Pour en finir avec le jugement de dieu, est une création radiophonique d'Antonin Artaud, enregistrée dans les studios de la radio française entre le 22 et 29 novembre 1947. Ce texte radiophonique, une commande de l'ORTF, fut censuré la veille de sa première diffusion, et il fallut attendre 20 ans pour qu'il passe sur les ondes. C'est toute la puissance subversive d'Artaud qui y parle, qui crie, qui hurle : poésie de la cruauté, éructation verbale dénonçant avec une vigueur effrayante tout ordre moral, religieux, détruisant tous les tabous. Les textes d'Artaud lus par Maria Casarès, Roger Blin, Paule Thévenin et l'auteur, ponctués de cris, de battements de tambour et de xylophone, enregistrés par Artaud lui-même, demeurent comme un moment de radio exceptionnel en même temps que l'affirmation d' "une certaine idée de l'honneur humain", qu'Artaud n'a jamais cessé de clamer, sans aucune concession et sans d'autre alternative que de "mourir à la société".

Cultural theorist Sylvère Lotringer will speak on Antonin Artaud, one of the most influential thinkers of the modernist period. He will discuss his forthcoming book, Mad Like Artaud, and will screen a selection from his new film project, The Man Who Disappeared.
As Lotringer describes, “Actor, dramaturge, poet, art critic, playwright and theorist, Antonin Artaud suffered early on from intense mental and physical dissociations. Arriving in Paris in 1922, he complained that something was destroying his thoughts and robbing him of the words that he had found. And yet these acute mental symptoms, which he controlled as best he could by using opiates, opened up the possibility of investigating ‘all the names of history’ (Nietzsche), ‘performing’ their works and predicament as if they were his own. In that way he managed to become, among others, Paolo Uccello, Pierre Abelard, Heliogabalus, Gérard de Nerval, Baudelaire, Edgar Allen Poe, and Vincent Van Gogh. And these names in turn became his own doubles. The black hole of his identity, from which he suffered so much—Susan Sontag said that Artaud offered the greatest quantity of suffering in the history of literature—also became an irresistible invitation for his readers to become Artaud clones.”

About the Speaker
Sylvère Lotringer, a literary critic and cultural theorist, is professor emeritus of French literature and philosophy at Columbia University and Jean Baudrillard Chair at the European Graduate School. As the founder of the independent press Semiotext(e), he was instrumental in introducing French theory to the United States. Lotringer’s contributions range from philosophy, literature, and art to architecture, anthropology, and avant-garde movements. His publications include Antonin Artaud (Scribners & Sons, 1990), Nancy Spero (Phaidon Press, 1996); French Theory in America (Routledge, 2001); The Miserables (Semiotext(e), 2014); and Mad Like Artaud (Univocal, 2015), among many others. He has made three films: How to Shoot a Crime, with Chris Kraus (1985); Violent Femmes (1999), and The Man Who Disappeared (2015).

The painter as performer, as magician, as shaman, as athlete. In WAX LATEX MUD Jager explored the complex relationship between the viewer and the work of art by putting his performance-body at the service of painting, where painting becomes both revelation and sacrificial action. The body in question is the Anonymous Body (AB) that lies beneath the social and autobiographical detail that constitutes Dirk Jan Jager from the Low Countries. The AB is the Homo-Universalis, the unit of one body, the measure of man. The AB is always present, but unrecognized until forced with violence or despair to appear: Marsyas flayed by Apollo, maddened Orestes, and Nan Goldin's drug-addled drag queens of New York. It is the AB that is addressed by both George Bataille and Antonin Artaud, "Joy before death" and the "Body without organs." It is always at the edge of the void that we find the AB. Speechless, but always aware, always in focus, always prepared.

Antonin Artaud
Antoine Marie Joseph Artaud, better known as Antonine Artaud (French: [aʁto]; 4 September 1896 – 4 March 1948), was a French dramatist, poet, essayist, actor, and theatre director, widely recognized as one of the major figures of twentieth-century theatre and the European avant-garde.
Early life
Antoine Artaud was born 4 September 1896 in Marseille, France, to Euphrasie Nalpas and Antoine-Roi Artaud. Both his parents were natives of Smyrna (modern-day İzmir), and he was greatly affected by his Greek ancestry. His mother gave birth to nine children, but only Antonin and two siblings survived infancy. When he was four years old, Artaud had a severe case of meningitis, which gave him a nervous, irritable temperament throughout his adolescence. He also suffered from neuralgia, stammering, and severe bouts of clinical depression.
Artaud's parents arranged a long series of sanatorium stays for their temperamental son, which were both prolonged and expensive. This lasted five years, with a break of two months in June and July 1916, when Artaud was conscripted into the French Army. He was allegedly discharged due to his self-induced habit of sleepwalking. During Artaud's "rest cures" at the sanatorium, he read Arthur Rimbaud, Charles Baudelaire, and Edgar Allan Poe. In May 1919, the director of the sanatorium prescribed laudanum for Artaud, precipitating a lifelong addiction to that and other opiates.

Lotringer’s contributions range from philosophy, literature, and art to architecture, anthropology, and avant-garde movements. His publications include Antonin Artaud (Scribners & Sons, 1990), Nancy Spero (Phaidon Press, 1996); French Theory in America (Routledge, 2001); The Miserables (Semiotext(e), 2014); and Mad Like Artaud (Univocal, 2015), among many others. He has made three films: How to Shoot a Crime, with Chris Kraus (1985); Violent Femmes (1999), and The Man Who Disappeared (2015).

The painter as performer, as magician, as shaman, as athlete. In WAX LATEX MUD Jager explored the complex relationship between the viewer and the work of art by putting his performance-body at the service of painting, where painting becomes both revelation and sacrificial action. The body in question is the Anonymous Body (AB) that lies beneath the social and autobiographical detail that constitutes Dirk Jan Jager from the Low Countries. The AB is the Homo-Universalis, the unit of one body, the measure of man. The AB is always present, but unrecognized until forced with violence or despair to appear: Marsyas flayed by Apollo, maddened Orestes, and Nan Goldin's drug-addled drag queens of New York. It is the AB that is addressed by both George Bataille and Antonin Artaud, "Joy before death" and the "Body without organs." It is always at the edge of the void that we find the AB. Speechless, but always aware, always in focus, always prepared.

SINOPSYS
Metachaos, from Greek Meta (beyond) and Chaos (the abyss where the eternally-formless state of the universe hides), indicates a primordial shape of ameba, which lacks in precise morphology, and it is characterized by mutation and mitosis.
In fact the bodies represented in METACHAOS, even though they are characterized by an apparently anthropomorphous appearance, in reality they are without identity and conscience. They exist confined in a spaceless and timeless state, an hostile and decadent hyperuranium where a fortress, in perpetual movement, dominates the landscape in defense of a supercelestial, harmonic but fragile parallel dimension. In its destructive instinct of violating the dimensional limbo, the mutant horde penetrates the intimacy of the fortress, laying siege like a virus. Similar to the balance of a philological continuum in human species, bringing the status of things back to the primordial broth.
STATEMENT
METACHAOS is a multidisciplinary audio-visual project, articulated in a short film, a set of photography (http://www.alessandrobavari.com/english/Metachaos-photographies/gallery_Metachaos-photographic_series.htm) and mix-technique paintings. The purpose of the project is to represent the most tragic aspects of the human nature and of its motion, such as war, madness, social change and hate. An accretion of feelings that are metaphorically represented by specific visual forms, which are abstract conceptually, but concrete and tangible formally. The application of acid and monochromatic tints, besides the strong contrasts, makes everything intentionally more oppressive and tragic.
In order to obtain a more immersive and plausible version, the shot was taken adopting the camera live technique. The extreme and frenetic motion of the shoulder camera, similar to the subjective one, becomes a main constant, so that, along with the persisting cuts used to edit the video, create a bigger sense of instability and danger. In fact, thanks to the dissemination of Technology, it is possible to notice that the unconscious-esthetic potential of the shots available on Youtube, characterized by a pseudo-documentary and amateur approach, often offer an unexpected emotional involvement, which trigger an exhibitionistic-voyeuristic interchange between the author and the consumer.
The irrational gesture and action of the bodies, as if a collective form of madness controlled them, are inspired by artists like Bosch and Bruegel who, between the ‘400 and ‘500, produced an iconography where irrational images show sickly madness and pain.
The project has been realized using different techniques: live shots taken in discharged industrial sites, CGI animations, tracking and motion captures, besides various other analogical ones.
American Jeff Ensign, aka Evolution Noise Slave composed the original sound track, which has been progressively updated during the video production. The musical score was inspired by 6 separate pieces Jeff had previously created that were then combined into a hybrid. The composition was also based in part from a sonic interpretation of the ideas presented in Antonin Artaud’s the Theater and Cruelty overlaid on Bavari’s images.

The 8-minute clip begins with a sequence of clear, geometric forms that suggest a serene world. But it doesn’t take long until it’s apparent that this was just the calm before the storm. Shadowy creatures and shockingly grotesque figures intrude into this domain rendered in black & white and sepia tones and rip it to pieces. Using the interplay of light and shadow, intentionally shaky camera movements and quick cuts, Bavari takes us on a tour de force through an unsettling imaginary cosmos that grips viewers and doesn’t let them loose. Le navire, c'est l'hétérotopie par excellence. Dans les civilisations sans bateaux les rêves se tarissent, l'espionnage y remplace l'aventure, et la police, les corsaires.
El barco es un pedazo flotante de espacio, un lugar sin lugar, que vive por él mismo, que está cerrado sobre sí y que al mismo tiempo está librado al infinito del mar y que, de puerto en puerto, de orilla en orilla, de casa de tolerancia en casa de tolerancia, va hasta las colonias a buscar lo más precioso que ellas encierran en sus jardines.

Arriving in Paris in 1922, he complained that something was destroying his thoughts and robbing him of the words that he had found. And yet these acute mental symptoms, which he controlled as best he could by using opiates, opened up the possibility of investigating ‘all the names of history’ (Nietzsche), ‘performing’ their works and predicament as if they were his own. In that way he managed to become, among others, Paolo Uccello, Pierre Abelard, Heliogabalus, Gérard de Nerval, Baudelaire, Edgar Allen Poe, and Vincent Van Gogh. And these names in turn became his own doubles. The black hole of his identity, from which he suffered so much—Susan Sontag said that Artaud offered the greatest quantity of suffering in the history of literature—also became an irresistible invitation for his readers to become Artaud clones.”

As the founder of the independent press Semiotext(e), he was instrumental in introducing French theory to the United States. Lotringer’s contributions range from philosophy, literature, and art to architecture, anthropology, and avant-garde movements. His publications include Antonin Artaud (Scribners & Sons, 1990), Nancy Spero (Phaidon Press, 1996); French Theory in America (Routledge, 2001); The Miserables (Semiotext(e), 2014); and Mad Like Artaud (Univocal, 2015), among many others. He has made three films: How to Shoot a Crime, with Chris Kraus (1985); Violent Femmes (1999), and The Man Who Disappeared (2015).

SINOPSYS
Metachaos, from Greek Meta (beyond) and Chaos (the abyss where the eternally-formless state of the universe hides), indicates a primordial shape of ameba, which lacks in precise morphology, and it is characterized by mutation and mitosis.
In fact the bodies represented in METACHAOS, even though they are characterized by an apparently anthropomorphous appearance, in reality they are without identity and conscience. They exist confined in a spaceless and timeless state, an hostile and decadent hyperuranium where a fortress, in perpetual movement, dominates the landscape in defense of a supercelestial, harmonic but fragile parallel dimension. In its destructive instinct of violating the dimensional limbo, the mutant horde penetrates the intimacy of the fortress, laying siege like a virus. Similar to the balance of a philological continuum in human species, bringing the status of things back to the primordial broth.
STATEMENT
METACHAOS is a multidisciplinary audio-visual project, articulated in a short film, a set of photography (http://www.alessandrobavari.com/english/Metachaos-photographies/gallery_Metachaos-photographic_series.htm) and mix-technique paintings. The purpose of the project is to represent the most tragic aspects of the human nature and of its motion, such as war, madness, social change and hate. An accretion of feelings that are metaphorically represented by specific visual forms, which are abstract conceptually, but concrete and tangible formally. The application of acid and monochromatic tints, besides the strong contrasts, makes everything intentionally more oppressive and tragic.
In order to obtain a more immersive and plausible version, the shot was taken adopting the camera live technique. The extreme and frenetic motion of the shoulder camera, similar to the subjective one, becomes a main constant, so that, along with the persisting cuts used to edit the video, create a bigger sense of instability and danger. In fact, thanks to the dissemination of Technology, it is possible to notice that the unconscious-esthetic potential of the shots available on Youtube, characterized by a pseudo-documentary and amateur approach, often offer an unexpected emotional involvement, which trigger an exhibitionistic-voyeuristic interchange between the author and the consumer.
The irrational gesture and action of the bodies, as if a collective form of madness controlled them, are inspired by artists like Bosch and Bruegel who, between the ‘400 and ‘500, produced an iconography where irrational images show sickly madness and pain.
The project has been realized using different techniques: live shots taken in discharged industrial sites, CGI animations, tracking and motion captures, besides various other analogical ones.
American Jeff Ensign, aka Evolution Noise Slave composed the original sound track, which has been progressively updated during the video production. The musical score was inspired by 6 separate pieces Jeff had previously created that were then combined into a hybrid. The composition was also based in part from a sonic interpretation of the ideas presented in Antonin Artaud’s the Theater and Cruelty overlaid on Bavari’s images.

Alessandro Bavari’s “Metachaos” is an impressive display of the amazing graphics that can be produced with leading-edge hardware and software. The 8-minute clip begins with a sequence of clear, geometric forms that suggest a serene world. But it doesn’t take long until it’s apparent that this was just the calm before the storm. Shadowy creatures and shockingly grotesque figures intrude into this domain rendered in black & white and sepia tones and rip it to pieces. Using the interplay of light and shadow, intentionally shaky camera movements and quick cuts, Bavari takes us on a tour de force through an unsettling imaginary cosmos that grips viewers and doesn’t let them loose. Antonin Artaud, connu notamment pour l'Ombilic des Limbes et Le Théâtre et son double, rend hommage en 1947 à Van gogh dans : Van Gogh le suicidé de la société.
Il est sorti depuis peu d'hôpital psychiatrique - où il n'a cessé d'écrire... contrairement aux premiers diagnostiques des médecins, qui avaient prédit la cessation définitive de son activité littéraire. Il se rend à une exposition sur Van Gogh et la traverse rapidement, du témoignage d'une de ses amis. Arrivé chez lui, il rédige un texte profond sur la peinture de Van Gogh et le sort des génies créateurs, peintres, poètes, philosophes, déclarés fous et suicidés, selon lui, non par eux-mêmes mais par la société.
En 1948 il décède des suites de la consommation excessive de laudanum.
L'enregistrement contient une lecture de Van Gogh le suicidé de la société, par Alain Cuny, précédé d'Aliénation et Magie noire, lu par Artaud lui-même à l'occasion d'un enregistrement radiophonique.

This video features two films from the Five Truths installation that focus on an Antonin Artaud influenced approach to the character of Ophelia.
What are the differences between five of the most influential European theatre practitioners of the 20th century? How would these five directors work with the actress playing Ophelia in the famous mad scene in Shakespeare's Hamlet? What would they ask the actress to do and how would they ask the actress to behave?
A video installation looking at these questions, called Five Truths and commissioned by the V&A; in partnership with the National Theatre was created by a group of contemporary theatre makers lead by director Katie Mitchell. The multi-screen installation brings together five interpretations of Ophelia's madness in Hamlet. Ten screens of varying sizes simultaneously play films of Ophelia interpreted dramatically through the lens of Constantin Stanislavski, Antonin Artaud, Bertolt Brecht, Jerzy Grotowski and Peter Brook.
Curated by Kate Bailey, created by director Katie Mitchell, video designer Leo Warner, set designer Vicki Mortimer, lighting designer Paule Constable and sound designer Gareth Fry, starring Michelle Terry as Ophelia.

Pour en finir avec le jugement de dieu, est une création radiophonique d'Antonin Artaud, enregistrée dans les studios de la radio française entre le 22 et 29 novembre 1947. Ce texte radiophonique, une commande de l'ORTF, fut censuré la veille de sa première diffusion, et il fallut attendre 20 ans pour qu'il passe sur les ondes. C'est toute la puissance subversive d'Artaud qui y parle, qui crie, qui hurle : poésie de la cruauté, éructation verbale dénonçant avec une vigueur effrayante tout ordre moral, religieux, détruisant tous les tabous. Les textes d'Artaud lus par Maria Casarès, Roger Blin, Paule Thévenin et l'auteur, ponctués de cris, de battements de tambour et de xylophone, enregistrés par Artaud lui-même, demeurent comme un moment de radio exceptionnel en même temps que l'affirmation d' "une certaine idée de l'honneur humain", qu'Artaud n'a jamais cessé de clamer, sans aucune concession et sans d'autre alternative que de "mourir à la société".

Cultural theorist Sylvère Lotringer will speak on Antonin Artaud, one of the most influential thinkers of the modernist period. He will discuss his forthcoming book, Mad Like Artaud, and will screen a selection from his new film project, The Man Who Disappeared.
As Lotringer describes, “Actor, dramaturge, poet, art critic, playwright and theorist, Antonin Artaud suffered early on from intense mental and physical dissociations. Arriving in Paris in 1922, he complained that something was destroying his thoughts and robbing him of the words that he had found. And yet these acute mental symptoms, which he controlled as best he could by using opiates, opened up the possibility of investigating ‘all the names of history’ (Nietzsche), ‘performing’ their works and predicament as if they were his own. In that way he managed to become, among others, Paolo Uccello, Pierre Abelard, Heliogabalus, Gérard de Nerval, Baudelaire, Edgar Allen Poe, and Vincent Van Gogh. And these names in turn became his own doubles. The black hole of his identity, from which he suffered so much—Susan Sontag said that Artaud offered the greatest quantity of suffering in the history of literature—also became an irresistible invitation for his readers to become Artaud clones.”

Sylvère Lotringer, a literary critic and cultural theorist, is professor emeritus of French literature and philosophy at Columbia University and Jean Baudrillard Chair at the European Graduate School. As the founder of the independent press Semiotext(e), he was instrumental in introducing French theory to the United States. Lotringer’s contributions range from philosophy, literature, and art to architecture, anthropology, and avant-garde movements. His publications include Antonin Artaud (Scribners & Sons, 1990), Nancy Spero (Phaidon Press, 1996); French Theory in America (Routledge, 2001); The Miserables (Semiotext(e), 2014); and Mad Like Artaud (Univocal, 2015), among many others. He has made three films: How to Shoot a Crime, with Chris Kraus (1985); Violent Femmes (1999), and The Man Who Disappeared (2015).

The painter as performer, as magician, as shaman, as athlete. In WAX LATEX MUD Jager explored the complex relationship between the viewer and the work of art by putting his performance-body at the service of painting, where painting becomes both revelation and sacrificial action. The body in question is the Anonymous Body (AB) that lies beneath the social and autobiographical detail that constitutes Dirk Jan Jager from the Low Countries. The AB is the Homo-Universalis, the unit of one body, the measure of man. The AB is always present, but unrecognized until forced with violence or despair to appear: Marsyas flayed by Apollo, maddened Orestes, and Nan Goldin's drug-addled drag queens of New York. It is the AB that is addressed by both George Bataille and Antonin Artaud, "Joy before death" and the "Body without organs." It is always at the edge of the void that we find the AB. Speechless, but always aware, always in focus, always prepared.

SINOPSYS
Metachaos, from Greek Meta (beyond) and Chaos (the abyss where the eternally-formless state of the universe hides), indicates a primordial shape of ameba, which lacks in precise morphology, and it is characterized by mutation and mitosis.
In fact the bodies represented in METACHAOS, even though they are characterized by an apparently anthropomorphous appearance, in reality they are without identity and conscience. They exist confined in a spaceless and timeless state, an hostile and decadent hyperuranium where a fortress, in perpetual movement, dominates the landscape in defense of a supercelestial, harmonic but fragile parallel dimension. In its destructive instinct of violating the dimensional limbo, the mutant horde penetrates the intimacy of the fortress, laying siege like a virus. Similar to the balance of a philological continuum in human species, bringing the status of things back to the primordial broth.
STATEMENT
METACHAOS is a multidisciplinary audio-visual project, articulated in a short film, a set of photography (http://www.alessandrobavari.com/english/Metachaos-photographies/gallery_Metachaos-photographic_series.htm) and mix-technique paintings. The purpose of the project is to represent the most tragic aspects of the human nature and of its motion, such as war, madness, social change and hate. An accretion of feelings that are metaphorically represented by specific visual forms, which are abstract conceptually, but concrete and tangible formally. The application of acid and monochromatic tints, besides the strong contrasts, makes everything intentionally more oppressive and tragic.
In order to obtain a more immersive and plausible version, the shot was taken adopting the camera live technique. The extreme and frenetic motion of the shoulder camera, similar to the subjective one, becomes a main constant, so that, along with the persisting cuts used to edit the video, create a bigger sense of instability and danger. In fact, thanks to the dissemination of Technology, it is possible to notice that the unconscious-esthetic potential of the shots available on Youtube, characterized by a pseudo-documentary and amateur approach, often offer an unexpected emotional involvement, which trigger an exhibitionistic-voyeuristic interchange between the author and the consumer.
The irrational gesture and action of the bodies, as if a collective form of madness controlled them, are inspired by artists like Bosch and Bruegel who, between the ‘400 and ‘500, produced an iconography where irrational images show sickly madness and pain.
The project has been realized using different techniques: live shots taken in discharged industrial sites, CGI animations, tracking and motion captures, besides various other analogical ones.
American Jeff Ensign, aka Evolution Noise Slave composed the original sound track, which has been progressively updated during the video production. The musical score was inspired by 6 separate pieces Jeff had previously created that were then combined into a hybrid. The composition was also based in part from a sonic interpretation of the ideas presented in Antonin Artaud’s the Theater and Cruelty overlaid on Bavari’s images.

Alessandro Bavari’s “Metachaos” is an impressive display of the amazing graphics that can be produced with leading-edge hardware and software. The 8-minute clip begins with a sequence of clear, geometric forms that suggest a serene world. But it doesn’t take long until it’s apparent that this was just the calm before the storm. Shadowy creatures and shockingly grotesque figures intrude into this domain rendered in black & white and sepia tones and rip it to pieces. Using the interplay of light and shadow, intentionally shaky camera movements and quick cuts, Bavari takes us on a tour de force through an unsettling imaginary cosmos that grips viewers and doesn’t let them loose. SINOPSYS
Metachaos, from Greek Meta (beyond) and Chaos (the abyss where the eternally-formless state of the universe hides), indicates a primordial shape of ameba, which lacks in precise morphology, and it is characterized by mutation and mitosis.
In fact the bodies represented in METACHAOS, even though they are characterized by an apparently anthropomorphous appearance, in reality they are without identity and conscience. They exist confined in a spaceless and timeless state, an hostile and decadent hyperuranium where a fortress, in perpetual movement, dominates the landscape in defense of a supercelestial, harmonic but fragile parallel dimension. In its destructive instinct of violating the dimensional limbo, the mutant horde penetrates the intimacy of the fortress, laying siege like a virus. Similar to the balance of a philological continuum in human species, bringing the status of things back to the primordial broth.
STATEMENT
METACHAOS is a multidisciplinary audio-visual project, articulated in a short film, a set of photography (http://www.alessandrobavari.com/english/Metachaos-photographies/gallery_Metachaos-photographic_series.htm) and mix-technique paintings. The purpose of the project is to represent the most tragic aspects of the human nature and of its motion, such as war, madness, social change and hate. An accretion of feelings that are metaphorically represented by specific visual forms, which are abstract conceptually, but concrete and tangible formally. The application of acid and monochromatic tints, besides the strong contrasts, makes everything intentionally more oppressive and tragic.
In order to obtain a more immersive and plausible version, the shot was taken adopting the camera live technique. The extreme and frenetic motion of the shoulder camera, similar to the subjective one, becomes a main constant, so that, along with the persisting cuts used to edit the video, create a bigger sense of instability and danger. In fact, thanks to the dissemination of Technology, it is possible to notice that the unconscious-esthetic potential of the shots available on Youtube, characterized by a pseudo-documentary and amateur approach, often offer an unexpected emotional involvement, which trigger an exhibitionistic-voyeuristic interchange between the author and the consumer.
The irrational gesture and action of the bodies, as if a collective form of madness controlled them, are inspired by artists like Bosch and Bruegel who, between the ‘400 and ‘500, produced an iconography where irrational images show sickly madness and pain.
The project has been realized using different techniques: live shots taken in discharged industrial sites, CGI animations, tracking and motion captures, besides various other analogical ones.
American Jeff Ensign, aka Evolution Noise Slave composed the original sound track, which has been progressively updated during the video production. The musical score was inspired by 6 separate pieces Jeff had previously created that were then combined into a hybrid. The composition was also based in part from a sonic interpretation of the ideas presented in Antonin Artaud’s the Theater and Cruelty overlaid on Bavari’s images.

Alessandro Bavari’s “Metachaos” is an impressive display of the amazing graphics that can be produced with leading-edge hardware and software. The 8-minute clip begins with a sequence of clear, geometric forms that suggest a serene world. But it doesn’t take long until it’s apparent that this was just the calm before the storm. Shadowy creatures and shockingly grotesque figures intrude into this domain rendered in black & white and sepia tones and rip it to pieces. Using the interplay of light and shadow, intentionally shaky camera movements and quick cuts, Bavari takes us on a tour de force through an unsettling imaginary cosmos that grips viewers and doesn’t let them loose.
