Silophone is a long-term intervention into Silo #5, an abandoned grain storage facility in the port of Montréal. A quarter of a mile long and over twenty storeys high, the building is a vast complex formed of 115 vertical storage chambers, each 30 metres tall and up to 8 metres in diameter. This structure constitutes a sonic environment with extraordinary acoustic properties, most notably a reverberation time of over 20 seconds. Sounds occurring inside the building are dramatically transformed by these unusual acoustics.
[The User] has made the acoustic space of the Silo accessible to the outside world in a number of ways, including the participative website www.silophone.net, the telephone access system +1 514 844 5555, and the “Sonic observatory,” a permanent public sound installation located near the site in Montréal. These three elements of the Silophone public instrument are online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and continue to be widely accessed by participants from around the world. In addition, a series of punctual interventions took place in galleries and performance spaces in North America and Europe between 2000 and 2003. Original works using the Silophone instrument were commissioned from twenty-five sound artists and musicians. Audio recordings of these works are available at Reservoir, Silophone’s online archive

2012: An Editing Odyssey
It's January 2012, a month before the seeds of [escape] were to be planted in my brain. I had been looking for something to sink my teeth into, and after a few script ideas just sorta came and went, I decided to do an editing project. Specifically, a music video. I've had some ideas for music videos in the past, but nothing that wouldn't require a full blown production along with the editing. That's where Outer Isolation came in.
Outer Isolation is the title track off of Vektor's 2011 masterful metal album of the same name. It's an 8 1/2 minute thrash odyssey that is about as good as it gets. Vektor isn't keen to just shred and scream about brutal things, they tell stories, and Outer Isolation is an exceptional piece of metal storytelling.
Whenever I'd listen to it, the story would coalesce in my head as random flashes of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. What to do next was pretty obvious. I was drawn to the idea both because it would be fun love letter to two of my favorite forms of entertainment (Kubrick films and thrash metal), but also because of some of the challenges that popped up. Namely, how do you cut a music video for a fast thrash metal song using footage from one of the slowest-moving films ever made?
And also, whose story do I tell? Do I tell Outer Isolation's story or 2001's? So I thought, why not try both? I set some rules. First rule: I can't cut anything out of the song and shorten it. Second rule: I have to cut 2001 linearly, so I can't reorder any scenes or shots. I took a few liberties with putting a few shots out of order, but nothing drastic, and mostly during the Stargate sequence. You'll see what I mean.
I started this project by cutting in the Stargate sequence, which was the thing I was most excited to put together. As the days passed, I eventually finished the end and began the beginning, starting at the Dawn of Man. As this went on, I found myself having trouble cutting this in a linear fashion the way I usually cut things, and instead kept shuffling back and forth, working my way toward the middle from both ends. The middle portion of the song would always give me the most trouble, and I would find myself giving up and not revisiting it for months at a time. I only mention this because upon reflection, I found it interesting that I edited it in such a non-linear way after deciding to keep the linear progression of the film and song intact.
The last time I tinkered with it was December of 2012. I still had 3 minutes right smack in the middle that were empty. I couldn't figure out what to do for that section for the entire time this project has been floating around in my head. I knew exactly what content I had to fill it with, but I couldn't figure out a way to make it flow. This weekend I went to a metal-themed birthday party and started thinking about the video again. And then the next day, in one sitting, I completed the missing three minutes.
It's been a long trek to the finish line, and it feels good to finally cross it. And now, it's yours to enjoy! Hopefully. Admittedly, the target audience for this piece is pretty narrow. You have to be a fan of thrash metal or at least open to the idea of it to enjoy this. I also wouldn't recommend watching this if you haven't seen 2001: A Space Odyssey, as it pretty much shows you the whole film in 8 1/2 minutes.
But, if you fit that demographic, I hope you check out and enjoy this thing that I've spent well over a year crafting. I think it contains some of my best editing, and I'm really happy with how it turned out in many ways.

Three Days is an American television film directed by Michael Switzer and starring Kristin Davis and Tim Meadows. This television film premiered on Fox Family in 2001 on their 25 Days of Christmas programming block. It was filmed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Summary
Ten years ago, Andrew Farmer (Reed Diamond) married his childhood sweetheart, Beth (Kristin Davis). Now Andrew is a high-powered literary agent, and his relationship with his wife has not fared as well. After a marital argument about his possible infidelity, Beth runs out at midnight and, whilst trying to retrieve their neighbors' dog in the middle of the street, she is killed by a car, on Christmas Eve. An angel, Lionel (Tim Meadows), gives Andrew the chance to relive the last three days as if his wife was alive. There's a catch: he cannot change the fate of his wife. There's only one gift he can give to save her life and he only has a very short time to figure out what that gift is. So Andrew spends three days trying to make Beth as happy and figure how to keep her alive, while finding out what he would really be losing.

This is a tribute to the wink of complicity from the filmmakers to the audience when they make actors look straight into the camera. It is not a tribute to scenes where the fourth wall is broken (when a character addresses the audience directly), some clips in the video belong to that category but most of them don't cause it is not what we wanted to show. There are 150 different clips (from 148 films) in this video, but at first I had selected more than 200 films. I left out dozens of scenes on purpose, cause I didn't want a 15 minutes montage. For example, I decided not to include the "found footage" genre, cause everyone looks at the camera in this type of movies (like "Cloverfield"). And also musical numbers, where it's very common that the actors look at the camera while singing. And, obviously, there are many more films missing cause I didn't know them. Apologies in advance for every film I discarded, forgot or missed. For example, I really regret forgetting about Kurt Russell in "Death Proof", Dick Van Dyke in "Mary Poppins" and Tilda Swinton in "Orlando". Silophone is a long-term intervention into Silo #5, an abandoned grain storage facility in the port of Montréal. A quarter of a mile long and over twenty storeys high, the building is a vast complex formed of 115 vertical storage chambers, each 30 metres tall and up to 8 metres in diameter. This structure constitutes a sonic environment with extraordinary acoustic properties, most notably a reverberation time of over 20 seconds. Sounds occurring inside the building are dramatically transformed by these unusual acoustics. This is a tribute to the wink of complicity from the filmmakers to the audience when they make actors look straight into the camera. It is not a tribute to scenes where the fourth wall is broken (when a character addresses the audience directly), some clips in the video belong to that category but most of them don't cause it is not what we wanted to show. There are 150 different clips (from 148 films) in this video, but at first I had selected more than 200 films. I left out dozens of scenes on purpose, cause I didn't want a 15 minutes montage. The Fall Of Iron Fist (2001)
This is a short film I made while studying in the great city of Cork at the outlandishly long named St. John's Central College For Further Education and Training. It was shot in two days and edited in about three days which made the experience tremendously fun and stress filled in equal measure. There are some mild technical glitches early on which has to do with the original digital tape upload being slightly damaged. And there is the worst "boom plus crew member in shot" shot of all time. And the voice-over in that scene sounds awful. In fact, that whole scene doesn't really work. We even had to shoot Denis from behind so we didn't show his newly pierced septum he wanted to hide from his parents. It was the last thing we shot on the second day before people went home for the weekend. ...

This is a short mash-up of various train scenes that I made for a local restaurant. The restaurant actually used to be a train station, and they wanted a video that they could project on a wall continuously while people dined. Working on the project for the past three months, I learned a lot about editing mash-ups. It was a lot of work, but overall I had a great time picking out the films, watching them, and outing them into sequence. 2012: An Editing Odyssey
It's January 2012, a month before the seeds of [escape] were to be planted in my brain. I had been looking for something to sink my teeth into, and after a few script ideas just sorta came and went, I decided to do an editing project. Specifically, a music video. I've had some ideas for music videos in the past, but nothing that wouldn't require a full blown production along with the editing. That's where Outer Isolation came in.
Outer Isolation is the title track off of Vektor's 2011 masterful metal album of the same name. It's an 8 1/2 minute thrash odyssey that is about as good as it gets. Vektor isn't keen to just shred and scream about brutal things, they tell stories, and Outer Isolation is an exceptional piece of metal storytelling.
Whenever I'd listen to it, the story would coalesce in my head as random flashes of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. What to do next was pretty obvious. I was drawn to the idea both because it would be fun love letter to two of my favorite forms of entertainment (Kubrick films and thrash metal), but also because of some of the challenges that popped up. Namely, how do you cut a music video for a fast thrash metal song using footage from one of the slowest-moving films ever made?
And also, whose story do I tell? Do I tell Outer Isolation's story or 2001's? So I thought, why not try both? I set some rules. First rule: I can't cut anything out of the song and shorten it. Second rule: I have to cut 2001 linearly, so I can't reorder any scenes or shots. I took a few liberties with putting a few shots out of order, but nothing drastic, and mostly during the Stargate sequence. You'll see what I mean.
I started this project by cutting in the Stargate sequence, which was the thing I was most excited to put together. As the days passed, I eventually finished the end and began the beginning, starting at the Dawn of Man. As this went on, I found myself having trouble cutting this in a linear fashion the way I usually cut things, and instead kept shuffling back and forth, working my way toward the middle from both ends. The middle portion of the song would always give me the most trouble, and I would find myself giving up and not revisiting it for months at a time. I only mention this because upon reflection, I found it interesting that I edited it in such a non-linear way after deciding to keep the linear progression of the film and song intact.
The last time I tinkered with it was December of 2012. I still had 3 minutes right smack in the middle that were empty. I couldn't figure out what to do for that section for the entire time this project has been floating around in my head. I knew exactly what content I had to fill it with, but I couldn't figure out a way to make it flow. This weekend I went to a metal-themed birthday party and started thinking about the video again. And then the next day, in one sitting, I completed the missing three minutes.
It's been a long trek to the finish line, and it feels good to finally cross it. And now, it's yours to enjoy! Hopefully. Admittedly, the target audience for this piece is pretty narrow. You have to be a fan of thrash metal or at least open to the idea of it to enjoy this. I also wouldn't recommend watching this if you haven't seen 2001: A Space Odyssey, as it pretty much shows you the whole film in 8 1/2 minutes.
But, if you fit that demographic, I hope you check out and enjoy this thing that I've spent well over a year crafting. I think it contains some of my best editing, and I'm really happy with how it turned out in many ways.

Namely, how do you cut a music video for a fast thrash metal song using footage from one of the slowest-moving films ever made?
And also, whose story do I tell? Do I tell Outer Isolation's story or 2001's? So I thought, why not try both? I set some rules. First rule: I can't cut anything out of the song and shorten it. Second rule: I have to cut 2001 linearly, so I can't reorder any scenes or shots. I took a few liberties with putting a few shots out of order, but nothing drastic, and mostly during the Stargate sequence. You'll see what I mean.
I started this project by cutting in the Stargate sequence, which was the thing I was most excited to put together. As the days passed, I eventually finished the end and began the beginning, starting at the Dawn of Man. As this went on, I found myself having trouble cutting this in a linear fashion the way I usually cut things, and instead kept shuffling back and forth, working my way toward the middle from both ends. The middle portion of the song would always give me the most trouble, and I would find myself giving up and not revisiting it for months at a time. I only mention this because upon reflection, I found it interesting that I edited it in such a non-linear way after deciding to keep the linear progression of the film and song intact.
The last time I tinkered with it was December of 2012. I still had 3 minutes right smack in the middle that were empty. I couldn't figure out what to do for that section for the entire time this project has been floating around in my head. I knew exactly what content I had to fill it with, but I couldn't figure out a way to make it flow. This weekend I went to a metal-themed birthday party and started thinking about the video again. And then the next day, in one sitting, I completed the missing three minutes.
It's been a long trek to the finish line, and it feels good to finally cross it. And now, it's yours to enjoy! Hopefully. Admittedly, the target audience for this piece is pretty narrow. You have to be a fan of thrash metal or at least open to the idea of it to enjoy this. I also wouldn't recommend watching this if you haven't seen 2001: A Space Odyssey, as it pretty much shows you the whole film in 8 1/2 minutes.
But, if you fit that demographic, I hope you check out and enjoy this thing that I've spent well over a year crafting. I think it contains some of my best editing, and I'm really happy with how it turned out in many ways.

This is a tribute to the wink of complicity from the filmmakers to the audience when they make actors look straight into the camera. It is not a tribute to scenes where the fourth wall is broken (when a character addresses the audience directly), some clips in the video belong to that category but most of them don't cause it is not what we wanted to show.
There are 150 different clips (from 148 films) in this video, but at first I had selected more than 200 films. I left out dozens of scenes on purpose, cause I didn't want a 15 minutes montage. For example, I decided not to include the "found footage" genre, cause everyone looks at the camera in this type of movies (like "Cloverfield"). And also musical numbers, where it's very common that the actors look at the camera while singing. And, obviously, there are many more films missing cause I didn't know them. Apologies in advance for every film I discarded, forgot or missed. For example, I really regret forgetting about Kurt Russell in "Death Proof", Dick Van Dyke in "Mary Poppins" and Tilda Swinton in "Orlando".

Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. There are some people clearly born to follow the path they have chosen from the start. Mani Nasry has the passion to succeed, the curiosity and ingenuity required to lead and collaborate in an industry known for its impact and appeal, and the strength of character and work ethic to immerse himself in finding and telling an unforgettable story.

This is a short film I made while studying in the great city of Cork at the outlandishly long named St. John's Central College For Further Education and Trainin...
This is a short film I made while studying in the great city of Cork at the outlandishly long named St. John's Central College For Further Education and Training.
It was shot in two days and edited in about three days which made the experience tremendously fun and stress filled in equal measure.
There are some mild technical glitches early on which has to do with the original digital tape upload being slightly damaged. And there is the worst "boom plus crew member in shot" shot of all time. And the voice-over in that scene sounds awful. In fact, that whole scene doesn't really work. We even had to shoot Denis from behind so we didn't show his newly pierced septum he wanted to hide from his parents. It was the last thing we shot on the second day before people went home for the weekend.
I thought that this film was lost in the mists of time but here it is!
Things to note then?. Well, for starters I have a handlebar and soul patch combination which is offset nicely by Denis' mutton chops. The location was Denis' actual house where we basically played video games on the (google it kids) Playstation One all day long eating pancakes and so on. So I wrote a sitcom like script based around that because we had the locations and costumes from real life. Then I did some funky editing and added music to make it all cool like. What can I say, I was young.
So I hope you can see where I'm coming from by looking at where I've been and thanks to all my friends who made this with me. Enjoy!

This is a short mash-up of various train scenes that I made for a local restaurant. The restaurant actually used to be a train station, and they wanted a video that they could project on a wall continuously while people dined.
Working on the project for the past three months, I learned a lot about editing mash-ups. It was a lot of work, but overall I had a great time picking out the films, watching them, and outing them into sequence.

This is a short mash-up of various train scenes that I made for a local restaurant. The restaurant actually used to be a train station, and they wanted a video that they could project on a wall continuously while people dined.
Working on the project for the past three months, I learned a lot about editing mash-ups. It was a lot of work, but overall I had a great time picking out the films, watching them, and outing them into sequence.
