flying train in Wuppertaler, Germany 1902, Passengers saw Wuppertal's inhabitants crossing pedestrian bridges and taking dirt roads over a century ago. Today, the city is still famous for its "schwebebahn", a type of suspended railroad unique to Germany.
Video Restoration Process:
✔ FPS boosted to 60 frames per second
✔ Image resolution boosted up to HD
✔ Improved video sharpness and brightness
✔ Colorized only for the ambiance (not historically accurate)
✔added sound design only for the ambiance
✔restoration:(stabilisation,denoise,cleand,deblur)

Construction of this suspension railway began in 1898 and the line was ceremoniously opened in 1901, with Emperor Wilhelm II taking a test ride with wife Auguste Viktoria.
The Schwebebahn runs along a route of 13.3 kilometres (8.3 mi), at a height of about 12 metres (39 ft) above the river Wupper between Oberbarmen and Sonnborner Straße (10 kilometres or 6.2 miles) and about 8 metres (26 ft) above the valley road between Sonnborner Straße and Vohwinkel (3.3 kilometres or 2.1 miles). Only four of the 20 stops run above solid ground. The entire trip takes about 30 minutes. More than 80,000 people use the suspension monorail on a daily basis.
In 2015 the first of 31 new vehicles Generation 15 or GTW 15 trains were introduced. Through the use of three-phase asynchronous motors, this is the first time that the possibility of energy recovery during braking has been exploited. The operating voltage has been increased from 600 to 750 volts. In terms of safety, an entirely new train safety system ETCS has been installed.
Wuppertal Schwebebahn has a sister suspension railway relationships with Shonan Monorail since 2018. Shonan Monorail is a suspension railway located in Kanagawa, Japan and connects the cities between Kamakura and Fujisawa.
