An exclusive look inside the archives of a photographer whose sumptuous images of rock stars, supermodels and film legends encapsulated an era.
As a photographer, said Herb Ritts, ‘you’re trying to get to one moment with one frame that may eventually speak to your generation.’ After shooting close to two million rolls of film before his death in 2002, Ritts did just that, creating some of the most iconic images of his era — for clients including Madonna, Calvin Klein, Vogue and Rolling Stone.

Herb Ritts began his photographic career in the late 70's and gained a reputation as a master of art and commercial photography. He worked for the magazines, Interview, Esquire, Mademoiselle, Glamour, GQ, Newsweek, Harper's Bazaar, Rolling Stone, Time, Vogue, Allure, Vanity Fair. Since 1988 he directed numerous influential and award winning music videos and commercials. His fine art photography has been the subject of exhibitions worldwide, with works residing in many significant public and private collections. In his life and work, Herb Ritts was drawn to clean line and strong forms. This graphic simplicity ,who concentrated on black-and-white photography and portraits often in the style of classical Greek sculpture, allowed his images to be read and felt instantaneously.. He took many photos of famous actors, models, and more.They often challenged conventional notions of gender or race. Social history and fantasy were both captured and created by his memorable photographs of noted individuals in film, fashion, music, politics and society.
Ritts was commited to HIV/AIDS related causes, and contributed to many charitable organizations, among them amfAR, Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

Herb Ritts
Herbert "Herb" Ritts Jr. (August 13, 1952 – December 26, 2002) was an American fashion photographer who concentrated on black-and-white photography and portraits, often in the style of classical Greek sculpture.
Early life and career
Born in Los Angeles, to a Jewish family, Ritts began his career working in the family furniture business. His father, Herb Ritts Sr., was a businessman, while his mother, Shirley Ritts, was an interior designer. He moved to the East Coast to attend Bard College in New York, where he majored in economics and art history. Later, while living in Los Angeles, he became interested in photography when he and friend Richard Gere, then an aspiring actor, decided to shoot some photographs in front of an old jacked up Buick. The picture gained Ritts some coverage and he began to be more serious about photography. He photographed Brooke Shields for the cover of the Oct. 12, 1981 edition of Elle and he photographed Olivia Newton-John for her Physical album in 1981. Five years later, he would replicate that cover pose with Madonna for her 1986 release True Blue.

Herb
In general use, herbs are any plants used for food, flavoring, medicine, or perfume. Culinary use typically distinguishes herbs from spices. Herbs refer to the leafy green parts of a plant (either fresh or dried), while a "spice" is a product from another part of the plant (usually dried), including seeds, berries, bark, roots and fruits.
In botanical English the word "herb" is also used as a synonym of "herbaceous plant".
Herbs have a variety of uses including culinary, medicinal, and in some cases spiritual usage. General usage of the term "herb" differs between culinary herbs and medicinal herbs. In medicinal or spiritual use any of the parts of the plant might be considered "herbs", including leaves, roots, flowers, seeds, resin, root bark, inner bark (and cambium), berries and sometimes the pericarp or other portions of the plant.
The word "herb" is pronounced /ˈhɜːrb/ by most English-speaking countries, but /ˈɜːrb/ is common among North American speakers and those from other regions where h-dropping occurs.

Herb Ritts began his photographic career in the late 70's and gained a reputation as a master of art and commercial photography. He worked for the magazines, Interview, Esquire, Mademoiselle, Glamour, GQ, Newsweek, Harper's Bazaar, Rolling Stone, Time, Vogue, Allure, Vanity Fair. Since 1988 he directed numerous influential and award winning music videos and commercials. His fine art photography has been the subject of exhibitions worldwide, with works residing in many significant public and private collections. In his life and work, Herb Ritts was drawn to clean line and strong forms. This graphic simplicity ,who concentrated on black-and-white photography and portraits often in the style of classical Greek sculpture, allowed his images to be read and felt instantaneously.. He took many photos of famous actors, models, and more.They often challenged conventional notions of gender or race. Social history and fantasy were both captured and created by his memorable photographs of noted individuals in film, fashion, music, politics and society.
Ritts was commited to HIV/AIDS related causes, and contributed to many charitable organizations, among them amfAR, Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

À la suggestion de Madonna, il réalise également des clips musicaux comme celui du single Cherish.
En 1989, il photographie Belinda Carlisle pour son album Runaway Horses. Il réalise également des photos de Cindy Crawford pour des numéros de Playboy.

Herb Ritts est né à Los Angeles dans une famille aisée, propriétaire d'une entreprise de mobilier. En 1974, il est diplômé en économie au Bard College dans l'État de New-York puis retourne à Los Angeles pour travailler dans l'entreprise familiale comme représentant de commerce.
Toutefois, Ritts commence à prendre des cours du soir en photographie et décide de se consacrer à l'art à la fin des années 1970. Son premier succès est une série de portraits de l'acteur Richard Gere, dont certains seront publiés en couverture de magazines.
Au cours des années 1980 et 1990, Ritts travaille pour des magazines tels que Harper's Bazaar, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair et Vogue avec des portraits de célébrités et des photos artistiques de modèles.
Parmi les célébrités qu'il photographie en noir et blanc, on peut citer : Kofi Annan, Cindy Crawford, Tenzin Gyatso (le dalaï-lama), Madonna, Olivia Newton-John, Jack Nicholson, Elizabeth Taylor, Mylène Farmer et Michael Jackson.
En 1981, Ritts réalise les photos pour la couverture de l'album Physical d'Olivia Newton-John. En 1984, Ritts commence à travailler avec Madonna en réalisant l'affiche du film Recherche Susan désespérément. En 1986, Ritts réalise la photo de couverture de l'album de Madonna True Blue. À la suggestion de Madonna, il réalise également des clips musicaux comme celui du single Cherish.
En 1989, il photographie Belinda Carlisle pour son album Runaway Horses. Il réalise également des photos de Cindy Crawford pour des numéros de Playboy.

Since 1988 he directed numerous influential and award winning music videos and commercials. His fine art photography has been the subject of exhibitions worldwide, with works residing in many significant public and private collections. In his life and work, Herb Ritts was drawn to clean line and strong forms. This graphic simplicity ,who concentrated on black-and-white photography and portraits often in the style of classical Greek sculpture, allowed his images to be read and felt instantaneously.. He took many photos of famous actors, models, and more.They often challenged conventional notions of gender or race. Social history and fantasy were both captured and created by his memorable photographs of noted individuals in film, fashion, music, politics and society.
Ritts was commited to HIV/AIDS related causes, and contributed to many charitable organizations, among them amfAR, Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.
