Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (or the Gates Foundation, abbreviated as BMGF) is the largest private foundation in the world, founded by Bill and Melinda Gates. It was launched in 2000 and is said to be the largest transparently operated private foundation in the world. The primary aims of the foundation are, globally, to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty, and in America, to expand educational opportunities and access to information technology. The foundation, based in Seattle, Washington, is controlled by its three trustees: Bill Gates, Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett. Other principal officers include Co-Chair William H. Gates, Sr. and Chief Executive Officer Susan Desmond-Hellmann.
It had an endowment of US$44.3 billion as of 31 December 2014. The scale of the foundation and the way it seeks to apply business techniques to giving makes it one of the leaders in venture philanthropy, though the foundation itself notes that the philanthropic role has limitations. In 2007, its founders were ranked as the second most generous philanthropists in America, and Warren Buffett the first. As of May 16, 2013, Bill Gates had donated US$28 billion to the foundation.
Melinda Ann Gates (née French; born August 15, 1964) is an American businesswoman and philanthropist.
She is the wife of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, and the co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She worked at Microsoft, where she was project manager for Microsoft Bob, Microsoft Encarta and Expedia.
Melinda Ann French was born on August 15, 1964 in Dallas, Texas. She is the second of four children to Raymond Joseph French Jr., an aerospace engineer, and Elaine Agnes Amerland, a homemaker. French has an older sister and two younger brothers.
French, a Roman Catholic, attended St. Monica Catholic School, where she was the top student in her class year. French graduated as valedictorian from Ursuline Academy of Dallas in 1982. She earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and economics from Duke University in 1986 and an MBA from Duke's Fuqua School of Business in 1987. At Duke, French was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Beta Rho Chapter.
William Henry "Bill" Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American business magnate, philanthropist, investor, and computer programmer. In 1975, Gates and Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft, which became the world's largest PC software company. During his career at Microsoft, Gates held the positions of chairman, CEO and chief software architect, and was the largest individual shareholder until May 2014. Gates has authored and co-authored several books.
Starting in 1987, Gates was included in the Forbes list of the world's wealthiest people and was the wealthiest from 1995 to 2007, again in 2009, and has been since 2014. Between 2009 and 2014, his wealth doubled from US$40 billion to more than US$82 billion. Between 2013 and 2014, his wealth increased by US$15 billion. Gates is currently the richest person in the world.
Gates is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. Gates has been criticized for his business tactics, which have been considered anti-competitive, an opinion which has in some cases been upheld by numerous court rulings. Later in his career Gates pursued a number of philanthropic endeavors, donating large amounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, established in 2000.

A pressure group study also accuses the $50bn Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation of exploiting its leverage on the African continent. The Global Justice group says that under the pretext of financing poor farmers, they are instead becoming trapped into debt by having to use chemicals and fertilisers that are underwritten by offshoots of the Gates Foundation. Private financiers linked to the foundation have demanded repayments that caused one African country, Lesotho, more than half of its entire health budget, the group alleged. Aid experts warn that the focus on high-profile, headline-grabbing diseases undermines wider attempts by African governments to reduce the poverty that causes them. Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports. Bill Gates has partnered with a perfume company in Switzerland in an effort to find a way to get rid of the repulsive smell of toilets. The project is aimed at encouraging people in the developing world to use toilets rather than defecate in open areas. Scientists at Firmenich, a 120-year-old fragrance company, discovered that bad toilet odors are primarily made up of four chemical compounds: indole, butyric acid, p-cresol and dimethyl tri-sulfide. According to Bill Gates’ blog, Gates Notes, scientists recreated toilet smells using these chemical compounds and tested out which olfactory receptors typically respond to the bad odors. The team then developed a fragrance that can block these receptors. As a result, the bad odor molecules would not be able to bind to the blocked receptors, an...
