Club Monaco partnered with advisor Jeffrey Deitch to present the crochet artwork of OLEK in an exclusive installation titled Endless Outburst This one-of-a-kind window display utilizes 250 pieces of Club Monaco clothing, which OLEK cut and crocheted, transforming vintage mannequins, a Victorian chaise lounge and chandelier forms into an enchanting sculptural installation. The artist continues her exploration of the fashion industry in Endless Outburst, by recycling clothing and samples from past and present Club Monaco collections — even the labels and the plastic bags the clothes were shipped in — OLEK speaks about the beauty of creating with one’s hands. The artist’s signature brightly colored work is featured in The Future of Fashion Is Now, the current exhibition at the Museum Bojimans Van Beuningen, Netherlands that addresses the fashion system and the role of clothing in today’s society. The installation for Club Monaco includes a short film by documentary filmmaker Helgi Felixson that shows the artist’s process. OLEK (b.1978, Poland) explores sexuality, feminist ideals and the evolution of communication through colors, conceptual exploration and meticulous detail. Her work has been exhibited in galleries, museums, and public spaces around the world, and in numerous publications and media including The New York Times, New York Magazine, Artforum, TimeOut New York, TIME Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, ARTINFO, The Huffington Post, Newsweek, Village Voice, CNN, ABC News, CBS News and NBC News. Livestream 2016-12-22 - in english - Vrijheidslezing on tour Patrisse Cullors van Black Lives Matter Arminius & De Balie organiseren op 22 december de 15e Vrijheidslezing on tour: Patrisse Cullors, mede- oprichter van Black Lives Matter. 0 Cullors is kunstenaar, activist en vrijheidsstrijder. Tijdens deze Vrijheidslezing spreekt zij samen met Janaya Khan, medeoprichter van Black Lives Matter Toronto, over de organisatie en de strategie van Black Lives Matter, de context van waaruit de beweging ontstond en de uitdagingen waar ze vandaag de dag voor staan met het naderende presidentschap van Donald Trump. Cullors, die de hashtag #blacklivesmatter in het leven riep, stond samen met Alicia Garza en Opal Tometi aan de wieg van de gelijknamige beweging. Black Lives Matter verzet zich tegen het (politie)geweld en racisme tegen de zwarte gemeenschap in de VS en komt op voor de meest gemarginaliseerde groepen in de samenleving. Het is een echte grassroots beweging, zonder hiërarchische structuur, de organisatie kent dan ook geen echte leiders. Black Lives Matter werd in drie jaar tijd een beweging met aanhangers over de hele wereld en inspireert en ‘empowert’ een nieuwe generatie jonge, zwarte activisten in hun strijd voor rechtvaardigheid, gelijke kansen en respect. Na de lezing gaat Cullors in gesprek met Nawal Mustafa, Amal Alhaag en Che Brandes Tuka over de relatie tussen het antiracisme debat in de VS en in Nederland. Panelleden: Nawal Mustafa Nawal Mustafa was born in Somalia and moved to the Netherlands at the age of 8. After witnessing her family’s long asylum procedure, that spread over a period of ten years, Nawal became fascinated by law and decided to study law. After completing an undergraduate degree in International & European Law Nawal studied a LLM Master in International law & the Law of International Organizations with a specializations in Human Rights Law from the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (The Netherlands). Currently Nawal is working at Amnesty International Netherlands and focuses on discrimination and racial profiling. Amal Alhaag Amal Alhaag is an Amsterdam based independent curator, cultural programmer and radio host with an interest in counter-culture, oral histories and global social issues. Her work explores these themes through short- and long-term collaborations with artists, institutions and audiences.Since 2008, her projects infuse music and art with current affairs, post-coloniality, digital anthropology and everyday anecdotes to invite, stage or examine ‘uncomfortable‘ issues, unknown stories and unwelcome audiences to write, share or compose narratives in impermanent settings. Previously she worked as cultural programmer at the Tolhuistuin, Amsterdam (2009-2012), and as the curator for public programming at the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam (2013/2014). Together with artist Maria Guggenbichler, Alhaag cofounded the Side Room, a discursive platform for art & intersectional theory in Amsterdam. In addition, she is currently the artistic director of contemporary urban culture platform Metro54 and curator public programming at the Research Center for Material Culture at the National Museum of World Cultures. Che Brandes Tuka Che is a journalist, researcher, human rights activist and grassroots organizer. He studied at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he committed himself to the self-organization of multicultural students as well as was politically active and organized campaigns against racism and war. After working as a staff member for the Socialist Party in the city council he moved to New York City, where he got involved with Black Lives Matter and helped to organize one of the larger protests after the non-indictment of the police officers involved in the killings of Mike Brown and Eric Garner. After New York he worked with refugees in Greece during the refugee crisis, where he organized international solidarity campaigns. He recently came back from a trip through Latin America, where he researched social movements and worked for the progressive news outlet, teleSUR. SATURDAY NOVEMBER 13. 2010 In order for the public domain to be sustainable in the long run, appropriate revenue models are needed. Such models should support both the preservation of online repositories and the injection of newly created content into those repositories. In this session our aim is to construct the roles of stakeholders and protocols of a sustainable digital public domain. This will enable us to ask questions like: which revenue models can balance the growing costs of preserving digital cultural heritage, while unlocking it for a large audience? How can consumers participate in the distribution of culture while the integrity of the cultural products is somehow preserved? How to define the boundaries of a cultural product? Who retains the intellectual property of a collective work? Do interfaces like iTunes support the production or distribution of culture in the public domain? How can public/private partnerships bolster the digital commons? Volker Grassmuck, Research Group on Public Policy for Access to Information (GPOPAI) at the School for Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH) of the University of São Paulo, and curator The Wizards of OS‰ The Sharing Licence and the new Social Contract on Culture Brazil is about to introduce a copyright law bill on the Sharing Licence. Legalizing online file-sharing in exchange for a levy on broadband Internet access has been proposed under various names ever since P2P spread like wildfire. The Sharing Licence serves to end the ‘war on sharing’ and to establish a new form of collective reciprocal exchange between authors/artists and audiences. It will make everyone better off: It gives the collective audiences of creative works — of all works, not just those voluntary free-licensed by their authors — the freedom to copy and share. It gives the collectives of authors and performing artists a fair reward in proportion to the popularity of their works. It reserves a percentage of the levy pool for the support of not yet popular authors and of authors, (e.g. of contemporary classical music) who will never be popular but whose works the collective of authors and society deem important. Originally trained as a linguist, Denis Roio (Jaromil) is an artist, theorist and programmer who is currently based in Amsterdam. Taking an alternative stance to ‘profit and power’ oriented apparatuses, he is strongly engaged in building networks as a means of sharing tools—choosing to view knowledge as a dialogical and non-hierarchical process. By channelling personal insights into collaborative action, he shows a deep understanding for the problems of our time and possible solutions. The master thesis that he successfully submitted is a philosophical assessment of the structural shortcomings emerging in the framework of a system exclusively implementing modern bank money. The result is a re-statement of the nature of money and the development of currency solutions for resilient and sustainable economies to obtain by virtue of an ecology of money. In particular, Marco focuses his research on Complementary Currencies as they have been theorised by currency architect Bernard Lietaer: they are agreements within a community to use something as a means of payment in parallel with conventional national currencies. In view of his Ph. D research, Marcoʼs attention is oriented toward Complementary Currencies systems that are deployed with FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software).
