Domain Name System DNS
This video is about the Domain Name System (DNS), a global system in which user friendly domain names are translated into IP addresses. It outlines what takes place when a client computer needs to contact a web site, including the roles of the Internet Service Provider’s recursive resolver, the root name server, the top level domain (TLD) servers and the authoritative name servers. The video also includes the benefits provided by the DNS distributed architecture.

Getting Started with Domain Name System (DNS) | Network Fundamentals Part 17
Getting Started with Domain Name System (DNS) | Network Fundamentals Part 17
The Domain Name System (DNS) is the elegant system used for, among other things, resolving a name to an IP address.
Think about when you put a web address into a web browser. That needs to be converted to an IP address, so the client will send the DNS server a lookup message, and the DNS server will send a response.
DNS servers contain zones, which is a container for all the information for a domain. If a DNS server has a zone for a domain, it is authoritative for that domain. If it is non-authoritative, it can make its own query, and send it to another DNS server.
Inside the zone are records. These contain the information such as name to IP mappings. This particular type is called a host or ‘A’ record. Other t...

DNS resolver connects the web browser of our computer to the DNS name servers. There are 13 sets of root name servers, logically named as Letter.root-servers.net, where Letter ranges from ‘a’ to ‘m’, and are operated by 12 different organizations. Each set has a number of servers placed around the world. TLD name server stores the information of all domain names sharing a common domain extension. Authoritative name server is the last server in the Domain Name System. It stores the IP address of the requested website
When we purchase a domain name from a registrar, Registry updates the authoritative name server for the purchased domain in the TLD name server. So, when TLD name server receives a DNS query, it forwards DNS resolver to the correct authoritative name server. DNS servers eliminate the need for humans to memorize these complex IP addresses. The only thing we need to memorize is the domain names which are easier to remember. #TechTerms

The Domain Name System (DNS) plays a very important role in modern-day networking. It's an unsung hero that allows us to use the internet in the simplest way possible. Without DNS, our connected lives would look very different.
DNS will take our domain name, and translate, or resolve it, into an IP address.
Let's say you want to go to your favourite website, so you type, www.certbros.com.
Remember, web servers do not work with domain names, so your computer needs to translate this into an IP address.
The first thing it does is check its local cache both on the computer and the browser. There’s also a local configuration file that's checked.
If there are no cache entries, your computer will send a query to something called a DNS recursive resolver asking for the IP address of certbros.com.
Once the DNS resolver receives your query, it checks its cache. If it can’t find an entry for certbros.com, it will send a request to another server, this is called a ROOT server.
The root server will then refer us to the top-level domain server (TLD) for .com. A TLD server is a server that contains information for domains with a specific extension. For example .com .org .net etc
The TLD server will then refer us to the authoritative nameserver.
The authoritative nameservers will have a record for Certbros.com and it will return the IP address to our DNS Resolver which will then send it back to our computer.
Out computer will now be able to contact the webserver using the newly discovered IP address.

Other types include a pointer (PTR), which is the reverse of the host record, the canonical name (CNAME), which is an alias, and the Mail Exchange (MX) record, which holds a list of mail servers.
When a server can’t answer a request on its own, it needs to ask another DNS server for help. One option is to configure another server as a forwarder. The server performs a recursive query, where it finds a record on the client’s behalf.
The alternative is to use root hints, where the server asks other servers for hints about where the authoritative DNS server is located. It does this using recursive queries
