Innocent man Muhammed Yucel believed to be shot dead in another case of mistaken identity

A young man who was gunned down in a suburban garage after playing video games with friends is believed to be among the latest innocent victims caught in the crossfire of Melbourne's gun violence.

It's believed Muhammed Yucel, 22, was killed in a tragic case of mistaken identity when two gunmen opened fire on the garage of a Church Road home in Keysborough on May 2.

Innocent man shot dead after identity mistaken

22-year-old Muhammed Yucel was shot dead playing video games in his garage in a case of mistaken identity.

Mr Yucel had been playing video games with friends in the garage. He said goodbye to his friends about 10pm and opened the garage door that opens onto a rear laneway to walk the few hundred metres home when at least two men unleashed a volley of shots into the garage.

The gunfire killed Mr Yucel and injured two of his friends. His three other friends escaped uninjured.

Detectives had initially investigated a suggestion there had been a love triangle, but early on they believed it was a case of mistaken identity.

Police are probing the possibility the gunmen targeted the wrong house and the shooting related to a feud between warring bikie gang members, but have not ruled out that another man inside the house was the intended victim.

A police spokeswoman confirmed Echo taskforce detectives raided another house on Church Road a week after the shooting, where they arrested a 26-year-old bikie and charged him with possessing a handgun, possessing proceeds of crime and possessing steroids. He is due to face court next week.

Police confirmed the raid was linked to the homicide investigation.

Detectives are reportedly investigating if a former Mongols member was the intended target of the shooting.

It's the latest in a series of shootings where innocent Melbourne civilians have been caught in the crossfire of bungling criminals who have  shot at the wrong houses.

Fairfax Media revealed on Tuesday that a young family in Melton West have been forced to leave their home after it was shot-up in a drive-by intended for their neighbour.

Two bullets went through the top floor front bedroom window of the two-storey home while the parents and their three young children, including one with cancer, were sleeping inside.

They weren't injured, but detectives say the petrified family broke their lease and moved out the next day.

Police alleged in the Melbourne Magistrates Court this week the intended target was a witness who lived next door. The witness, who also had no criminal history, had given a statement against an alleged drug trafficker after witnessing a gun being shoved in her son's mouth.

There is another fatal case of mistaken identity that remains unsolved.

Rachad Adra, 54, was killed when bullets ripped through his Thomastown home back in 2015. His four-year-old son Kareem and wife were sleeping beside him. His wife was uninjured, but his son was seriously injured.

Police are probing whether the intended target was an organised crime figure who had lived in the street.

Meanwhile, investigations are continuing into the Keysborough shooting of Mr Yucel.

His father, Bekir Yucel, paid tribute to his son online last month.

The young man's death is said to have left Melbourne's Turkish community reeling.
