Brief overview of the Colt .45 ACP Series 80, including closeup video segments, and target shooting. The era of the 1911 .45 ACP semiautomatic handgun on the TNOUTDOORS9 channel begins with this video. I have owned handguns since 1987 but until this point had never owned one in the 1911 platform. Handling the 1911 is an absolute pleasure; reliability and accuracy out of the box are spot-on. Recoil is quite controllable for fast, accurate follow-up shots.
I could not have gotten too far into 2011, the 100th anniversary of the 1911 platform, without acquiring a 1911 handgun. The Colt was my first choice, with the Model 80 or 70 Series at the top of the list, Colt Commander being next. After Colt, Springfield would have likely been my next option. This gun was acquired new from a dealer for $799. At the date of this video production, Colt 1911's, in particular the Series 80, are difficult if not impossible to locate in my area. Mine was purchased from an East TN dealer exhibiting at a Nashville-area gun show.
Shooting segments are with 230 gr FMJ at steel targets from 40 feet up to 55-60 yards.
This firearm will be used for a variety of purposes on the channel, including ammo tests. I have absolutely no plans to make any modifications to this handgun; the setup will remain as you see it in this video.
All shooting was performed safely on private property, in my backyard.

Congress declared the Eagle the official symbol of the United States in 1782. .45 Colt
The .45 Colt (metric designation: 11.48×35mmR) cartridge is a handgun cartridge dating to 1872. It began as a black-powder revolver round developed for the Colt Single Action Army revolver, but is also offered as a magnum-level, handgun hunting round in modern usage. This cartridge was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1873 and served as an official US military handgun cartridge for 14 years. It is sometimes referred to as .45 Long Colt or .45LC, to differentiate it from the shorter .45 S&W Schofield, as both were used by the Army at the same period of time prior to the adoption of the M1887 Govt.
History
The .45 Colt was a joint development between Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company, of Hartford, Connecticut, and the Union Metallic Cartridge Company of Bridgeport, Conn. Colt began work on the revolver in 1871, and submitted a sample to the U.S. Army in late 1872. The revolver was accepted for purchase in 1873.

.45 caliber ammunition
.45 caliber ammunition comprises bullets (approximately 0.45 inch in diameter), first standardized by Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company in 1872.
That original .45 Colt round was developed along with the Colt Single Action Army revolver for the U.S. Army.
The .45-70 cartridge followed the next year, developed at the Army's Springfield Armory for the breech-loading Springfield Model 1873 rifle.
The .45 ACP is a cartridge designed by John Browning in 1904, for use in the prototype Colt semi-automatic .45 pistol he also designed. This ammunition also served the M1911 pistol adopted by the Army in 1911.
The .45 GAP is a variant of the regular .45 cartridge, designed on behalf of Glock for more compact handguns.

M1911 pistol
The M1911 is a single-action, semi-automatic, magazine-fed, recoil-operated pistol chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. It served as the standard-issue sidearm for the United States Armed Forces from 1911 to 1986. It was first used in later stages of the Philippine–American War, and was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The pistol's formal designation as of 1940 was Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911 for the original model of 1911 or Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911A1 for the M1911A1, adopted in 1924. The designation changed to Pistol, Caliber .45, Automatic, M1911A1 in the Vietnam era.
In total, the U.S. procured around 2.7 million M1911 and M1911A1 pistols in military contracts during its service life. The M1911 was replaced by the 9mm Beretta M9 pistol as the standard U.S. sidearm in October 1986, but due to its popularity among users, it has not been completely phased out. Modernized derivative variants of the M1911 are still in use by some units of the U.S. Army Special Forces, the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps.

The era of the 1911 .45 ACP semiautomatic handgun on the TNOUTDOORS9 channel begins with this video. I have owned handguns since 1987 but until this point had never owned one in the 1911 platform. Handling the 1911 is an absolute pleasure; reliability and accuracy out of the box are spot-on. Recoil is quite controllable for fast, accurate follow-up shots. I could not have gotten too far into 2011, the 100th anniversary of the 1911 platform, without acquiring a 1911 handgun. The Colt was my first choice, with the Model 80 or 70 Series at the top of the list, Colt Commander being next. After Colt, Springfield would have likely been my next option. This gun was acquired new from a dealer for $799. At the date of this video production, Colt 1911's, in particular the Series 80, are difficult if not impossible to locate in my area. Mine was purchased from an East TN dealer exhibiting at a Nashville-area gun show. Shooting segments are with 230 gr FMJ at steel targets from 40 feet up to 55-60 yards. This firearm will be used for a variety of purposes on the channel, including ammo tests. I have absolutely no plans to make any modifications to this handgun; the setup will remain as you see it in this video. All shooting was performed safely on private property, in my backyard. -

Brief overview of the Colt .45 ACP Series 80, including closeup video segments, and target shooting. The era of the 1911 .45 ACP semiautomatic handgun on the TNOUTDOORS9 channel begins with this video. I have owned handguns since 1987 but until this point had never owned one in the 1911 platform. Handling the 1911 is an absolute pleasure; reliability and accuracy out of the box are spot-on. Recoil is quite controllable for fast, accurate follow-up shots.
I could not have gotten too far into 2011, the 100th anniversary of the 1911 platform, without acquiring a 1911 handgun. The Colt was my first choice, with the Model 80 or 70 Series at the top of the list, Colt Commander being next. After Colt, Springfield would have likely been my next option. This gun was acquired new from a dealer for $799. At the date of this video production, Colt 1911's, in particular the Series 80, are difficult if not impossible to locate in my area. Mine was purchased from an East TN dealer exhibiting at a Nashville-area gun show.
Shooting segments are with 230 gr FMJ at steel targets from 40 feet up to 55-60 yards.
This firearm will be used for a variety of purposes on the channel, including ammo tests. I have absolutely no plans to make any modifications to this handgun; the setup will remain as you see it in this video.
All shooting was performed safely on private property, in my backyard.

Congress declared the Eagle the official symbol of the United States in 1782.
