Tonga ([ˈtoŋa]; Tongan: Puleʻanga Fakatuʻi ʻo Tonga), officially the Kingdom of Tonga, is a Polynesian sovereign state and archipelago comprising 177 islands of which 52 islands are inhabited. The total surface area is about 750 square kilometres (290 sq mi) scattered over 700,000 square kilometres (270,000 sq mi) of the southern Pacific Ocean. It has a population 103,000 people of whom 70% reside on the main island of Tongatapu.
Tonga stretches over about 800 kilometres (500 mi) in a north-south line – about a third of the distance from New Zealand to Hawaii. It is surrounded by Fiji and Wallis and Futuna (France) to the northwest, Samoa to the northeast, Niue to the east, Kermadec (part of New Zealand) to the southwest, and New Caledonia (France) and Vanuatu to the farther west.
Tonga became known as the Friendly Islands because of the congenial reception accorded to Captain James Cook on his first visit in 1773. He arrived at the time of the ʻinasi festival, the yearly donation of the First Fruits to the Tuʻi Tonga (the islands' paramount chief) and so received an invitation to the festivities. According to the writer William Mariner, the chiefs wanted to kill Cook during the gathering but could not agree on a plan.
New Zealand (/njuːˈziːlənd/ new-ZEE-lənd, Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu – and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.
Somewhere between 1250 and 1300 CE, Polynesians settled in the islands that were to become New Zealand, and developed a distinctive Māori culture. In 1642, Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, became the first European to sight New Zealand. In 1840, representatives of the British Crown and Māori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, making New Zealand a British colony. Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 4.5 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening arising from increased immigration. The official languages are English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language, with English predominant.
The Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) is a Polynesian-themed theme park and living museum located in Laie, on the northern shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and dedicated on October 12, 1963, the PCC occupies 42 acres (17 ha) owned by nearby Brigham Young University–Hawaii.
Within eight simulated tropical villages, performers demonstrate various arts and crafts from throughout Polynesia. Visitors may also take a free shuttle tour of the university and see the Laie Hawaii Temple and its associated visitors' center of the LDS Church.
Seventy percent of the center's approximately 1,300 employees are students at BYU-Hawaii. Although it is largely a commercial venture, PCC profits fund various scholarship programs at BYU–Hawaii. Students may work up to 20 hours per week during school terms and 40 hours during breaks.
The center was opened in 1963 as a way to provide employment and scholarships for students at BYU-Hawaii and to preserve the cultures of Polynesia. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s hukilau and luau beach gatherings to earn money to rebuild a local chapel belonging to the LDS Church, which had been destroyed in a fire. "The Hukilau Song," made famous by Alfred Apaka, was written following the composer and song's original singer, Jack Owens's visit to Lāʻi.e.'s hukilau.
A cultural center or cultural centre is an organization, building or complex that promotes culture and arts. Cultural centers can be neighborhood community arts organizations, private facilities, government-sponsored, or activist-run.

Police in the South Pacific are investigating how a yacht carrying a decomposed body and £78m worth of cocaine washed up on a deserted tropical island. Australian detectives said international law agencies had been monitoring the 13m (42ft) vessel, called JeReVe, from when it left South America until they lost contact with it last month. Two divers discovered the boat off Tonga's Vava'u island group and found a man's body when they went on board. "Also located on board that vessel were 204, 1kg (2.2lb) blocks of cocaine destined for the Australian market," acting national manager for serious and organised crime David Sharpe told a news conference. The yacht, which Tongan authorities were unable to search initially because of difficult tidal conditions and its remote location, was event...

One of the greatest open boat journeys in maritime history For over 20 years, Don had dreamt of recreating William Bligh's epic voyage of survival, with 18 of his crew, once cast adrift during the Mutiny on the "HMS Bounty" in 1789. Bligh sailed that open long boat ,nearly 4000 miles, over 48 days from Tofua, in the Kingdom of Tonga, all the way to Kupang in West Timor. It is considered one of the greatest open boat journeys in maritime history. While Building "ICE" his new 15.2mtr expedition vessel in China, Don decided it was now or never. Three years of planning and preparation saw him ready to set sail on April 28th 2010, with a crew of three. The "Talisker Bounty Boat" was a 7.3meter open whale boat, loaded to just 40cm of freeboard. It would be an attempt not to be historically corr...

This film tells the story of a group of doctors who went to the South Pacific islands of Tonga to immunize people against smallpox, using an experimental vaccination device. The narrator, one of the doctors, gives a brief history of Tonga, explaining that the small population is peaceful, isolated, and has no history of smallpox. He then explains the new jet injection gun, operated by foot pedal, which is much cheaper and more efficient than standard vaccination methods. Doctors first vaccinate the royal family which sets an example for the rest of the population, who willingly accept the vaccinations and are pleasantly surprised by the relatively painless process. After vaccinating everyone on the main island, the doctors take fishing boats out to the smaller surrounding islands to vaccin...
On Saturday 23 February 2013, Polair 3 were undertaking operations south of Coffs Harbour for flood relief, when they have come across an abandoned yacht located on Bongil Beach. Polair 3 landed nearby and the crew were able to board the yacht, checking for signs of life or if any person may have been aboard. The crew were able to establish that no person was onboard the yacht, and the investigation of how the vessel came to be on Bongil Beach swung into action. The yacht, bearing the markings 'WINDIGO' was abandoned at sea in November 2012. The two occupants of the vessel were rescued from the 'WINDIGO' after the vessel capsized in heavy seas. The rescue operation involved assets of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, Royal New Zealand Navy and a French Naval vessel. The Polair crew ...

Captain Cook 'discovers' Tahiti and Hawaii. The natives tell Cook how they navigated the vast Pacific Ocean. Later commentators dispute this, and some natives of today---many decades after ravages of their culture by outsiders--decide to rebuild the ancient navigation knowledge and traditional sailing canoes to create a new legacy of wayfinding and revive the spirit of the ancestral way as they teach others to face new horizons. Herb Kawainui Kane speaks about Thor Heyerdahl and his Kon-Tiki expedition, and then the Hokule'a (Hōkūle'a)-- a re-created ancient double-hulled voyaging canoe (vaka taurua) featured in this extract. Tonga is a magnificently beautiful country. The Kingdom is a constitutional Monarchy, modeled after England and uses English law as its base. Located in the grand South Pacific, Tonga is between Tahiti and Fiji, an independent island nation in the southern Pacific Ocean, located approximately 650 km (approximately 400 mi) southeast of Fiji and approximately 1,850 km (approximately 1,150 mi) northeast of New Zealand. We spent a lovely day on a beautiful Island called Pangaimotu Island. It is a 10-15 minute boat ride from Niku A'lofa in Tonga and I would recommend anyone to take the $45 pa'anga trip over. That price includes a nice lunch too. The Island was practically ours when we were there - not many other folk on it. Beautiful sand, sea, and a fun wreck to snorkel around. The restaurant bar is cool and the drinks prices were reasonable. The staff were also very friendly and there was a cool dog that acted as our tour guide when we walked around the island. Every now and then he would run off into the water to try and catch fish. This was one of the highlights of our trip and I could have spent a couple of days on this beautiful spot of paradise. The limestone islands they found weren't as diverse, nor as fertile as the volcanic ones they'd left, so they brought with them the domesticated animals and the food plants they would need. The Kingdom of Tonga is comprised of a number of island groups. The two most important are the Tongatapu group in the south and the Vava'u group in the north. Between them lies the Ha'apai group.
