Marine conservation, also known as marine resources conservation, is the protection and preservation of ecosystems in oceans and seas. Marine conservation focuses on limiting human-caused damage to marine ecosystems, and on restoring damaged marine ecosystems. Marine conservation also focuses on preserving vulnerable marine species.
Marine conservation is a response to biological issues such as extinction and habitat change. Marine conservation is the study of conserving physical and biological marine resources and ecosystem functions. This is a relatively new discipline. Marine conservationists rely on a combination of scientific principles derived from marine biology, oceanography, and fisheries science, as well as on human factors such as demand for marine resources and marine law, economics and policy in order to determine how to best protect and conserve marine species and ecosystems. Marine conservation can be seen as sub discipline of conservation biology.
Located off the northwest tip of Bird's Head Peninsula on the island of New Guinea, in Indonesia's West Papua province, Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, is an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, cays, and shoals surrounding the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta, and Waigeo, and the smaller island of Kofiau. The Raja Ampat archipelago is the part of Coral Triangle which contains the richest marine biodiversity on earth.
Raja Ampat Regency is a new regency which separated from Sorong Regency in 2004. The population of the Regency was recently (January 2014) put at 49, 048. It encompasses more than 40,000 km² of land and sea, which also contains Cenderawasih Bay, the largest marine national park in Indonesia. It is a part of the newly named West Papua province of Indonesia which was formerly Irian Jaya. Some of the islands are the most northern pieces of land in the Australian continent.
Raja Ampat is considered the global epicenter of tropical marine bio-diversity and is referred to as The Crown Jewel of the Bird's Head Seascape, which also includes Cenderawasih Bay and Triton Bay.

Marine is an umbrella term. As an adjective it is usually applicable to things relating to the sea or ocean, such as marine biology, marine ecology and marine geology. In scientific contexts, the term almost always refers exclusively to saltwater environments, although in other contexts (e.g., engineering) it may refer to any (usually navigable) body of water.

Marine Conservation Philippines is a non-profit organisation based in the Visayas region of the Philippines. Through marine research, campaigning, local outreach and conservation efforts we have joined the fight to try and change the current situation before it is too late. We dream of a future and of a sea where our kids and their kids can still marvel at grazing sea-turtles and sharks and where coastal communities enjoy adequate fish-stocks for the next generations. http://www.marineconservationphilippi... As a scuba diver and a marine conservation biologist, Julia K. Parrish frequently dives into her work with wild abandon — literally. But as the executive director of a citizen science group that organizes volunteers to monitor beach-cast seabird carcasses, Parrish even more frequently keeps both feet firmly planted on the ground — or to be more specific: on the coastline. Parrish's Seattle-based citizen science group — the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) — is devoted to advancing the science of coastal ecology and contributing to natural resources management.
This film shows how ecotourism can help give more value to Sharks and Mantas alive rather than being fished and killed and how local communities can benefit from the protection of marine life. It also shows what some nonprofit organizations are doing to help protect sharks in our oceans around the world as well as confronting the myth that sharks are man eating monsters from the deep wanting to kill humans.
Wildlife conservation programmes are vitally important in the effort to protect species and their habitats. Frontier runs several marine conservation programmes, working in some of the most biodiverse but threatened marine areas on the planet. Volunteers support our trained scientific researchers in collecting baseline data and monitoring changes in biodiversity, contributing to the protection of threatened wildlife and ecosystems, whilst having the privilege of observing wildlife in its natural habitat. Living Seas is The Wildlife Trusts' vision for the future of the UK's seas. What picture does the phrase conjure up in your mind? A rocky reef bursting with brightly coloured fish, corals and sponges? A boat trip in the company of leaping dolphins and playful seals? Fishermen hauling nets that are brimful of big, tasty fish? Living Seas are all these things and more. But the UK's seas are not Living Seas. Decades of neglect have left them damaged and degraded, a shadow of their former diversity and abundance. We urgently need your help to bring them back to life. The next five years are critical. It is literally 'make or break' time. With new laws and Government commitments in the offing, we have a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity. If we make the very best of that opportunity, pushi...
The indigenous people of Easter Island, the Rapa Nui, are connected to the ocean. Women and men fish for their families, and gather shells to craft traditional jewelry and artwork. But what happens when fish stocks decline and plastic from other countries washes up on the Easter Island coast? The Rapa Nui formed Te Mau O Te Vaikava O Rapa Nui -the Mesa del Mar- an effort made up of prominent fishing, tourism, environmental, and cultural leaders, to determine the best ways to protect their ocean waters for future generations. Narrated by Dr. Sylvia Earle, Voices from the Sea (Voces del mar) is a 40-minute documentary that tells the story of the Rapa Nui’s efforts to develop a proposal for one of the world’s largest protected areas of ocean. On October 5, 2015, Chilean President Michelle...
"Message Me" is an art project made by Planet Hero and supported by Barefoot Conservation; with kids on the remote island of Arborek in Raja Ampat West Papua where there is little fresh water or electricity. The local girls collected plastic bottles polluting the sea and beaches to write messages to other kids around the world. The aim of the project is to help raise awareness and foster marine conservation. Contrary to throwing the bottles back in the sea they are displayed on the island before recycling; and recorded by video and photos to disseminate the messages via Internet to other kids around the world and create a cross-cultural dialogue. Inspired by Eco-Feminism and the movement 1 Million Women, the project aims to empower girls globally through education and arts participati...
