INVESTIGATES THE HISTORY, MYTH AND POPULAR CULTURE OF THE ALAMO!
On March 6, 1836 the 13-day siege of the Alamo ended. Among the dead were three men destined to become martyrs and heroes: David Crockett, James Bowie and William B. Travis. Cries of Remember the Alamo! would eventually fuel an American victory over Mexico. The Alamo and its defenders grew into enduring symbols of courage and sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds.
Controversy has always been part of the history and legend of the Alamo. Whether they hold traditional or revisionist views, people are passionate about their opinions.

Since 1836, the Alamo and its heroes have been immortalized in countless poems, songs, plays, books and movies. The films of Walt Disney starring Fess Parker inspired a Davy Crockett craze that covered the nation with coon skin caps and merchandise ranging from games to salt shakers to ladies underwear.

Martin David Robinson (September 26, 1925 December 8, 1982), known professionally as Marty Robbins, was an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.
One of the most popular and successful American country and Western singers of his era, for most of his nearly four-decade career, Robbins was rarely far from the country music charts, and several of his songs also became pop hits.
The Alamo, originally known as Mission San Antonio de Valero, is a former Roman Catholic mission and fortress compound, now a museum, in San Antonio, Texas. The compound, which originally comprised a sanctuary and surrounding buildings, was built by the Spanish Empire in the 18th century for the education of local Native Americans after their conversion to Christianity. In 1793, the mission was secularized and soon abandoned. Ten years later, it became a fortress housing the Mexican Army group the Second Flying Company of San Carlos de Parras, who likely gave the mission the name "Alamo".
Mexican soldiers held the mission until December 1835, when General Martin Perfecto de Cos surrendered it to the Texian Army following the siege of Bexar. A relatively small number of Texian soldiers then occupied the compound. Texian General Sam Houston believed the Texians did not have the manpower to hold the fort and ordered Colonel James Bowie to destroy it. Bowie chose to disregard those orders and instead worked with Colonel James C. Neill to fortify the mission. On February 23, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna led a large force of Mexican soldiers into San Antonio de Bexar and promptly initiated a siege. The siege ended on March 6, when the Mexican army attacked the Alamo; by the end of the Battle of the Alamo all or almost all of the defenders were killed. When the Mexican army retreated from Texas at the end of the Texas Revolution, they tore down many of the Alamo walls and burned some of the buildings.

"The Last Command" is a 1955 Trucolor Western film about Jim Bowie and the fall of the Alamo during the Texas War of Independence in 1836. Released during the Walt Disney Davy Crockett frenzy, the film follows Jim Bowie (Sterling Hayden), who was initially a friend to Generalissimo Antonio López de Santa Anna (J. Carrol Naish) but now sides with the Texans in their bid for independence.
The film was originally set to be produced and directed by John Wayne, but Republic Pictures head Herbert Yates wanted Wayne only to star, not produce or direct as Wayne wanted. Wayne left Republic to form Wayne-Fellows Productions. Five years later he would play Davy Crockett in, as well as direct, the three-hour-plus Todd-AO production The Alamo, released by United Artists, that featured many elements of The Last Command in its screenplay.

Battle of the Alamo
The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 – March 6, 1836) was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas, United States), killing all of the Texian defenders. Santa Anna's cruelty during the battle inspired many Texians—both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States—to join the Texian Army. Buoyed by a desire for revenge, the Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, ending the revolution.
Several months previously, Texians had driven all Mexican troops out of Mexican Texas. About 100 Texians were then garrisoned at the Alamo. The Texian force grew slightly with the arrival of reinforcements led by eventual Alamo co-commanders James Bowie and William B. Travis. On February 23, approximately 1,500 Mexicans marched into San Antonio de Béxar as the first step in a campaign to retake Texas. For the next 10 days the two armies engaged in several skirmishes with minimal casualties. Aware that his garrison could not withstand an attack by such a large force, Travis wrote multiple letters pleading for more men and supplies, but fewer than 100 reinforcements arrived there.

The Alamo, originally known as Mission San Antonio de Valero, is a former Roman Catholic mission and fortress compound, now a museum, in San Antonio, Texas. The compound, which originally comprised a sanctuary and surrounding buildings, was built by the Spanish Empire in the 18th century for the education of local Native Americans after their conversion to Christianity. In 1793, the mission was secularized and soon abandoned. Ten years later, it became a fortress housing the Mexican Army group the Second Flying Company of San Carlos de Parras, who likely gave the mission the name "Alamo".
Mexican soldiers held the mission until December 1835, when General Martin Perfecto de Cos surrendered it to the Texian Army following the siege of Bexar. A relatively small number of Texian soldiers then occupied the compound. Texian General Sam Houston believed the Texians did not have the manpower to hold the fort and ordered Colonel James Bowie to destroy it. Bowie chose to disregard those orders and instead worked with Colonel James C. Neill to fortify the mission. On February 23, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna led a large force of Mexican soldiers into San Antonio de Bexar and promptly initiated a siege. The siege ended on March 6, when the Mexican army attacked the Alamo; by the end of the Battle of the Alamo all or almost all of the defenders were killed. When the Mexican army retreated from Texas at the end of the Texas Revolution, they tore down many of the Alamo walls and burned some of the buildings.

Thanks to a series of movies about the famous Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio Texas, most Americans imagine a fight that took place mainly in front of the famous Alamo facade that's so recognizable. Thanks to a series of movies about the famous Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio Texas, most Americans imagine a fight that took place mainly in front of the famous Alamo facade that's so recognizable. No one knows where David Crockett actually died, but there's a good chance he wasn't standing on a rampart swinging his rifle at attackers who were trying to mob him. There are some who speculate he may have actually survived the battle and been executed afterward. Colonel Travis, the commander of the defenders, actually died in the first few minutes of the battle in an area more than 100 yards from there. It's believed Jim Bowie was killed in an area on the Plaza that is not even marked with a plaque of any kind today. If you don't already know where it is, you have to ask an Alamo guide to find out.
In any case, Alamo Plaza is the general area in front of the iconic "Church" facade that almost every American - certainly every Texan - would immediately recognize.
Alamo Plaza is surrounded now by several hotels, a huge mall, and dozens of tourist shops. Although the area nearby is highly commercialized, it is still a pleasant place to visit to learn more about one of the most famous places in America and what happened there on March 6th, 1836.

OUR STORY
We are Josh and Kali from Seattle, Washington. In 2015 we decided to change our lives. We sold everything we owned bought a RV and a truck starting living in our RV full time in 30 days! Full time rv living was a major change for us. We hadn't made any plans to change to this rv life until one day it hit us we couldn't "have the American Dream" and travel to. Choosing to travel meant downsizing our life and becoming minimalists. It was the BEST decision we have ever made. Now we plan to travel non-stop in our 33ft. fifth wheel full time. Join the adventure as we RV across the United States (US)
