(This was before the Kumamoto earthquake on April 16)
We took the shinkansen down to Kyushu to visit the small hot spring town Beppu, and then stay at a lovely ryokan in Yufuin.

Beppu:
First we took the Shinkansen (with our JR pass) from Shin-Osaka to Kokura, where we then took the Sonic Express to Beppu station. I think the whole trip took about 4 hours. We used this website to search for the best route: http://www.hyperdia.com/
Nishitetsu Resort Inn Beppu
We stayed at this hotel for 1 night, and we had a pleasant stay. It was quite close to the station and the beach (although it wasn’t beach season yet), and it also had a nice hot spring and good breakfast. The room was a bit small tho :’D

Aqua Garden at Suginoi Hotel
From Beppu station we took a free shuttle bus up to this hotel located on the hill, where you can look out over the city. They have a place called the Aqua Garden where you can wear swimsuits and bath together.

Toyotsune Honten
Right around the corner of our hotel we found this little place with lots of traditional japanese food. In the evening you can choose from different multi-course meals (kaiseki). Apparently they are famous for their tempura don, or tokujo tendon, but we decided to go for a Shiki Set and the Omakase Gozen (I think?? maybe we only had the “Mini Gozen”, I can’t remeber)

Yufuin:
The next day we took a train from Beppu station to Yufuin station, where we stayed at a wonderful ryokan nestled on top of a hill: Yufuin Sanso Waremokou. Ryokan are Japanese style inns found throughout the country, especially in hot spring resorts such as Beppu and Yufuin.
In our room we had two private open-air hot springs (onsen), and one bath inside as well. There was also a big open-air hot spring at the very top of the facility that you could book for private use. Needless to say we absolutely LOVED this place.
Apart from the amazing hot spring baths, dinner was definitely the highlight of our stay. Ryokan dinners usually mirror kaiseki ryori (懐石料理), which is a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner. They have different ingredients depending on the season, and for our stay we chose the Shabu-Shabu, a hotpot dish of thinly sliced meat and vegetables boiled in water.
The next day, around 8 in the morning, we had a wonderful Japanese style breakfast, with multiple dishes with local and seasonal specialties. I'm not a big fan of tofu but I was surprised how delicious it was. I think this is called hiyayakko (冷奴), chilled tofu with toppings.
Then it was time to leave, but we didn’t want to ;_; All of the staff were so friendly and they came out to wave to us when we left. I want to go back again already!

The typical eight hot spring-areas in the city are collectively called "Beppu Hatto". There are 11 classified types of hot spring waters in the world, and we have confirmed all but one in the city. You can enjoy a variety of hot springs, such as sand baths, mud baths and steam baths. A wide range of quality of the springs enables you to do a functional bathing. Also you can find a tasteful old atmosphere in some bathing facilities such as Takegawara Onsen.

構想実現にむけた取り組みの第一弾として、「湯～園地」計画公約ムービーを別府市内で開催中のイベントONSENアカデミアにて発表、同日Web上にて公開致しました。
本動画は、“遊べる温泉都市”構想のコンセプトそのままに、温泉と遊園地を融合させた湯量豊富なアミューズメント施設「湯～園地」を描いたものであり、本ムービにおけるYoutubeでの視聴回数が100万回を達成した場合には、実際に別府市内での「湯～園地」計画を実行するという、世界初の視聴回数連動型公約ムービーとなります。
Beppu City (Oita Prefecture, Japan) boasts the world’s highest yield of hot spring water in hot springs which people use. A decision was made to realize a new vision for the city, the “amusement onsen city initiative,” and to spread the word widely throughout the nation and the world.
As the first stage of the implementation plan, the Spamusement Park Project (spa + amusement = spamusement) public announcement video has been created for viewing at the hot spring event, Onsen Academia, in Beppu City and to release on the worldwide web on the same day.
The concept of this video is an “amusement onsen city,” bringing together the natural hot springs and an amusement park to form this “spamusement park.” What makes the concept so special is this: if this YouTube video reaches one million views, a plan to develop an onsen amusement park will be carried out, making this viewer-count & public video linkage the first of its kind in the world.

Beppu (別府市, Beppu-shi) is a city located in Ōita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan, at the west end of Beppu Bay. In November 2013 the city had a population of 122,085 and a population density of 976 persons per km² (2,530 persons per square mile). The total area is 125.13 km2 (48.31 sq mi). Beppu is famous for its hot springs.
Hot springs
Beppu is situated between the sea and the mountains. The city was founded on April 1, 1924, and is famous for its onsen (hot springs). It has eight major geothermal hot spots, sometimes referred to as the "eight hells of Beppu". Six of these are located in the Kannawa district, and two in the more remote Shibaseki district. Beppu is also divided into eight major hot spring areas known as Beppu Hattō (別府八湯).

April 11-13, 2016 (This was before the Kumamoto earthquake on April 16) We took the shinkansen down to Kyushu to visit the small hot spring town Beppu, and then stay at a lovely ryokan in Yufuin. —— Beppu: First we took the Shinkansen (with our JR pass) from Shin-Osaka to Kokura, where we then took the Sonic Express to Beppu station. I think the whole trip took about 4 hours. The typical eight hot spring-areas in the city are collectively called "Beppu Hatto". There are 11 classified types of hot spring waters in the world, and we have confirmed all but one in the city. You can enjoy a variety of hot springs, such as sand baths, mud baths and steam baths. A wide range of quality of the springs enables you to do a functional bathing. Also you can find a tasteful old atmosphere in some bathing facilities such as Takegawara Onsen.

Nishitetsu Resort Inn Beppu
We stayed at this hotel for 1 night, and we had a pleasant stay. It was quite close to the station and the beach (although it wasn’t beach season yet), and it also had a nice hot spring and good breakfast. The room was a bit small tho :’D

Aqua Garden at Suginoi Hotel
From Beppu station we took a free shuttle bus up to this hotel located on the hill, where you can look out over the city. They have a place called the Aqua Garden where you can wear swimsuits and bath together.

Toyotsune Honten
Right around the corner of our hotel we found this little place with lots of traditional japanese food. In the evening you can choose from different multi-course meals (kaiseki). Apparently they are famous for their tempura don, or tokujo tendon, but we decided to go for a Shiki Set and the Omakase Gozen (I think?? maybe we only had the “Mini Gozen”, I can’t remeber)

Yufuin:
The next day we took a train from Beppu station to Yufuin station, where we stayed at a wonderful ryokan nestled on top of a hill: Yufuin Sanso Waremokou. Ryokan are Japanese style inns found throughout the country, especially in hot spring resorts such as Beppu and Yufuin.
In our room we had two private open-air hot springs (onsen), and one bath inside as well. There was also a big open-air hot spring at the very top of the facility that you could book for private use. Needless to say we absolutely LOVED this place.
Apart from the amazing hot spring baths, dinner was definitely the highlight of our stay. Ryokan dinners usually mirror kaiseki ryori (懐石料理), which is a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner. They have different ingredients depending on the season, and for our stay we chose the Shabu-Shabu, a hotpot dish of thinly sliced meat and vegetables boiled in water.
The next day, around 8 in the morning, we had a wonderful Japanese style breakfast, with multiple dishes with local and seasonal specialties. I'm not a big fan of tofu but I was surprised how delicious it was. I think this is called hiyayakko (冷奴), chilled tofu with toppings.
Then it was time to leave, but we didn’t want to ;_; All of the staff were so friendly and they came out to wave to us when we left. I want to go back again already!

Here's day 1 from our weekend trip to Beppu, Oita. It's not very exciting as we arrived in the afternoon and when we went to meet our friends, we had a tough time trying to find somewhere to eat that wasn't full! Anywho, hope you find it interesting and I definitely recommend visiting Beppu. Such a beautiful place!

Visitors can experience eight different springs here: Beppu, Kannawa, Myoban, Kankaiji, Hamawaki, Kamegawa, Horita and Shibaseki.
