Guyana (pronounced /ɡaɪˈɑːnə/ or /ɡaɪˈænə/), officially the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, is a sovereign state on the northern mainland of South America. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Suriname to the east and Venezuela to the west. With 215,000 square kilometres (83,000 sq mi), Guyana is the third-smallest country on mainland South America after Uruguay and Suriname.
The region known as "Guyana" comprised the large shield landmass north of the Amazon River and east of the Orinoco River known as the "Land of many waters". Originally inhabited by several indigenous groups, Guyana was settled by the Dutch before coming under British control in the late 18th century. It was governed as the plantation economy of British Guiana until independence in 1966, and officially became a republic within the British Commonwealth of Nations in 1970. The legacy of British rule is reflected in the country's diverse population, which includes Indian, African, Amerindian, and multiracial groups.
South America is a continent located in the Western Hemisphere, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a relatively small portion in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also considered as a subcontinent of the Americas, which is the model used in Spanish-speaking nations and most of South America.
It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean; North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest. It includes twelve sovereign states – Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela – and two non-sovereign areas – French Guiana, an overseas department of France, and the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory (though disputed by Argentina). In addition to this, the ABC islands of the Netherlands and Trinidad and Tobago may also be considered part of South America.
South America has an area of 17,840,000 square kilometers (6,890,000 sq mi). Its population as of 2005 has been estimated at more than 371,090,000. South America ranks fourth in area (after Asia, Africa, and North America) and fifth in population (after Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America). The most populous countries are Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela and Peru.

Guyanese cuisine is very similar to the rest of the Anglo Caribbean. The food reflects the ethnic makeup of the country and its colonial history, and includes African, Creole, East Indian, Portuguese, Amerindian, Chinese and European (mostly British) influences and dishes. The food is diverse and includes dishes such as curry and roti, and Cookup Rice, the local variation on the Caribbean rice and peas. The one pot meal while not the national dish is one of the most cooked dishes. With its various versions, according to what type of meat, peas and other ingredients available, is a true reflection of the country. Dishes have been adapted to Guyanese tastes, often by the addition of herbs and spices. Unique preparations include Pepperpot, a stew of Amerindian origin made with meat, cassaree...

It's so thrilling when your country's about to win. Yuh know, You might not believe me...But there's many talent hidden deep In In the jungle of Guyana. When I was working bush (2012-14) I saw some talented swimmers, Swimming across rivers with rapid running water (just for fun). I know someone who swam across the Demerara river! I saw strong young guys who are really good at running, But nobody really know they exist. Islands right In the Essequibo river, Leguan, Wakenaam...There's people who can run really good, But they don't know the process of getting recognition. Most of them are not educated, I guess that's what everyone's expecting today!. One of the reason why those big country's winning all the medals, Is because they have enough people to participate In every single sport.

bit.ly/costajunglefish For decades, the native peoples of Guyana have struggled for economic independence. Poverty and illiteracy have forced many of the adults into a life of lawlessness and poaching while their children often flee the country to seek work in Brazil's dangerous mines. But hope might be prowling in Guyana's rivers in the form of the largest freshwater fish in the world, the arapaima. Follow three expert fishermen as they undertake on a two-week voyage deep into the heart of Guyana's rainforest. Their mission: to demonstrate that the arapaima can be caught with a fly rod. If they succeed, it will prove that the country's fledgling sports fishing industry is viable. And that will mean a brighter future for the native peoples, the rainforest they call home -- and the endanger...

In a remote corner of Guyana, the tiny village of Rewa was on the verge of collapse. With no local economy and no prospects, its residents resorted to illegal poaching to survive. Costa believed that a sustainable sports fishing industry could stop the poaching and create jobs for Rewa’s residents. Challenge: Launch a campaign aimed at showing support for the Amazonian village while creating demand for eco-tourism amongst sport fishermen. Idea: We produced a documentary film, a web experience, apparel and launch party to raise awareness for the cause.
I have lived in Irvine for almost two decades. My wife Beth and I run a successful small business here and I’ve served on the Irvine Unified School Board for 7 years, including as President of the Board in 2008-2009. We have 2 children, both of whom attend Irvine Unified Schools Like many residents of Irvine, I am an immigrant to the United States. I moved to New York from Guyana, South America in 1977. I understood the importance of a quality education from an early age and I worked my way to graduate school at MIT where I received my doctorate in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Like many of you, my wife and I were attracted to Irvine by the school system, wanting our children to grow up in a community that values education. The Irvine I know has been blessed with a quality of life that ...

Viewing Guyana through a tourist eyes. Parvati dips her hands In little of Guyana culture, Discovering the gem of Kaieteur Falls, Venturing deep In the jungle, Before making her way to a Makushi Amerindian family for her lodging, Where she met the most wonderful people ever. I wish my own people would see their country through a tourist view, Instead of only the negative side - Therefore you're never able to open up and see the gem others see. To you Guyanese living abroad, Observe how a total stranger could enjoy a country, A country that It's own people would sit and talk bad about. Guyana holds the best memories of my life, I cannot throw that away for the reasons that causes you to hate my country. Parvati's so cute, I adore how she love my country.

I created and produced this short video on the Guyana rainforest and the Amerindian indigenous people living there. This is based on my visit with my 14-yr old son and others committed to education, eco-tourism and preservation of this tropical rainforest region. It is so important to educate the world about the beauty of people and place in the Amazon regions of South America. These ecosystems are constantly threatened with destruction through activities such as mining and deforestation. If we lose more of the Amazon rainforest, not only will this displace tens of thousands of peaceful indian people from their forest homes and force them into urban poverty within cities and destroy countless unique species dependent on this environment, but the entire world will suffer from the negative ...
Nestled on the Northern side of South America's Eastern edge, the forgotten French Guiana stands the testament of time reminding us of the long forgotten French colonization of the 19th century. An infusion of French culture and history intermingle with South America's ancient indigenous populations. Flying high above the rich ecosystems of the Amazon rainforest, a symphony of sounds radiate vertically above the clouded canopy. Navigating through the dusty streets of the capital city of Cayenne, it's a city society with flavours and experiences unrivaled in its diversity. Their flag and tongue may be both French in form, but their people, are far from Parisian. French Roots in the heart of the Amazon jungle. This is French Guiana. Global Warming and Climate Change is serious. The seriousness shows itself as wildfires, flooding and drought, causing sheer and furiously accelerating devastation. Globally, the seriousness is showing by all kinds of weather, changing from the average that we are used to, to surprising extremes that we suffer and die from. An up and coming destination for eco-tourism, the extravagant beauty of Guyana lures explorers from around the world. Lavish tropical rainforests blanket more than 80% of this South American nation that has remained largely untouched. The northern coastline, where 90% of the population dwells, is well developed and radically different from the dense interior forests. Originally inhabited by native tribes, Guyana experienced Dutch colonization towards the end of the 16th century. Under Dutch rule, many African slaves were imported to farm sugar plantations, and today one third of Guyana’s population is of African descent. In 1796, the British obtained control of Guyana and ruled for nearly 150 years. The British abolition of slavery created a large shortage of workers, and in response, tho...

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Apr 18 2017 (IPS) - From tourism-dependent nations like Barbados to those rich with natural resources like Guyana, climate change poses one of the biggest challenges for the countries of the Caribbean – and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by the region’s premier financial institution, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). “We are giving high priority to redressing the fallout from climate change,” says the bank’s president Dr. Warren Smith. “This is an inescapable reality, and we have made it our business to put in place the financial resources necessary to redress the effects of sea-level rise and more dangerous hurricanes.” CDB has also tapped new funding for renewable energy and for energy efficiency. For the first time, the bank has accessed a 33-million-dollar credi...

We thank you for the kool aid, reverend Jim
We´re glad to leave behind their world of sin
Our lifeless bodies fall on holy groundRotting flesh, a sacrificial mound
Were you our god or a man in a play
Who took our applause and forced us zo stay
Now all together we lived as we died
On your command by your side
Guyana in the Cult of the Damned
Give us your word for the grand final stand
Guyana in the Cult of the Damned
Give us your word for the grand final stand
In the Cult of the Damned we all worked the land
Too afraid to look up we all feared his hand
Hurry my children there isn´t much time
But we´ll read again on the other side
Be good to the children and old people first
Hand them a drink they´re dying of thirst
Bigfoot Bigfoot thrown in a well
Pulled under water screaming like hell
He told us life was just a hotel
Time to check out when he rang the bell
