The Culture is a fictional interstellar anarchist utopian society created by the Scottish writer Iain M. Banks, which features in a number of his space opera novels and works of short fiction, collectively called the Culture series.
In the series, the Culture is composed of several inter-bred humanoid species, as well as machines with intelligences ranging from basic computers, to human-equivalent drones, to superintelligent artificial intelligences called Minds. The Culture's economy is maintained automatically by its non-sentient machines, with high-level work entrusted to the Minds' subroutines, which allows its humanoid and drone citizens to indulge their passions, romances, hobbies, or other activities, without servitude. Many of the series' protagonists are humanoids who choose to work for the Culture's elite diplomatic or espionage organisations, and interact with other civilisations whose citizens hold wildly different ideologies, morals, and technologies.
The Culture has a grasp of technology which is advanced relative to most of the other civilisations which share the galaxy. There are a few Elder civilizations far more advanced than the Culture, but they tend to keep to themselves. Other civilizations have "Sublimed," or transitioned to some unknowable higher dimension or state of existence and have apparently lost interest in the mundane goings on of more corporeal beings. Most of the Culture's citizens do not live on planets but in or on artificial habitats, such as huge orbitals, or on ships, the largest of which are home to billions of individuals. Biologically, the Culture's citizens have been genetically enhanced to live for centuries, and have modified mental control over their physiology, including the ability to introduce a variety of psychoactive drugs into their systems, change gender, or switch off pain.
Culture (/ˈkʌltʃər/) is, in the words of E.B. Tylor, "that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society."
Cambridge English Dictionary states that culture is, "the way of life, especially the general customs and beliefs, of a particular group of people at a particular time."Terror Management Theory posits that culture is a series of activities and worldviews that provide humans with the illusion of being individuals of value in a world meaning—raising themselves above the merely physical aspects of existence, in order to deny the animal insignificance and death that Homo Sapiens became aware of when they acquired a larger brain.
Iain Banks (16 February 1954 – 9 June 2013) was a Scottish author. He wrote mainstream fiction under the name Iain Banks and science fiction as Iain M. Banks, including the initial of his adopted middle name Menzies (i/ˈmɪŋᵻz/).
After the publication and success of The Wasp Factory (1984), Banks began to write on a full-time basis. His first science fiction book, Consider Phlebas, was released in 1987, marking the start of the popular The Culture series. His books have been adapted for theatre, radio and television. In 2008, The Times named Banks in their list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945". In April 2013, Banks announced that he had inoperable cancer and was unlikely to live beyond a year. He died on 9 June 2013.
Banks was born in Dunfermline, Fife, to a mother who was a professional ice skater and a father who was an officer in the Admiralty. An only child, Banks lived in North Queensferry until the age of nine, near the naval dockyards in Rosyth where his father was based. Banks's family then moved to Gourock due to the requirements of his father's work. When someone introduced him to science fiction by giving him Kemlo and the Zones of Silence, a book in the Kemlo series, he continued reading it which made him want to write science fiction himself. After attending Gourock and Greenock High Schools, Banks studied English, philosophy and psychology at the University of Stirling (1972–1975).

What is our culture without the people who document it? Gunner Stahl—a 25-year-old photographer from Atlanta, Georgia—does exactly that. Over the past few years, he's made a name for himself by capturing intimate moments of many of our culture's most celebrated figures. With a photography style that can be described simply as pure and a laid-back demeanor, Gunner has made it his business to be in the right place at the right time and has found success by just being himself. Simone Caroti joins us to discuss his new book The Culture Series of Iain M. Banks: A Critical Introduction.
This is a short fan film I ran across a few years back and since I can't seem to find it anymore on the web and as a big Iain M. Banks Culture Novel fan I thought I would post it here so others can enjoy it. The people who made it really deserve a big thumbs up.

The Culture: A Chicago Based Hip Hop Documentary Presented by Lyrical Lemonade Shot / Directed by Cole Bennett This film is to show you the versatility of Chicago as it is a city that truly cannot be pinpointed when it comes to genre of hip hop. You will se different perspectives of the city throughout The Culture, yet everyone is chasing the same dream. Although violence is an aspect of Chicago that you cannot be ignorant to, this city is way more than just that. This film intentionally has no narration for the reason that narrations are intended to mold a perspective - this is for you to form your own. I hope everyone enjoys it, I spent a lot of time putting this together! My apologies for the audio problems, I used an iPhone microphone to capture the audio due to it being a no bud...

To the rhythm of mariachis and traditional dancing, the film by Pierre Brouwers guides you across Yucatan, this Mexican state that juts out into the Caribbean sea. From the white sandy beaches of the Maya river to huge green expanses where the sites of Calakmul or Coba barely emerge from the forest, the cameras take you to not only the most prestigious Maya sites, but also other lesser known locations that from an archaeological perspective are just as interesting. Spectacular caves and rocks, mangroves and nature reserves form the décor in which one of America’s most fascinating civilizations developed and flourished.
Ray Dalio, the billionaire founder of the Bridgewater investment firm, has more than a few ideas about the right way to build a culture. In fact, he has hundreds of them, ranging from radical transparency (criticism is both welcomed and encouraged at Bridgewater, so there is no good reason to talk behind people’s backs) to being simultaneously assertive and open-minded. Dalio explains the importance of his principles in work and in life, and shares his favorites. What a surprise
What a surprise
I knew I'd find you here
Sitting against the ugly tree
It's not why this innocent girl, don't be scared
Yes I'm in love with you, all the things you put me through
Yes I'm in love with you, all the things you put me through
No I'm not in love with you, the things you put me through
I don't know what to do, the things that you put me through
5, 4, 3, 2, 1 lets go...
I can't seem to be looking for anything
Fast let me tell you that
Stand strong, and don't preform till the sun comes up
Just dance
Touch me, I'll touch you back
Just dance and feel the music
Please don't go away, smoke a little more in enough
Hey you're back but now you're leaving soon
Tonight I'll be seen, just run away dreaming
I'm not as jealous as they come
Turn your back to the dance floor
I'm not as a champion
Turn your back to the dance floor
Just tell me
Just tell me
Just tell me
Just tell me
Just tell me
Do you care to dance?
