TK Records

TK Records was an American independent record label started by record distributor, Henry Stone in Miami, Florida, one of several labels that he founded in the 1960s and 1970s. It distributed disco stars, KC and the Sunshine Band until 1981.

"T.K." are the initials of sound engineer Terry Kane, who built Stone's recording studio on the second floor of his office in Hialeah.

TK Records is closely associated with soul/R&B and the early rise of disco music, being the label on which the second bona fide disco song (after The Hues Corporation's "Rock The Boat") to reach #1 on the pop music charts was released, "Rock Your Baby" by George McCrae in 1974. A little more than a year after McCrae's hit, the record label struck gold with KC & The Sunshine Band with five #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Get Down Tonight", "That's the Way I Like It", "Shake Your Booty", "I'm Your Boogie Man" and "Please Don't Go", while "Keep It Coming Love" topped the R&B chart as well.

Subsidiary labels included Wolf and Bold  – and other artists which impacted these and TK, include: Betty Wright (on Alston), Clarence Reid, a.k.a. Blowfly, Benny Latimore (Glades), Peter Brown (Drive), Foxy, Kracker (Dash), Jimmy "Bo" Horne (Sunshine Sound), Timmy Thomas (Glades), Little Beaver, Gwen McCrae (Cat), T-Connection (Dash), Bobby Caldwell (Clouds), and Anita Ward (Juana). Within a couple of years, TK's notability in disco music would be surpassed by other labels such as Casablanca Records and RSO Records, but, in the early years, TK was undoubtedly in the top tier of the disco genre.

Get Down Tonight

"Get Down Tonight" is a song released in 1975 on the self-titled album by the disco group KC and the Sunshine Band. The song became widely successful, becoming the first of their five No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached the top of the Hot Soul Singles chart and was an international chart hit, reaching No. 1 in Canada and charting in Australia (No. 44), Belgium (No. 11), the Netherlands (No. 5), and the UK (No. 21).

Composition

The song displays some of the signature characteristics of the disco era such as a fast tempo and repeating lyrics. The song features a distinctive introduction, in which a recorded guitar solo is rendered at double speed in a distinct shamisen rhythm over a normal-speed guitar line in the background.

The song was originally titled "What You Want Is What You Get" before KC changed the title to "Get Down Tonight".

KC and the Sunshine Band is an American musical group. Founded in 1973 in Hialeah, Florida, its style has included funk, R&B, and disco. Their best-known songs include the disco hits "That's the Way (I Like It)", "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty", "I'm Your Boogie Man", "Keep It Comin' Love", "Get Down Tonight", "Boogie Shoes", "Please Don't Go" and "Give It Up". The band took its name from lead vocalist Harry Wayne Casey's last name ("KC") and the "Sunshine Band" from KC's home state of Florida, the Sunshine State.

1970s

The group was formed in 1973 by Harry Wayne Casey (KC), a record store employee and part-timer at TK Records in Hialeah, Florida (an independent city in Dade County, Florida). KC originally called the band KC & The Sunshine Junkanoo Band, as he used studio musicians from TK and a local Junkanoo band called the Miami Junkanoo Band. He was then introduced to Richard Finch, who was doing engineering work on records for TK. This was the beginning of the Casey-Finch musical collaboration. The initial members were just Casey and Finch. Guitarist Jerome Smith (June 18, 1953 - July 28, 2000) and drummer Robert Johnson, both TK studio musicians, were added later.
