While there is value to graduate writing degrees, so many of the young writers encouraged by their MFA professors aren't going to make it. This leaves Shriver uneasy.
Question: What do you think of MFA programs?Lionel Shriver: I'm very torn about them. I have to confess, I did get an MFA from Columbia University. And I can't say that I regret it exactly. I didn't have a bad time, I had some interesting teachers; I'm still in touch with one of them. And we've become friends. I am still friends with some of the students that I met at Columbia. My very best friend I met at Columbia. So it's a little mystifying why my immediate impulse is to diss MFA programs. But I sometimes feel in retrospect that I should have gotten a proper education in something like history, something substantive. If I'm going to be honest, what I really needed in my early 20s wasn't audience; I wasn't developed enough as a writer to be publishing. So I couldn't achieve that audience through getting short stories in The New Yorker. Frankly at this point in time, I'm still not getting short stories in The New Yorker. But I'm working on it. So it is not a dumb thing for me to do. And therefore I can't really tell other people who were in a similar situation and have a similar need to have people read their work that they shouldn't do it. But it does have a kind of indulgent, middle-class gestalt. The grim truth is that most people who get MFAs will not go on to be professional writers and therefore when I've been on the other side of it and occasionally taught creative writing, I felt a little bit guilty because so many of the people that you should be encouraging, because there's no point to it if you're not encouraging, are not going to make it. And I think that's true across the board in the arts. My husband is a jazz drummer and he has the same sense of queasiness about teaching jazz drumming. There's more of a career in teaching jazz than there is in playing it right now, and so at the very best, most of the students are going to go on to become jazz instructors. So there's something a little corrupt in that, something unwholesome. And I share his discomfort in participating in it. Recorded on March 12, 2010

And I
"And I" is a song written by American R&B singer Ciara, and produced by Adonis Shropshire for Ciara's first album, Goodies (2004). It was released as the album's fourth and final single on August 30, 2005 (see 2005 in music) in North America.
The song was originally the third choice for the fourth single. Ciara has mentioned in an interview that "Thug Style", "Hotline" or "Pick up the Phone" would be the fourth single, but when Ciara suggested "And I" to executives at her previous record label LaFace, they were unhappy because they wanted "Next to You" to be the fourth single.
Chart performance
At the time of the U.S. release of "And I", Ciara's collaboration with Bow Wow, "Like You", and her collaboration with Missy Elliott, "Lose Control", were at the height of their popularity. "And I" peaked at 96 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and 27 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, which were poor positions compared to those attained by the first three singles from the album Goodies. It was not released outside North America because of this, and it is Ciara's least successful single.

The New Yorker
The New Yorker is an American magazine of reportage, commentary, criticism, essays, fiction, satire, cartoons, and poetry. It is published by Condé Nast. Started as a weekly in 1925, the magazine is now published 47 times annually, with five of these issues covering two-week spans.
Although its reviews and events listings often focus on the cultural life of New York City, The New Yorker has a wide audience outside of New York. It is well known for its illustrated and often topical covers, its commentaries on popular culture and eccentric Americana, its attention to modern fiction by the inclusion of short stories and literary reviews, its rigorous fact checking and copyediting, its journalism on politics and social issues, and its single-panel cartoons sprinkled throughout each issue.
History
The New Yorker debuted on February 21, 1925. It was founded by Harold Ross and his wife, Jane Grant, a New York Times reporter. Ross wanted to create a sophisticated humor magazine that would be different from perceivably "corny" humor publications such as Judge, where he had worked, or Life. Ross partnered with entrepreneur Raoul H. Fleischmann (who founded the General Baking Company) to establish the F-R Publishing Company and established the magazine's first offices at 25 West 45th Street in Manhattan. Ross edited the magazine until his death in 1951. During the early, occasionally precarious years of its existence, the magazine prided itself on its cosmopolitan sophistication. Ross famously declared in a 1925 prospectus for the magazine: "It has announced that it is not edited for the old lady in Dubuque."

Turn on the Bright Lights
Turn On the Bright Lights is the debut studio album by the American rock band Interpol, released in August 2002. The album was recorded in November 2001 at Tarquin Studios in Connecticut, and was co-produced, mixed and engineered by Peter Katis and Gareth Jones. It was released on August 19, 2002 in the United Kingdom and August 20 in the United States, through independent record label Matador Records. Upon release, the record peaked at number 101 on the UK Albums Chart. It reached number 158 on the Billboard 200 in the United States, as well as spending 73 weeks in the Billboard Independent Albums, peaking at number five.
"PDA", "NYC", "Obstacle 1" and "Say Hello to the Angels" were the singles from Turn On the Bright Lights, and a video was shot for each with the exception of "Say Hello to the Angels".
The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on August 29, 2011 for shipments of 500,000 copies.
A remastered version of the album was released in 2012 to commemorate its tenth anniversary. It featured additional material including demo recordings of several tracks, the bonus songs previously available on international releases and a DVD of live performances and music videos.

While there is value to graduate writing degrees, so many of the young writers encouraged by their MFA professors aren't going to make it. This leaves Shriver uneasy. Question: What do you think of MFA programs?Lionel Shriver: I'm very torn about them. I have to confess, I did get an MFA from Columbia University. And I can't say that I regret it exactly. While there is value to graduate writing degrees, so many of the young writers encouraged by their MFA professors aren't going to make it. This leaves Shriver uneasy.
Question: What do you think of MFA programs?Lionel Shriver: I'm very torn about them. I have to confess, I did get an MFA from Columbia University. And I can't say that I regret it exactly. I didn't have a bad time, I had some interesting teachers; I'm still in touch with one of them. And we've become friends. I am still friends with some of the students that I met at Columbia. My very best friend I met at Columbia. So it's a little mystifying why my immediate impulse is to diss MFA programs. But I sometimes feel in retrospect that I should have gotten a proper education in something like history, something substantive. If I'm going to be honest, what I really needed in my early 20s wasn't audience; I wasn't developed enough as a writer to be publishing. So I couldn't achieve that audience through getting short stories in The New Yorker. Frankly at this point in time, I'm still not getting short stories in The New Yorker. But I'm working on it. So it is not a dumb thing for me to do. And therefore I can't really tell other people who were in a similar situation and have a similar need to have people read their work that they shouldn't do it. But it does have a kind of indulgent, middle-class gestalt. The grim truth is that most people who get MFAs will not go on to be professional writers and therefore when I've been on the other side of it and occasionally taught creative writing, I felt a little bit guilty because so many of the people that you should be encouraging, because there's no point to it if you're not encouraging, are not going to make it. And I think that's true across the board in the arts. My husband is a jazz drummer and he has the same sense of queasiness about teaching jazz drumming. There's more of a career in teaching jazz than there is in playing it right now, and so at the very best, most of the students are going to go on to become jazz instructors. So there's something a little corrupt in that, something unwholesome. And I share his discomfort in participating in it. Recorded on March 12, 2010
