Plot: A three-part short film about writing and literature. Together, the individual pieces make up a story greater than the sum of its parts. The first part, 'The Gamble' tells the story of a writer plagued with writer's block. When confronted by the mysterious Mr. Block himself with an offer to win the rest of his book in a game of 'simple blackjack,' the writer must choose carefully - for the more he loses, the more he begins to unwrite his story. The second part, 'The Executioner,' introduces Chairman Wales - a colorful CEO who has seen to it that art (unless it has been made solely for entertainment) has been made illegal. Muses are now criminals and forced to stand trial at the foot of Wales's lovely pet - a 19th century French guillotine. They only lack one piece of evidence to proceed - a witness testimony. The final part, 'The Celebration,' tells the story of two kingly brothers who jointly rule over their lands as ghostwriters, dictating the voice of their people. When a woman is discovered who has written her own book, the brothers engage in a rivalry to make her their queen.

The dealer is arrested and learns that the murder was witnessed by a couple of anonymous locals. Facing life imprisonment, the dealer decides to hire a hitman to eliminate all the potential witnesses. Outside a rural police station, the hired hitman starts a stopwatch, runs across a road, jumps into his car, and takes off with a screech. He drives full speed through the barren country until he reaches the remote, one street hamlet of Bartoun. He checks his stopwatch. It reads 28 minutes, 36 seconds. He sees a poster advertising a fair in the next village. The residents of Bartoun are advised to meet on main street at noon to get a ride. As the people begin to congregate the next day, the hitman walks toward them and begins shooting. He knows that he has 28 minutes and 36 seconds before the police arrive. This is a short clip from the movie North, starring a young Elijah Wood as the eponymous North. In this scene he's meeting a set of prospective Inuit parents after having left his original parents. The parents are played by Graham Greene, and Kathy Bates in some horrid redface make-up.
A movie so bad and full of horrible stereotypes that Siskel and Ebert said what about it? Tune in to see the Nostalgia Critic review North, and find out the answer!

PICTURE OF LIGHT (1994) A film by Peter Mettler 83 minutes Picture of Light takes the approach of a poetical essay documenting the search for a natural wonder: the mysterious Aurora Borealis. Its incorporeal lights and colours pouring from the sky lure a small film team of six to Canada's arctic. After strenuous and complicated technical preparations (among other things, the camera had to be protected against temperatures dropping to minus 40˚ Celsius) and with 50 pounds of batteries in their luggage, they set out on a 3000-mile train journey through practically uninhabited snowy landscapes to the end of the civilized world - Churchill, Manitoba.

A day along the North Shore of Minnesota could easily be referred to as a week of vacation. Rugged shorelines, refreshingly clean waters, waterfalls and continually varying weather make for the perfect get away. Twenty six years ago to the month, the Voyager 1 spacecraft looked back on planet Earth from a record 3.7 billion miles away. Less than one pixel was seen, a tiny blue dot in the image. Carl Sagan referred to this as the Pale Blue Dot, and subsequently named a book after it in 1994. Today we navigate this tiny dot with great precision and freedoms regularly challenged. From the book Sagan said, "From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it eve...

Arranged from A to Z in 26 segments, the video looks at the relationship between image and text. In a playful and satirical manner, it roams through past and present of the Asian experience within North America and beyond, from the Chinese railroad laborers, Hiroshima and the Korean War, to the arrivals of the Boat People and the Hong Kong money. Both simplistic and complex in its presentation, The Yellow Pages seeks to interact with the viewers, never allowing one single reading. The Yellow Pages was commissioned by PUBLIC ACCESS through an open call for an video installation/exhibition at Union Station in Toronto, 1994 to 1995. This video also exists in another version where the image and text appear on separate channels. "A mini-treatise on race, culture and desire" - San Francisco...
There's a painting of my grandfather, on my mothers side
In the hallway of our homestaed, in a special place of pride
With his bulldogs and kanakas, back in eighteen nighty three
In a linen suit and a panama, they say he looked like me.
And the story goes he came out, to make a brand new start
In an effort to forget, a sad affair of the heart
So with these romantic notions, to the colonies he came
Where he settled in the tropics and made his fortune growing cane.
Chorus:
Well let the canefields burn, let the flames rise
Let the politicians and the bankers in the city look up
In wonder at the glow at in the sky.
Let the canefield burn, let me feel no pain
When I drown my soul in whisky, and dance in the flames.
There's a photo of my parents, taken in between the wars
In London, Rome or Paris, I don't know for sure
But it hangs there in the hallway and there's one for every year
Fortunes made, and fortunes paid, for champagne souveniers.
Chorus:... let the canefields burn...
And they say they're gonna take this all away from me
The cars the cane the homestead, all my family history
Let the auctioneer open... with a price for charred remains!
Chorus:... let the canefields burn...
