Berkeley may refer to:
The University of California, Berkeley (also referred to as Berkeley, UC Berkeley, California or simply Cal) is a public research university located in Berkeley, California. It is the flagship campus of the University of California system, one of three parts in the state's public higher education plan, which also includes the California State University system and the California Community Colleges System.
It is considered by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings as one of six university brands that lead in world reputation rankings in 2015 and is ranked third on the U.S. News' 2015 Best Global Universities rankings conducted in the U.S. and nearly 50 other countries. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) also ranks the University of California, Berkeley fourth in the world overall, and first among public universities. It is broadly ranked first in science, third in engineering, and fifth in social sciences, with specific rankings of first in chemistry, first in physics, third in computer science, fourth in mathematics, and fourth in economics/business. The university is also well known for producing a high number of entrepreneurs.
Dance is a performance art form consisting of purposefully selected sequences of human movement. This movement has aesthetic and symbolic value, and is acknowledged as dance by performers and observers within a particular culture. Dance can be categorized and described by its choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its historical period or place of origin.
An important distinction is to be drawn between the contexts of theatrical and participatory dance, although these two categories are not always completely separate; both may have special functions, whether social, ceremonial, competitive, erotic, martial, or sacred/liturgical. Others disciplines of human movement are sometimes said to have a dance-like quality, including martial arts, gymnastics, figure skating, synchronized swimming and many other forms of athletics.
Theatrical dance, also called performance or concert dance, is intended primarily as a spectacle, usually a performance upon a stage by virtuoso dancers. It often tells a story, perhaps using mime, costume and scenery, or else it may simply interpret the musical accompaniment, which is often specially composed. Examples are western ballet and modern dance, Classical Indian dance and Chinese and Japanese song and dance dramas. Most classical forms are centred upon dance alone, but performance dance may also appear in opera and other forms of musical theatre.
Berkeley (/ˈbɜːrkliː/ BURK-lee) is a city on the east shore of San Francisco Bay in northern Alameda County, California. It is named after the 18th-century Anglo-Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley. It borders the cities of Oakland and Emeryville to the south and the city of Albany and unincorporated community of Kensington to the north. Its eastern border with Contra Costa County generally follows the ridge of the Berkeley Hills. Its population at the 2010 census was 112,580.
Berkeley is the site of the oldest campus in the University of California system – the University of California, Berkeley – of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory which is managed and operated by the university, and the Graduate Theological Union. It is one of the most politically liberal cities in the United States.
The site of today's City of Berkeley was the territory of the Chochenyo/Huchiun band of the Ohlone people when the first Europeans arrived. Evidence of their existence in the area include pits in rock formations, which they used to grind acorns, and a shellmound, now mostly leveled and covered up, along the shoreline of San Francisco Bay at the mouth of Strawberry Creek. Other artifacts were discovered in the 1950s in the downtown area during remodeling of a commercial building, near the upper course of the creek.
Busby Berkeley (November 29, 1895 – March 14, 1976), born Berkeley William Enos, was a Hollywood movie director and musical choreographer.
Berkeley devised elaborate musical production numbers that often involved complex geometric patterns. Berkeley's works used large numbers of showgirls and props as fantasy elements in kaleidoscopic on-screen performances.
Berkeley was born to stage actress Gertrude Berkeley. Among Gertrude's friends, and a performer in Tim Frawly's Stock company run by Busby Berkeley's father Francis Enos (who died when Busby was eight), were actress Amy Busby from which Berkeley gained the appellation "Buzz" or Busby" and actor William Gillette, then only four years away from playing Sherlock Holmes. Whether he was actually christened Busby Berkeley William Enos, or Berkeley William Enos, with "Busby" being a nickname, is a not unanimous – the "Child's names" entry on his birth certificate is blank.
In addition to her stage work, Gertrude played mother roles in silent films while Berkeley was still a child. Berkeley made his stage début at five, acting in the company of his performing family. During World War I, Berkeley served as a field artillery lieutenant. Watching soldiers drill may have inspired his later complex choreography. During the 1920s, Berkeley was a dance director for nearly two dozen Broadway musicals, including such hits as A Connecticut Yankee. As a choreographer, Berkeley was less concerned with the terpsichorean skill of his chorus girls as he was with their ability to form themselves into attractive geometric patterns. His musical numbers were among the largest and best-regimented on Broadway.

Here's another favorite, the massive tap sequence from the 13 1/2 minute production number "Lullaby of Broadway" from "Gold Diggers of 1935." Dance Director/Choreographer Busby Berkeley outdid himself with this number. It told the story of a night in the life of a "Broadway Baby" following her from the time she goes to bed (early in the morning) to her sleeping all day, then going out of the town that night. It's an early attempt at what the MGM Musicals would perfect over 10 years later: the "ballet" section of a film that told a story in song and dance, heavy on the dance. This number is as good as the best of the MGM "production numbers to end all production numbers." The set is amazingly huge, and all those dancers in sync! This one has a sad ending, but I won't give it awa...
Scenes of the amazing Busby Berkeley's choreography including "Shanghai Lil" and "By a Waterfall" from FOOTLIGHT PARADE (featuring James Cagney and Ruby Keeler), "Spin a Little Web of Dreams" from FASHIONS OF 1934, and "The Worry Bird" from TWO TICKETS TO BROADWAY (featuring Ann Miller). Enjoy :) I own nothing.

Recorded July 24, 2003. Frank Moore with Kirsten Rose and Linda Mac.
This is another rehearsal mid- week between the weekends of the play. I was still trying to figure out why the performances before audiences frankly sucked and had little erotic juice when the rehearsals were about the most warmly erotic thing I had ever done. After the run was over, Bonnie finally admitted she didn't think people could handle it full strength, so she kept watering it down for the audience! I NEVER WATER ANYTHING DOWN! Recorded October 23, 1984 From the poster: The A.S.U.C. Presents = Recycled Dreams The second year of the performance series by Frank Moore 1984 Every other Tuesday, from 7 to 9 p.m., Mr. Moore turns a classroom (125 Dwinelle) on the U.C. Berkeley campus into a bubble of reality in which even grown-ups can let go of their silly limits and play like kids. This magic is called forth by combining Mr. Moore’s live performance and video art with the sound/music of Steiv Dixon and the works of other actors, designers, and dancers. Come to the party and get dressed up in designer’s originals which you keep! Plus be in a film.
Recorded at 848 Community Space, June 24, 2000 to celebrate the opening of Tasmanian photographer Tony Ryan's show. This is when I performed with my CHEROTIC ALL-STAR BAND at the opening of the first U.S. exhibition of the work of the Tasmania's erotic photographer Tony Ryan. It broke out in the second half of the performance into a very juicy erotic dance which pulled in several audience members! When I reviewed Tony Ryan's first book of photography, “Beauty/Reality” for the 7th issue of my zine, The Cherotic (r)Evolutionary, we had not met in person. I met Tony on the Internet. I was searching for erotic art that wasn't legs-spread, beer- can- in- the- ass- dildo- in- cunt- sucking- cock parody on sex (such parodies have their place, but ...). And that is where the world al...
ICONIC - AMDA's Fall Dance Concert of 2015 - was a modern celebration of 20th Century dance on film reimagined through live performance. Immersed in the rich history of dance from the 1920's to now, AMDA students trained rigorously with some of the most innovative artists of the era, including original choreographers and dancers from CHICAGO to DIRTY DANCING and Janet Jackson's IF. Students recreated cinema's most cherished dance moments as ICONIC intertwined screen and stage in homage to some of the greatest dancers of all time: from Fred Astaire to the sultry burlesque of the "Cell Block Tango" to the pop grooves of Michael Jackson. Surprisingly modern, ICONIC transposed the dances that dominated our screens to the visceral world of live theatre, paying tribute to the films that still...
I consider this representative or symbolic erotic rather than actual erotic. It is hard to generate actual erotic aroused energy in a live performance which is shorter than thirty minutes. And of course I always prefer actual erotic aroused energy! Actually this was so erotic that it got me booked at the Harbin Hot Springs. Actually this video was so erotic that it freaked out the Harbin Powers that be when the guy who booked me showed them this video! They told him it was inappropriate, too erotic, that I could just read my poems... No nudity or erotic dancing! So I picked poems about censorship. But when we got to Harbin, there were nude bodies everywhere... And a lot of them were fucking in the bushes! It became obvious the problem wasn't nudity or eroticism, but my nude ero...
Well, this is really playing with reality. Up to this point we hadn't filmed what happened in THE CAVE because the blindfolded audience members did vulnerable intimate acts while in the cave. But this time we were doing the whole performance for a Los Angeles film crew. And "the audience" were really actors! But the film crew didn't show up! So we shot this ourselves. The first part is in the lobby full of straight actors there for a casting call /audition. I gave each a character to play [I do believe in type casting] and gave them general directions. Then I disappeared into the performance space. The nude dancers then blindfolded each actor and led each into the performance space. The question: did they transform from actors to an actual audience?
We never know what we will see when we first get these old tapes back from John our transfer God! What we labelled on the box over thirty years ago was PROCESS. But it turned out that this is a glimpse into the WORKSHOP I did for six years in the seventies. This is the only piece of the workshop we have! I often have said my best, most dangerous work was in the workshop and the processes. Everything came out of the workshop! But I will let you figure out what the fuck is going on! Why is that guy digging an imaginary hole when the two hot babes are taking each other's clothes off and...?
