Plaza Vieja (Old Square) was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square) and was founded in 1559. Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights and parties and the wealthy citizens of Havana watched from their balconies. Plaza Vieja has valuable colonial buildings from the sixteenth , eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and some examples of the early twentieth century. In the eighteenth century the square was transformed into a popular market and was the Plaza del Mercado (market ) called. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking. Since the early eighties Old Havana was declared a protected area by UNESCO and architects and restorers began with the restoration project of the Plaza Vieja. Now the whole square is restored you get a good idea of how beautiful Havana must have been.

Old Havana
Old Havana (Spanish: La Habana Vieja) is the city-center (downtown) and one of the 15 municipalities (or boroughs) forming Havana, Cuba. It has the second highest population density in the city and contains the core of the original city of Havana. The positions of the original Havana city walls are the modern boundaries of Old Havana.
Old Havana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
History
Havana Vieja was founded by the Spanish in 1519 in the natural harbor of the Bay of Havana. It became a stopping point for the treasure laden Spanish Galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. In the 17th century it was one of the main shipbuilding centers. The city was built in baroque and neoclassic style. Many buildings have fallen in ruin in the later half of the 20th century, but a number are being restored. The narrow streets of Old Havana contain many buildings, accounting for perhaps as many as one-third of the approximately 3,000 buildings found in Old Havana. It is the ancient city formed from the port, the official center and the Plaza de Armas. Old Havana was destroyed and burned by the French corsair Jacques de Sores. The pirate had taken Havana easily, plundering the city and burning much of it to the ground. After limiting the scarce defenders, De Sores left without obtaining the enormous wealth that he was hoping to find in Havana. The city remained devastated and set on fire. Since the incident, the Spanish brought biches and started building fortresses and walls to protect the city. Castillo de la Real Fuerza was the first fortress built; initiated in 1558, the construction was overseen by the engineer Bartolomé Sanchez.

Havana
Havana (/həˈvænə/; Spanish: La Habana, [la aˈβana]) is the capital city, largest city, province, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba. The city proper has a population of 2.1 million inhabitants, and it spans a total of 728.26 km2 (281.18 sq mi) – making it the largest city by area, the most populous city, and the third largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbours: Marimelena, Guanabacoa and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.
The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the continent becoming a stopping point for the treasure-laden Spanish galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592. Walls as well as forts were built to protect the old city. The sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana's harbor in 1898 was the immediate cause of the Spanish–American War.

Plaza
A plaza /ˈplɑːzə/ is an open urban public space, such as a city square.
Throughout Spanish America and the Spanish East Indies, the plaza mayor of each center of administration held three closely related institutions: the cathedral, the cabildo or administrative center, which might be incorporated in a wing of a governor's palace, and the audiencia or law court. The plaza might be large enough to serve as a military parade ground. At times of crisis or fiesta, it was the space where a large crowd might gather. Like the Italian piazza, the plaza remains a center of community life that is only equaled by the market-place.
Most colonial cities in Spanish America and the Philippines were planned around a square plaza de armas, where troops could be mustered, as the name implies, surrounded by the governor's palace and the main church. A plaza de toros is a bullring.
In modern usage, a plaza can be any gathering place on a street or between buildings, a street intersection with a statue, etc. Today's metropolitan landscapes often incorporate the "plaza" as a design element, or as an outcome of zoning regulations, building budgetary constraints, and the like. Sociologist William H. Whyte conducted an extensive study of plazas in New York City: his study humanized the way modern urban plazas are conceptualized, and helped usher in significant design changes in the making of plazas.

Old Havana and its fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage site. La Habana Vieja was first established in 1519 by the Spanish on the Bay of Havana. Cuba has seen some drastic political changes over the centuries. In contrast, Havana and especially the neighborhood of Old Havana have remained frozen in time. Most notably are the baroque and neo-classical buildings and the 1950s cars. What a visual feast for a photographer, a video maker and any visitor! There was no way I could make a comprehensive video about La Habana Vieja in just one minute. I tried to create a mixture of some of the famous sights and some images that spoke to me personally. Plaza Vieja in Havana is fully restored by UNESCO
Plaza Vieja (Old Square) was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square) and was founded in 1559. Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights and parties and the wealthy citizens of Havana watched from their balconies. Plaza Vieja has valuable colonial buildings from the sixteenth , eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and some examples of the early twentieth century. In the eighteenth century the square was transformed into a popular market and was the Plaza del Mercado (market ) called. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking. Since the early eighties Old Havana was declared a protected area by UNESCO and architects and restorers began with the restorati...

- http://MovingPostcard.com - La Habana Vieja is the proper name for the central neighborhood Old Havana in Havana, Cuba. If you visit Havana for the first time, this is where need to go. If you've visited before, you probably still want to return - even if only to sip a cold beer in the shade and watch the hustle and bustle of the streets. If you live in Havana, you may actually prefer other neighborhoods with less tourists.

La Habana Vieja (Old Havana) is the oldest neighborhood and the city center of Havana, Cuba. Old Havana and its fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage site. La Habana Vieja was first established in 1519 by the Spanish on the Bay of Havana. Cuba has seen some drastic political changes over the centuries. In contrast, Havana and especially the neighborhood of Old Havana have remained frozen in time. Most notably are the baroque and neo-classical buildings and the 1950s cars. What a visual feast for a photographer, a video maker and any visitor!
There was no way I could make a comprehensive video about La Habana Vieja in just one minute. I tried to create a mixture of some of the famous sights and some images that spoke to me personally. Depending on which video my Patreon supporters vote for, there may be a longer video about La Habana Vieja this month. In this week's video I'd like to take you on a bit of a visual tour of history. We start at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba (built in 1930), drive a Cuban classic car taxi past a mural depicting the travel of the Granma yacht (that brought the revolutionaries, including the Castro brothers, Guevara and Cienfuegos, to Cuba in 1956 to overthrow the Batista regime) and end at the Plaza de la Revolucion, completed in 1959, the year Fidel Castro came to power.
The Hotel Nacional de Cuba was very popular among the international rich and famous from the 1930s to the 1950s. Today, it has a fascinating mix of its old glamour on the outside, but (supposedly) stripped down soviet-style hospitality on the inside. All I can say is that sitting on the breezy terrace after walking the Malecón all the way from Habana Vieja and drinking the most refreshing daiquiri was one of the most luxurious experiences we had in Cuba. I should also mention that the famous hotel band Trio Los Titanes played a song for us. Usually, I can't stand musicians playing at my table. But right then and there, it was just perfect. I recorded their performance in hopes of using it in this video. But the noise of hammering in the background was too distracting in the video (although not very noticeable at the time). At the Hotel Nacional, you have an amazing view of the Malecón all the way to the Castillo del Morro Castle and Lighthouse. You can also get a glimpse at trenches and bunker entrances built during the 1962 Missile Crisis.
The Plaza de la Revolucion is the large Havana square where all the big parades and events take place. It features the José Martí Memorial: a 109 m (358 ft) tower and a statue of Martí, a Cuban hero who lived in the mid to late 1800s. Unfortunately, we were not able to enter the tower (though you're supposed to have an amazing view from up there). Famous are also the offices of the Ministries of the Interior and Communications because of the two big steel faces on their facades. One shows Che Guevara, with the quotation "Hasta la Victoria Siempre" (Until the Everlasting Victory, Always); the other shows Camilo Cienfuegos, with the quotation "Vas bien, Fidel" (You're doing fine, Fidel).
And of course, there are Cuban classic cars everywhere...

La ciudad de San Salvador es la capital de la República de El Salvador. Es, además, la cabecera del departamento y municipio homónimos. Como capital de la nación, la ciudad alberga las sedes del Gobierno y la Consejo de Ministros de El Salvador, Asamblea Legislativa, Corte Suprema de Justicia y demás instituciones y organismos del Estado, así como la residencia oficial del Presidente de la República. Es la mayor ciudad del país desde el punto de vista económico, asiento de las principales industrias y empresas de servicios de El Salvador. Es también la sede del Arzobispado católico.
Después de las victorias sobre las huestes pipiles en las batallas de Acajutla y Tacuzcalco, el conquistador Pedro de Alvarado intentó someter a los nativos de la capital del Señorío de Cuzcatlán a su arribo el 18 de junio de 1524. Los cuscatlecos, sin embargo, huyeron a las montañas vecinas y el extremeño tuvo que replegarse hacia la zona de la actual Guatemala. La primera villa de San Salvador se fundó a menos de un año de esta expedición, por una misión no documentada al mando de Gonzalo de Alvarado.La primera mención que existe acerca de este asentamiento es una carta del mismo Pedro de Alvarado en Guatemala el 6 de mayo de 1525 haciendo notar que no se podía celebrar un cabildo por la ausencia de Diego de Holguin quien había partido a tomar el puesto de Alcalde ordinario de la villa de San Salvador.
Debido a las frecuentes rebeliones en el sitio por parte de los nativos, se estableció una nueva villa en el lugar conocido actualmente como Ciudad Vieja, al sur de la actual localidad de Suchitoto (1 de abril de 1528). Su trazado original tardó quince días y llegó a ser poblada por un número de 50 a 60 viviendas,teniendo por alcaldes a Antonio de Salazar y Juan de Aguilar.
Después de la pacificación de la región, la pequeña localidad fue abandonada a poco a poco y el nuevo asentamiento se ubicó, el año de 1545, en el valle de Zalcuatitán renombrado como “Valle de las Hamacas”. Se estima que tal acampamiento estuvo en la llamada cuesta del Palo Verde, y que fue conocida como “la Aldea”. Al norte de ese emplazamiento se comenzó a trazar la Plaza Mayor, donde se ubica actualmente la Plaza Libertad; al Este, se erigió la Iglesia consagrada al Santísimo Salvador del Mundo. El 27 de septiembre de 1546, mediante trámites de los procuradores Alonso de Oliveros y Hernán Méndez de Sotomayor, y por petición del Secretario de la Real Corona Juan de Samano ante el infante don Felipe por la ausencia del emperador Carlos V de Alemania y I de España, se elevó la villa a la categoría de ciudad por Real Provisión.
Durante la época colonial la ciudad fue parte de la Alcaldía Mayor de San Salvador, y estaba bajo la autoridad principal de la región: la Capitanía General de Guatemala. En el siglo XVII, la actividad principal de esta región fue el añil, para su exportación a Europa. En la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, debido a las Reformas borbónicas, que tenían como objetivo mejorar el cobro de impuestos y crear monopolios estatales, se creó la Intendencia de San Salvador en 1785; la propia ciudad fue cabecera de su partido.
San Salvador tuvo un destacado rol en los años previos a la independencia de Centroamérica. Fue allí donde se dio la primera rebelión en 1811 en contra de las autoridades de la Capitanía, y una más en 1814, ambas sin éxito. Con la declaración del Plan de Iguala por Agustín de Iturbide, las entonces provincias de la Capitanía declararon su emancipación el 15 de septiembre de 1821. Las noticias de este suceso llegaron a San Salvador el 21 de septiembre.
A partir de entonces las antiguas intendencias fueron gobernadas independientemente. De hecho en San Salvador regía un Jefe Político. Pero, en definitiva, todas estaban aún bajo la dirección de una Junta Provisional Consultiva con sede en Guatemala. Meses después llegó desde México una invitación de Iturbide para que las provincias se unieran al nuevo Imperio. La Junta decidió su anexión el 5 de enero de 1822; solo dos ayuntamientos, de los 170 que conformaban la región, se negaron: San Salvador y San Vicente.En los siguientes dos años la ciudad enfrentó dos invasiones desde Guatemala, que las fuerzas defensoras pudieron repeler. Sin embargo, en febrero de 1823, Vicente Filísola asedió a la ciudad y la ocupó; su estadía acabó debido al retiro del poder de Iturbide.
Con el nacimiento de la República Federal de Centroamérica en 1824, la ciudad se vio envuelta en los turbulentos años que enfrentaron a liberales y conservadores. Para separarse de la influencia de poder que ejercía la ciudad de Guatemala, Francisco Morazán decidió crear un distrito federal en San Salvador en 1834. La situación caótica de la región creó un estado de pobreza general. Tal condición provocó, además, una epidemia de cólera en 1836.

Plaza Vieja (Old Square) was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square) and was founded in 1559. Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights and parties and the wealthy citizens of Havana watched from their balconies. Plaza Vieja has valuable colonial buildings from the sixteenth , eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and some examples of the early twentieth century. In the eighteenth century the square was transformed into a popular market and was the Plaza del Mercado (market ) called. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking. La Habana Vieja (Old Havana) is the oldest neighborhood and the city center of Havana, Cuba. Old Havana and its fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage site. La Habana Vieja was first established in 1519 by the Spanish on the Bay of Havana. Cuba has seen some drastic political changes over the centuries. In contrast, Havana and especially the neighborhood of Old Havana have remained frozen in time. Most notably are the baroque and neo-classical buildings and the 1950s cars. What a visual feast for a photographer, a video maker and any visitor!
There was no way I could make a comprehensive video about La Habana Vieja in just one minute. I tried to create a mixture of some of the famous sights and some images that spoke to me personally. Depending on which video my Patreon supporters vote for, there may be a longer video about La Habana Vieja this month. In this week's video I'd like to take you on a bit of a visual tour of history. We start at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba (built in 1930), drive a Cuban classic car taxi past a mural depicting the travel of the Granma yacht (that brought the revolutionaries, including the Castro brothers, Guevara and Cienfuegos, to Cuba in 1956 to overthrow the Batista regime) and end at the Plaza de la Revolucion, completed in 1959, the year Fidel Castro came to power.
The Hotel Nacional de Cuba was very popular among the international rich and famous from the 1930s to the 1950s. Today, it has a fascinating mix of its old glamour on the outside, but (supposedly) stripped down soviet-style hospitality on the inside. All I can say is that sitting on the breezy terrace after walking the Malecón all the way from Habana Vieja and drinking the most refreshing daiquiri was one of the most luxurious experiences we had in Cuba. I should also mention that the famous hotel band Trio Los Titanes played a song for us. Usually, I can't stand musicians playing at my table. But right then and there, it was just perfect. I recorded their performance in hopes of using it in this video. But the noise of hammering in the background was too distracting in the video (although not very noticeable at the time). At the Hotel Nacional, you have an amazing view of the Malecón all the way to the Castillo del Morro Castle and Lighthouse. You can also get a glimpse at trenches and bunker entrances built during the 1962 Missile Crisis.
The Plaza de la Revolucion is the large Havana square where all the big parades and events take place. It features the José Martí Memorial: a 109 m (358 ft) tower and a statue of Martí, a Cuban hero who lived in the mid to late 1800s. Unfortunately, we were not able to enter the tower (though you're supposed to have an amazing view from up there). Famous are also the offices of the Ministries of the Interior and Communications because of the two big steel faces on their facades. One shows Che Guevara, with the quotation "Hasta la Victoria Siempre" (Until the Everlasting Victory, Always); the other shows Camilo Cienfuegos, with the quotation "Vas bien, Fidel" (You're doing fine, Fidel).
And of course, there are Cuban classic cars everywhere...

In this week's video I'd like to take you on a bit of a visual tour of history. We start at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba (built in 1930), drive a Cuban classic car taxi past a mural depicting the travel of the Granma yacht (that brought the revolutionaries, including the Castro brothers, Guevara and Cienfuegos, to Cuba in 1956 to overthrow the Batista regime) and end at the Plaza de la Revolucion, completed in 1959, the year Fidel Castro came to power.

La ciudad de San Salvador es la capital de la República de El Salvador. Es, además, la cabecera del departamento y municipio homónimos. Como capital de la nación, la ciudad alberga las sedes del Gobierno y la Consejo de Ministros de El Salvador, Asamblea Legislativa, Corte Suprema de Justicia y demás instituciones y organismos del Estado, así como la residencia oficial del Presidente de la República. Es la mayor ciudad del país desde el punto de vista económico, asiento de las principales industrias y empresas de servicios de El Salvador. Es también la sede del Arzobispado católico.
Después de las victorias sobre las huestes pipiles en las batallas de Acajutla y Tacuzcalco, el conquistador Pedro de Alvarado intentó someter a los nativos de la capital del Señorío de Cuzcatlán a su arribo el 18 de junio de 1524. Los cuscatlecos, sin embargo, huyeron a las montañas vecinas y el extremeño tuvo que replegarse hacia la zona de la actual Guatemala. La primera villa de San Salvador se fundó a menos de un año de esta expedición, por una misión no documentada al mando de Gonzalo de Alvarado.La primera mención que existe acerca de este asentamiento es una carta del mismo Pedro de Alvarado en Guatemala el 6 de mayo de 1525 haciendo notar que no se podía celebrar un cabildo por la ausencia de Diego de Holguin quien había partido a tomar el puesto de Alcalde ordinario de la villa de San Salvador.
Debido a las frecuentes rebeliones en el sitio por parte de los nativos, se estableció una nueva villa en el lugar conocido actualmente como Ciudad Vieja, al sur de la actual localidad de Suchitoto (1 de abril de 1528). Su trazado original tardó quince días y llegó a ser poblada por un número de 50 a 60 viviendas,teniendo por alcaldes a Antonio de Salazar y Juan de Aguilar.
Después de la pacificación de la región, la pequeña localidad fue abandonada a poco a poco y el nuevo asentamiento se ubicó, el año de 1545, en el valle de Zalcuatitán renombrado como “Valle de las Hamacas”. Se estima que tal acampamiento estuvo en la llamada cuesta del Palo Verde, y que fue conocida como “la Aldea”. Al norte de ese emplazamiento se comenzó a trazar la Plaza Mayor, donde se ubica actualmente la Plaza Libertad; al Este, se erigió la Iglesia consagrada al Santísimo Salvador del Mundo. El 27 de septiembre de 1546, mediante trámites de los procuradores Alonso de Oliveros y Hernán Méndez de Sotomayor, y por petición del Secretario de la Real Corona Juan de Samano ante el infante don Felipe por la ausencia del emperador Carlos V de Alemania y I de España, se elevó la villa a la categoría de ciudad por Real Provisión.
Durante la época colonial la ciudad fue parte de la Alcaldía Mayor de San Salvador, y estaba bajo la autoridad principal de la región: la Capitanía General de Guatemala. En el siglo XVII, la actividad principal de esta región fue el añil, para su exportación a Europa. En la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, debido a las Reformas borbónicas, que tenían como objetivo mejorar el cobro de impuestos y crear monopolios estatales, se creó la Intendencia de San Salvador en 1785; la propia ciudad fue cabecera de su partido.
San Salvador tuvo un destacado rol en los años previos a la independencia de Centroamérica. Fue allí donde se dio la primera rebelión en 1811 en contra de las autoridades de la Capitanía, y una más en 1814, ambas sin éxito. Con la declaración del Plan de Iguala por Agustín de Iturbide, las entonces provincias de la Capitanía declararon su emancipación el 15 de septiembre de 1821. Las noticias de este suceso llegaron a San Salvador el 21 de septiembre.
A partir de entonces las antiguas intendencias fueron gobernadas independientemente. De hecho en San Salvador regía un Jefe Político. Pero, en definitiva, todas estaban aún bajo la dirección de una Junta Provisional Consultiva con sede en Guatemala. Meses después llegó desde México una invitación de Iturbide para que las provincias se unieran al nuevo Imperio. La Junta decidió su anexión el 5 de enero de 1822; solo dos ayuntamientos, de los 170 que conformaban la región, se negaron: San Salvador y San Vicente.En los siguientes dos años la ciudad enfrentó dos invasiones desde Guatemala, que las fuerzas defensoras pudieron repeler. Sin embargo, en febrero de 1823, Vicente Filísola asedió a la ciudad y la ocupó; su estadía acabó debido al retiro del poder de Iturbide.
Con el nacimiento de la República Federal de Centroamérica en 1824, la ciudad se vio envuelta en los turbulentos años que enfrentaron a liberales y conservadores. Para separarse de la influencia de poder que ejercía la ciudad de Guatemala, Francisco Morazán decidió crear un distrito federal en San Salvador en 1834. La situación caótica de la región creó un estado de pobreza general. Tal condición provocó, además, una epidemia de cólera en 1836.
