Police release image of suspected Andrew Bolt attacker in beanie and pink scarf

Police have released an image of a man who may have been involved in assaulting conservative commentator Andrew Bolt in Melbourne last week.

Footage of the incident on June 6 showed a hooded man approaching Bolt from behind and throwing a substance, believed to be glitter and shaving cream, at his head, initiating a brawl on Lygon Street, Carlton.

Bolt punches back in alleged assault

Set upon by three men at a book launch in Melbourne, the Sky News commentator and columnist hit back against assailants he claimed showed "the riding violence of the left".

The ensuing scuffle sees Bolt pushed into a pole and then falling over chairs and tables outside a restaurant.

He fights back, kicking and punching his two assailants in the face and groin before they start to walk away.

The images released by police on Wednesday show a man in a hooded jumper with a blue and white beanie. He has a pink bandanna around his neck.

The image appears to depict someone wearing similar clothing to a man who attacked Bolt shortly after he was hit in the face with glitter and shaving foam.

The man pushes Bolt into a table after he lashes out at the initial attacker.

His bandanna slips from his face after he is struck in the head with a punch from Bolt.

No additional information accompanied the release of the image, but police said they believe the man "can assist with their enquiries".

The assault took place during the launch of The Art of the Impossible, a book on Donald Trump and the 2016 US presidential election campaign by RMIT associate professor Steve Kates.

Speaking to Fairfax Media last week, Bolt said he was sick of being targeted for his conservative beliefs and would pursue his attackers for justice and demand a charitable donation.

"I'm not a brawler," he said.

"I had one bruised knuckle and I don't care a stuff about it. I had a suit ruined and I want every cent of that paid back. And I want a hefty donation to a charity of my choice."

Melbourne Antifa, a loose collection of left-wing activists united behind "anti-fascist action", appeared to claim a role in the incident, posting on Facebook that "some of our family in solidarity were attacked by Andrew Bolt while they were protesting today".

The group argued Bolt should be imprisoned for his "violent, horrendous language".

Police are looking for three men over the attack; the two who were involved in the assault, and another who filmed it.

But the man who took footage of Bolt being ambushed said he was a photographer who simply attended the book launch expecting there would be trouble, because protesters had previously targeted the commentator.
