Borough Market is a wholesale and retail food market in Southwark, Central London, England. It is one of the largest and oldest food markets in London.
The retail market operates on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 5pm, Fridays from 10am to 6pm, and Saturdays from 8 am to 5 pm. The wholesale market operates on all weekday mornings from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m.
The present market, located on Southwark Street and Borough High Street just south of Southwark Cathedral on the southern end of London Bridge, is a successor to one that originally adjoined the end of London Bridge. It was first mentioned in 1276, although the market itself claims to have existed since 1014 "and probably much earlier" and was subsequently moved south of St Margaret's church on the High Street. The City of London received a royal charter from Edward VI in 1550 to control all markets in Southwark (see Guildable Manor), which was confirmed by Charles II in 1671. However, the market caused such traffic congestion that, in 1754, it was abolished by an Act of Parliament.
A borough is an administrative division in various countries. In principle, the term borough designates a self-governing walled town, although in practice, official use of the term varies widely.
The word borough derives from common Germanic *Burg, meaning fort: compare with bury, burgh and brough (England), burgh (Scotland), Burg (Germany), borg (Scandinavia), burcht (Dutch), boarch (West Frisian), and the Germanic borrowing present in neighbouring Indo-european languages such as borgo (Italian), bourg (French), burgo (Spanish and Portuguese), burg (Romanian), purg (Kajkavian) and durg (दर्ग) (Hindi) and arg (ارگ) (Persian). The incidence of these words as suffixes to place names (for example, Aldeburgh, Bamburgh, Tilbury, Tilburg, Strasbourg (Strossburi in the local dialect), Luxembourg, Edinburgh, Grundisburgh, Hamburg, Gothenburg) usually indicates that they were once fortified settlements.
In the Middle Ages, boroughs were settlements in England that were granted some self-government; burghs were the Scottish equivalent. In medieval England, boroughs were also entitled to elect members of parliament. The use of the word borough probably derives from the burghal system of Alfred the Great. Alfred set up a system of defensive strong points (Burhs); in order to maintain these settlements, he granted them a degree of autonomy. After the Norman Conquest, when certain towns were granted self-governance, the concept of the burh/borough seems to have been reused to mean a self-governing settlement.

Several historical bridges named London Bridge have spanned the River Thames between the City of London and Southwark, in central London. The current crossing, which opened to traffic in 1974, is a box girder bridge built from concrete and steel. This replaced a 19th-century stone-arched bridge, which in turn superseded a 600-year-old medieval structure. This was preceded by a succession of timber bridges, the first built by the Roman founders of London.
The current bridge stands at the western end of the Pool of London but is positioned 30 metres (98 ft) upstream from previous alignments. The traditional ends of the medieval bridge were marked by St Magnus-the-Martyr on the northern bank and Southwark Cathedral on the southern shore. Until Putney Bridge opened in 1729, London Bridge was the only road-crossing of the Thames downstream of Kingston-upon-Thames. Its importance has been the subject of popular culture throughout the ages such as in the nursery rhyme "London Bridge Is Falling Down" and its inclusion within art and literature.
London i/ˈlʌndən/ is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. It was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms Greater London, a region of England governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The conurbation also covers two English counties: the small district of the City of London and the county of Greater London. The latter constitutes the vast majority of London, though historically it was split between Middlesex (a now abolished county), Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.

Borough Market is one of the oldest markets in London and I come to borough market quite a bit throughout the year because it’s possibly the best source of exceptional British & international food & drink in London. Its just across the road from London Bridge Train & Tube Station and the Shard Building. On this trip we visit Monmouth coffee for a cup of coffee and some beans to use at home, Neils Yard Dairy for Cheese, Roast Restaurant for one of their British Roast Dinner roasted meat baguettes, Bread ahead bakery & bakers for some bread & doughnuts, Brindisa London Bridge Spanish foods & Tapas bar / BBQ for a chorizo roll, a duck confit sandwich from Le Marché du Quartier The shops, pubs, bars & restaurants open pretty much every day but the market doesn't, I will put a link below to the...
Borough Market is one of the most famous and renowned fresh markets in London. Get all information here: http://migrationology.com/2014/05/borough-market-london/ There are many famous things to do in London, but if you're a food lover like I am, one of the best choices you can make it to take a trip to the historical Borough Market. The market is one of the most well-known in all of London. The history goes way back, and it was formerly a place where people came and gathered to trade and sell their fresh produce. For many years it was very informal and without structure. But the official Borough Market was established in 1885, the place that we can visit today. We were only in London for a couple of days, attending the Chowzter.com food awards (http://chowzter.com/), and one thing I knew...

Disclaimer* I do not own the rights to this video. I'm uploading this purely to shut up all these idiot conspiracy theorists suggesting foul play because there's no cctv footage. Total rubbish, have none of these people ever considered that maybe, just maybe the powers that be decide that showing cctv of people being murdered on British TV is sensitive? For the families and friends? Or the possibility of someone seeking revenge after becoming enraged by seeing such atrocities.

A security guard who oversees a number of pubs in the area has told the BBC he saw four people stabbed by three attackers. The man, who was deeply shocked and asked not to be named, said he was at the Market Porter pub when a colleague at another bar said there was a stabbing at the Borough Bistro pub nearby. He said he went towards this pub and saw that "everybody started running" and there was screaming. The eyewitness added that he saw three attackers, one of whom had a long knife and stabbing people, including a girl in her early 20s. An insight and celebration of London’s most renowned food market. Borough Market is an independent, quality food market, rooted in the local community. I wanted to capture its bustling pace, diversity of produce, range of customers and its community of remarkable traders.
This is an ongoing project for my Motion Techniques 2 class. The concept is a short extract from a bedtime story by Jonathan Safran Foer about New York City's imaginary 6th Borough. The 6th Borough is an "island separated from Manhattan by a thin body of water, whose narrowest crossing happens to be the width of the world's long jump record." A huge party is held for the yearly leap, and for the few moments the jumper is in the air, the whole of New York City is capable of flight. On September 24th, 2009, I created a monumental sculpture from 3,615 pounds of second hand clothing. The resulting piece was a 5 x 7 foot cube made in 4 sections. Why 3,615 pounds? That's the amount of textile waste created by New Yorkers every 5 minutes. This event, hosted by the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education, was part of the 5th Annual Green Brooklyn...Green City Fair and Symposium at Brooklyn Borough Hall and Columbus Park. Clothing for the event was loaned by the textile recycling company, Wearable Collections. © Derick Melander, 2010, Video by Adam Kaufman

The project was part of the University of Cincinnati's Indrustrial Design program. Our studio, 3rd year students, had the opportunity to work with people in the industry to create electric bicycles. Our studio split into 5 teams of around 4-6 people each and created different concepts for different market segments. The photos here represent just on of the groups work (urban commuters) and the final critique.
Experimenting with my new hi-fps camera... This time 240 fps - native frame rate, around Borough Market. Today, in the afternoon I realized a beautiful sun light just around the corner of Monmouth Cafe (Stoney St X Park St). So, I decided to stay a while and capture people with available light. In my previous trial, I wasn't quite happy with low-light abilities of the camera, so I wanted to give a go under strongest light possible... As a strong contrast to slo-mo visuals, I chose a hi-bpm electronic soundtrack - with matching visual cuts to imply motion... With my special thanks to all Londoners using Park Street today - as Clink Street was closed due to road works. ................................... Beautiful Places is a personal project where I post my visual travel diaries. This...
London's Borough Market has got over 100 food stalls , with a huge variety on offer – fresh greens and fruits and meats and cold cuts and cheeses, to delicious lunch, hot prepared, pastas, Indian, Egyptian, sandwiches, sausage, paella, fish – all kinds of foods for every taste. The market include several restaurants where you can sit down and have a meal or glass a wine, coffee shops and cafés, and there are a couple of restaurants upstairs. You might consider taking a good walk through the market first before you stop at any one booth to buy something to eat, and take a good look around if you can stand all the temptation and suspense, and just keep walking, be patient, have fun, build up an appetite, maybe do a little snacking on some free samples It's a great place for people-watchin...

There’s something coming
And its coming for you
The mob is restless
Looking for something new
You lead us here
With an eternal promise
The gallows are calling
For you to pay for this
Now that we’re left here on our own
There is nowhere left to turn
Who will see me through?
Your heroes are dead
They were all in you head
When nothing is left we’ll start again
What fitting ends
To our fearless fathers
The cost of treason
Isn't paid in dollars
With nothing left
There is nothing to lose
We’ll watch the city gates
Falling all around you
You said id never make it
That I could only fail
But I'm the one who’s standing
And what has happened to you?
Now that we’ve said goodbye to you
We’ve started something new
Your heroes are gone
They left with the dawn
