Ben Crane (Kurt Russell) believes that a severely injured racehorse deserves another chance. He and his daughter Cale (Dakota Fanning) adopt the horse (in fact is a mare)and save it of being sacrificed by the owner (David Morse). The arrival of the mare to Crane's farm, will be the perfect opportunity for both father and daughter to reconstruct their lost familiar bond.
You have to wonder just how many times a movie like this can be remade before people just get plain sick and tired of them. But Dreamer plays to the age old dreams of little girls (and some boys) everywhere, and it's wholesome entertainment with enough big name actors to keep the imaginations of the parents alive in the theatre as well. In this case, the "inspired by a true story" addendum is slapped on to the title to remind us of a horse named Mariah's Storm that accomplished between 1993 and 1995 the exact feat we are presented with in Dreamer: a promising horse that breaks its leg in a race (an all-too-common occurrence in the modern age of cortisone shots for horses... but that's a whole other controversy) but is mended against all odds to win a major race for its destitute owner. For the purposes of good moviemaking, you throw in a little girl, a mysterious grandparent (Dakota Fanning and Kris Kristofferson rarely hurt any film they're in), a resolute Kurt Russell, and hope the script works. First-time director John Gatins is also the first-time screenwriter, and indications from the critics are that the film plays exactly as it should to the right audience. The beautiful setting of Kentucky as well as the feel-good nature of the story would merit the ultimate in pastoral scores, and while Hollywood veteran John Debney seems like the perfect choice for the project, Gatins was originally slated to employ Jan A.P. Kaczmarek for Dreamer. Perhaps choosing Kaczmarek simply because of his Academy Award win early in the year, Gatins was witness to the firing of Kaczmarek for reasons not precisely known, but perhaps due to the composer's poor genre placement in the first place. Thus, John Debney, not only the ultimate expert in score replacement, expansion, and temp-track emulation, but also a composer familiar with heroic sports and Americana stories, was hired to provide the predictable score. In fact, Debney's job is preformed so well, that Dreamer fits every stereotype he was likely asked to recreate.
The important part of Debney's work for Dreamer, however, is that despite his ability to gladly provide the same score that dozens have written before, he does so with a highly emotional performance and superior recording quality. For fans, we may listen to the score and debate which six or seven scores its pretty, orchestral themes of the heartland are inspired by, and yet to the average parent and his/her eight-year-old, Debney has done a fantastic job. Dreamer really is a pleasant, enjoyable score to relax to on a sunny day, with flowing performances by soloists that provide just enough country atmosphere without irritating those of us who don't care much for that environment. The traditional orchestra is accompanied by acoustic guitars, dulcimer, mandola, and the more prominent solos by Joshua Bell on violin and Michael Lang on piano. There is definitely some James Horner sensibility to be heard with these solos, but Debney achieves that extra level of child-like exuberance through the rhythmically propulsive sections in which the full strings ramble over the acoustic guitars. The themes are a bit anonymous, but their harmony is never in question, and once again Debney's talents at mutating temp scores such as Legends of the Fall and (especially) Black Beauty into a convincingly fresh idea must be commended. The only disappointment regarding the score for Dreamer is that the talents of Bell and Lang aren't utilized with enough emphasis (outside of obvious uses, such as the violin solos in the opening cue) to give these Debney themes an identity that would stand out after the film is over. This seems to be a characteristic inherent in horse racing film scores (from The Black Stallion to Seabiscuit in the modern age), and one thing Dreamer also reminds us of is just how funny, unique, and remarkable Mark Isham's score for Racing Stripes was earlier in the year. On album, Dreamer is a lengthy exercise in undemanding and pleasant listening, with the expected flourishes of hope and sustained action of the finale. Several alternate mixes (including one that proves that the violin solos in the opening cue were severely underplayed in the film) are concluded with one unfortunate pop song as a hidden track. Overall, Debney's work is a winner in its genre.

Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story (also known as Dreamer) is a 2005 American family sports drama film written and directed by John Gatins in his directorial debut, and stars Kurt Russell, Kris Kristofferson, Elisabeth Shue and Dakota Fanning. It is inspired by the true story of an injured Thoroughbred racehorse named Mariah's Storm. Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2005 and was theatrically released on October 21, 2005 by DreamWorks Pictures. The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics and it earned $38,741,732 on a $32 million budget. It also received a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Family Film. Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story was released on DVD, Blu-ray and VHS on March 21, 2006 by Roadshow Entertainment.

Showreel Breakdown: Modelling Personal Project - Old Man This was a personal project of mine, I wanted to create a more realistic model and develop my skills in ZBrush. The model was completely created and rendered in ZBrush. Personal Project - Batmobile This was another personal project of mine, I wanted to create a replica of a real life object and decided on creating the Batmobile. It was modelled and textured in Maya. Sony Masterclass – Character design This project was set at Bournemouth University by Sony, the aim was to create a monster based on real life animals. I had a 10,000 polygon limit and four 512x512 texture maps for Diffuse, Specular and Normal maps. I designed, modelled, textured and normal mapped the model. The base based was created in Maya and textured and normal mapped in Mudbox. Major Project was an animation created by myself and Olly Fisk called Diva Dreams. For this project I was the Lead modeller. Major Project - Bar Environment The Bar environment is the first location of the animation and the type was a 50's/60's Jazz bar. All the environment and background characters were created myself. Everything was created in Maya. Major Project - Bathroom Environment The bathroom environment is the second location for the animation and was set in modern day. It was created in Maya. Major Project - Diva The Diva character was the one of the main characters in the Animation. She is meant to be confidant, Sassy and a Diva. She was modelled in Maya. Major Project - Dreamer The Dreamer character is the opposite to the Diva character, She is shy and a terrible singer. She was modelled in Maya. Animation Major Project - Bar This animation is the third scene from the Diva Dreams film. Major Project - Bathroom This animation is the final scene fromt he Diva Dreams film. Animation Project This animation is a third year project set at Bournemouth Uni, The project was to take a 10 second audio clip from a film and create my own interpretation of the performance. Compositing Major Project - Bathroom The first clip shows final scene in the animation of the Dreamer character being caught in the bath. I modelled the character/environment, rendered and composited this scene. Major Project - Bar The second clip shows the third shot of the animation. It shows the Diva character singing to the audience. I modelled the character/environment, rendered and composited this scene. CG Intergration The third clip shows a second year compositing project. I only composited this clip. Innovations Project The final two clips shows two of the techniques I created for a stylised camouflage technique for animation. The first technique I used fake refractions in Nuke using a rendered normal pass from a displacement map of the Chameleon in Maya. The second technique was using image plane projection. But Dreamer plays to the age old dreams of little girls (and some boys) everywhere, and it's wholesome entertainment with enough big name actors to keep the imaginations of the parents alive in the theatre as well. In this case, the "inspired by a true story" addendum is slapped on to the title to remind us of a horse named Mariah's Storm that accomplished between 1993 and 1995 the exact feat we are presented with in Dreamer: a promising horse that breaks its leg in a race (an all-too-common occurrence in the modern age of cortisone shots for horses... but that's a whole other controversy) but is mended against all odds to win a major race for its destitute owner. For the purposes of good moviemaking, you throw in a little girl, a mysterious grandparent (Dakota Fanning and Kris Kristofferson rarely hurt any film they're in), a resolute Kurt Russell, and hope the script works. First-time director John Gatins is also the first-time screenwriter, and indications from the critics are that the film plays exactly as it should to the right audience. The beautiful setting of Kentucky as well as the feel-good nature of the story would merit the ultimate in pastoral scores, and while Hollywood veteran John Debney seems like the perfect choice for the project, Gatins was originally slated to employ Jan A.P. Kaczmarek for Dreamer. Perhaps choosing Kaczmarek simply because of his Academy Award win early in the year, Gatins was witness to the firing of Kaczmarek for reasons not precisely known, but perhaps due to the composer's poor genre placement in the first place. Thus, John Debney, not only the ultimate expert in score replacement, expansion, and temp-track emulation, but also a composer familiar with heroic sports and Americana stories, was hired to provide the predictable score. In fact, Debney's job is preformed so well, that Dreamer fits every stereotype he was likely asked to recreate.
The important part of Debney's work for Dreamer, however, is that despite his ability to gladly provide the same score that dozens have written before, he does so with a highly emotional performance and superior recording quality. For fans, we may listen to the score and debate which six or seven scores its pretty, orchestral themes of the heartland are inspired by, and yet to the average parent and his/her eight-year-old, Debney has done a fantastic job. Dreamer really is a pleasant, enjoyable score to relax to on a sunny day, with flowing performances by soloists that provide just enough country atmosphere without irritating those of us who don't care much for that environment. The traditional orchestra is accompanied by acoustic guitars, dulcimer, mandola, and the more prominent solos by Joshua Bell on violin and Michael Lang on piano. There is definitely some James Horner sensibility to be heard with these solos, but Debney achieves that extra level of child-like exuberance through the rhythmically propulsive sections in which the full strings ramble over the acoustic guitars. The themes are a bit anonymous, but their harmony is never in question, and once again Debney's talents at mutating temp scores such as Legends of the Fall and (especially) Black Beauty into a convincingly fresh idea must be commended. The only disappointment regarding the score for Dreamer is that the talents of Bell and Lang aren't utilized with enough emphasis (outside of obvious uses, such as the violin solos in the opening cue) to give these Debney themes an identity that would stand out after the film is over. This seems to be a characteristic inherent in horse racing film scores (from The Black Stallion to Seabiscuit in the modern age), and one thing Dreamer also reminds us of is just how funny, unique, and remarkable Mark Isham's score for Racing Stripes was earlier in the year. On album, Dreamer is a lengthy exercise in undemanding and pleasant listening, with the expected flourishes of hope and sustained action of the finale. Several alternate mixes (including one that proves that the violin solos in the opening cue were severely underplayed in the film) are concluded with one unfortunate pop song as a hidden track. Overall, Debney's work is a winner in its genre.

Dreamer really is a pleasant, enjoyable score to relax to on a sunny day, with flowing performances by soloists that provide just enough country atmosphere without irritating those of us who don't care much for that environment. The traditional orchestra is accompanied by acoustic guitars, dulcimer, mandola, and the more prominent solos by Joshua Bell on violin and Michael Lang on piano. There is definitely some James Horner sensibility to be heard with these solos, but Debney achieves that extra level of child-like exuberance through the rhythmically propulsive sections in which the full strings ramble over the acoustic guitars. The themes are a bit anonymous, but their harmony is never in question, and once again Debney's talents at mutating temp scores such as Legends of the Fall and (especially) Black Beauty into a convincingly fresh idea must be commended. The only disappointment regarding the score for Dreamer is that the talents of Bell and Lang aren't utilized with enough emphasis (outside of obvious uses, such as the violin solos in the opening cue) to give these Debney themes an identity that would stand out after the film is over. This seems to be a characteristic inherent in horse racing film scores (from The Black Stallion to Seabiscuit in the modern age), and one thing Dreamer also reminds us of is just how funny, unique, and remarkable Mark Isham's score for Racing Stripes was earlier in the year. On album, Dreamer is a lengthy exercise in undemanding and pleasant listening, with the expected flourishes of hope and sustained action of the finale. Several alternate mixes (including one that proves that the violin solos in the opening cue were severely underplayed in the film) are concluded with one unfortunate pop song as a hidden track. Overall, Debney's work is a winner in its genre.

Personal Project - Old Man
This was a personal project of mine, I wanted to create a more realistic model and develop my skills in ZBrush. The model was completely created and rendered in ZBrush.
Personal Project - Batmobile
This was another personal project of mine, I wanted to create a replica of a real life object and decided on creating the Batmobile. It was modelled and textured in Maya.
Sony Masterclass – Character design
This project was set at Bournemouth University by Sony, the aim was to create a monster based on real life animals. I had a 10,000 polygon limit and four 512x512 texture maps for Diffuse, Specular and Normal maps. I designed, modelled, textured and normal mapped the model. The base based was created in Maya and textured and normal mapped in Mudbox.
Major Project was an animation created by myself and Olly Fisk called Diva Dreams. For this project I was the Lead modeller.
Major Project - Bar Environment
The Bar environment is the first location of the animation and the type was a 50's/60's Jazz bar. All the environment and background characters were created myself. Everything was created in Maya.
Major Project - Bathroom Environment
The bathroom environment is the second location for the animation and was set in modern day. It was created in Maya.

The Diva character was the one of the main characters in the Animation. She is meant to be confidant, Sassy and a Diva. She was modelled in Maya.

The Dreamer character is the opposite to the Diva character, She is shy and a terrible singer. She was modelled in Maya.

This animation is the third scene from the Diva Dreams film.
Major Project - Bathroom
This animation is the final scene fromt he Diva Dreams film.
Animation Project
This animation is a third year project set at Bournemouth Uni, The project was to take a 10 second audio clip from a film and create my own interpretation of the performance.
Compositing
Major Project - Bathroom
The first clip shows final scene in the animation of the Dreamer character being caught in the bath. I modelled the character/environment, rendered and composited this scene.
Major Project - Bar
The second clip shows the third shot of the animation. It shows the Diva character singing to the audience. I modelled the character/environment, rendered and composited this scene.
CG Intergration
The third clip shows a second year compositing project. I only composited this clip.
Innovations Project
The final two clips shows two of the techniques I created for a stylised camouflage technique for animation. The first technique I used fake refractions in Nuke using a rendered normal pass from a displacement map of the Chameleon in Maya. The second technique was using image plane projection. Modelling
Personal Project - Old Man
This was a personal project of mine, I wanted to create a more realistic model and develop my skills in ZBrush. The model was completely created and rendered in ZBrush.
Personal Project - Batmobile
This was another personal project of mine, I wanted to create a replica of a real life object and decided on creating the Batmobile. It was modelled and textured in Maya.
Sony Masterclass – Character design
This project was set at Bournemouth University by Sony, the aim was to create a monster based on real life animals. I had a 10,000 polygon limit and four 512x512 texture maps for Diffuse, Specular and Normal maps. I designed, modelled, textured and normal mapped the model. The base based was created in Maya and textured and normal mapped in Mudbox.
Major Project was an animation created by myself and Olly Fisk called Diva Dreams. For this project I was the Lead modeller.
Major Project - Bar Environment
The Bar environment is the first location of the animation and the type was a 50's/60's Jazz bar. All the environment and background characters were created myself. Everything was created in Maya.
Major Project - Bathroom Environment
The bathroom environment is the second location for the animation and was set in modern day. It was created in Maya.
Major Project - Diva
The Diva character was the one of the main characters in the Animation. She is meant to be confidant, Sassy and a Diva. She was modelled in Maya.
Major Project - Dreamer
The Dreamer character is the opposite to the Diva character, She is shy and a terrible singer. She was modelled in Maya.
Animation
Major Project - Bar
This animation is the third scene from the Diva Dreams film.
Major Project - Bathroom
This animation is the final scene fromt he Diva Dreams film.
Animation Project
This animation is a third year project set at Bournemouth Uni, The project was to take a 10 second audio clip from a film and create my own interpretation of the performance.
Compositing
Major Project - Bathroom
The first clip shows final scene in the animation of the Dreamer character being caught in the bath. I modelled the character/environment, rendered and composited this scene.
Major Project - Bar
The second clip shows the third shot of the animation. It shows the Diva character singing to the audience. I modelled the character/environment, rendered and composited this scene.
CG Intergration
The third clip shows a second year compositing project. I only composited this clip.
Innovations Project
The final two clips shows two of the techniques I created for a stylised camouflage technique for animation. The first technique I used fake refractions in Nuke using a rendered normal pass from a displacement map of the Chameleon in Maya. The second technique was using image plane projection. Thank you to the town of Parker for allowing us to film at the Gazebo in O'Brien Park and also for allowing us to shut down Pikes Peak Drive for a half day in October! Thank you to the Weeder family for allowing us to film at your house in Allison's bedroom for the bedroom scene! ABOUT THE FILM
Nicola is a child living in a perfect city, with perfectly proper people living their perfectly ordered lives, rich in material wealth and with a full and satisfied sense of their own superiority. But Nicola isn't like the others. She is a dreamer, a compassionate soul - a child.
When the Strangers appear in the City's Park, living on the benches in their scruffy clothes with their dirty faces, the townsfolk are horrified. These savages, these creatures, so different to the townsfolk, must not be tolerated. The townsfolk resolve to remove them, but with every attempt, the Strangers return, every morning, to their places on the benches. So the townsfolk, not knowing what else to do, ignore them. Uniformly, across the board, they pay them no mind and pretend they're not there.
Except for Nicola.
Walking in the park one day, she notices the Strangers and through a simple act of kindness, learns their secret. And so the Strangers' legacy is passed to the next generation. To the ones who are destined to teach us by example the way forward to a joyous and peaceful future.
To the children.

The dreamer wanders through assorted portals, taking him through a diverse collection of urban environments. The visuals are very colorful, and the mood is surreal. The music is "Radiation Ruling the Nation" by Massive Attack (a remix of their song "Protection").
