Computer-generated imagery, more popularly known by its CGI acronym, has enabled films to capture just about every piece of science fiction and fantasy available to the human imagination. It has taken film-goers through the time from the Jurassic Park-driven age of dinosaurs all the way up to numerous takes on the look of our distant, as-of-yet-unseen future. Even stories once believed to be unfilmable, such as Where the Wild Things Are, Cloud Atlas and Life of Pi, have arrived on the big screen thanks to CGI. In the hands of the proper graphic artists and technologically savvy talents, CGI can transport the viewer seamlessly into a believable yet spell-binding world unlike our own. But placed into wrong and inadequate hands, the viewer can be taken right out of a moment they would otherwise be invested in, glimpsing behind the curtain of the film production and being forced instead to become aware of the shoddy work that has taken place behind the camera. While one might think that money, pressure and a thorough editing process might be enough to prevent any instances of poor CGI making it to the big screen, the history of blockbuster movies would suggest otherwise. It seems like an entitled and unappreciative complaint to bemoan the poor computer graphics inherent in a handful of movies. After all, CGI has given us such iconic Hollywood figures as E.T. and the shark from Jaws, not to mention allowing DreamWorks to bring life to some of the greatest kid’s films ever made.
