At “La Guzmana,” in the picturesque town of San José de las Matas, works Angelica Santos, a beautiful young orphan who has been brought up in poverty by her wicked aunt Roberta. During the day, Angelica rolls cigars with the utmost care and respect for her country’s traditions; but at night, she is forced to wait tables at her aunt’s shabby bar, where the worst kind of men are always trying to take advantage of her. Angélica dreams of escaping that terrible environment, fearing that one day her aunt will demand that she give into her customers’ sordid wishes, but she sees no way out, until she is given the opportunity to participate in a new beauty contest launched in the capital by one of the Guzmáns’ television networks.
Angelica’s decision to compete in the “Caribbean Queen” pageant puts her in contact with Antonio, who is spearheading the contest. Love blossoms between them almost instantly and this incredibly fortunate turn of events promises to radically change Angelica’s life. But evil lurks near the loving couple, as Antonio’s snobbish mother, his bitter ex-girlfriend and his greedy brother Juan Pablo connive to separate them. The three villains conspire with Angelica’s aunt Roberta, who arrives in the capital in search of easy blackmail money after reading about Angelica and Antonio in the newspaper, and together the four of them make plans to expose the young woman’s fabricated past as a prostitute.

Trópico (telenovela)
Tropico is a telenovela produced and filmed entirely in the Dominican Republic by Venevisión International, Iguana Productions and Antena Latina. It is a remake of the 1997 Peruvian telenovela Escándalo.
Most of the cast and crew are Dominicans, except Jose Luis Rodriguez and Scarlet Ortiz who are Venezuelans, Javier Delgiudice and Giovanna Valcárcel who are from Peru; and Victor González who is a Mexican actor.
Plot
Set in the beautiful beaches and the capital of the Dominican Republic, this melodrama revolves around the young, provincial Angelica Santos (Scarlet Ortiz) who works in the local tobacco hacienda "La Guzmana". Angelica leaves her home to get away from her unscrupulous aunt, and goes to Santo Domingo. Then she joins a beauty pageant sponsored by Guillermo Guzman and there she meets and falls in love with Antonio Guzman. Their love is quickly torn apart by Antonio's brother and Angelica's aunt, who conspire against them.

Scarlet Ortiz
Scarlet Ortiz (born Hevis Scarlet Ortiz Pacheco in Caracas, Venezuela in March 12, 1974) is a Venezuelan actress known for her role in telenovelas.
Biography
Scarlet started her acting career in a children's show called Nubeluz in Venezuela. She also participated in Miss Venezuela 1992 as Miss Sucre.
In July 2009 the Spanish language edition of People Magazine reported that she was pregnant from her boyfriend Yul Bürkle and on March 9, 2010 she gave birth to a baby girl in Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami and named her Barbara Briana. Her chosen godparents will be the actress Gaby Espino and the soap opera writer Alberto Gomez.
In 2012, Scarlet made her debut as a theater actress in the stage play Las Quiero a las dos in Miami where she played the role of a married man's mistress.
She returned to her native country of Venezuela to star as the protagonist in the telenovela Dulce Amargo after 12 years of working abroad. The last telenovela she recorded in Venezuela was Mis 3 hermanas.
