Direct may refer to:
A metal (from Greek μέταλλον métallon, "mine, quarry, metal") is a material (an element, compound, or alloy) that is typically hard, opaque, shiny, and has good electrical and thermal conductivity. Metals are generally malleable — that is, they can be hammered or pressed permanently out of shape without breaking or cracking — as well as fusible (able to be fused or melted) and ductile (able to be drawn out into a thin wire). About 91 of the 118 elements in the periodic table are metals, the others are nonmetals or metalloids. Some elements appear in both metallic and non-metallic forms.
Astrophysicists use the term "metal" to collectively describe all elements other than hydrogen and helium. Thus, the metallicity of an object is the proportion of its matter made up of chemical elements other than hydrogen and helium.
Many elements and compounds that are not normally classified as metals become metallic under high pressures; these are formed as metallic allotropes of non-metals.
Direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) is an additive manufacturing technique that uses a Yb (Ytterbium) fibre laser fired into a bed of powdered metal, aiming the laser automatically at points in space defined by a 3D model, melting or rather, welding the material together to create a solid structure. DMLS was developed by the EOS firm of Munich, Germany.
The DMLS process involves use of a 3D CAD model whereby a .stl file is created and sent to the machine’s software. A technician works with this 3D model to properly orient the geometry for part building and adds supports structure as appropriate. Once this "build file" has been completed, it is "sliced" into the layer thickness the machine will build in and downloaded to the DMLS machine allowing the build to begin. The DMLS machine uses a high-powered 200 watt Yb-fiber optic laser. Inside the build chamber area, there is a material dispensing platform and a build platform along with a recoater blade used to move new powder over the build platform. The technology fuses metal powder into a solid part by melting it locally using the focused laser beam. Parts are built up additively layer by layer, typically using layers 20 micrometers thick. This process allows for highly complex geometries to be created directly from the 3D CAD data, fully automatically, in a relatively short time and without any tooling. DMLS is a net-shape process, producing parts with high accuracy and detail resolution, good surface quality and excellent mechanical properties.
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), refers to various processes used to synthesize a three-dimensional object. In 3D printing, successive layers of material are formed under computer control to create an object. These objects can be of almost any shape or geometry and are produced from a 3D model or other electronic data source. A 3D printer is a type of industrial robot.
Futurologists such as Jeremy Rifkin believe that 3D printing signals the beginning of a third industrial revolution, succeeding the production line assembly that dominated manufacturing starting in the late 19th century. Using the power of the Internet, it may eventually be possible to send a blueprint of any product to any place in the world to be replicated by a 3D printer with "elemental inks" capable of being combined into any material substance of any desired form.
3D printing in the term's original sense refers to processes that sequentially deposit material onto a powder bed with inkjet printer heads. More recently, the meaning of the term has expanded to encompass a wider variety of techniques such as extrusion and sintering-based processes. Technical standards generally use the term additive manufacturing for this broader sense.
Chop Cut Rebuild is an automotive television series first seen on Speed Channel from 2004 - 2013. Hosted by former Canadian actor Dan Woods, previously known for his role as Principal Daniel Raditch in the first four seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation.
On March 5, 2013, Fox Sports announced that it would relaunch Speed Channel as Fox Sports 1 on August 17, 2013, with significant changes in programming but retaining NASCAR coverage. On June 21, 2013, Fox Sports 1 announced that a number of series that aired on Speed Channel would not be part of the new Fox Sports 1 line up, Chop Cut Rebuild will not be part of the new network. Starting April 8, 2014, Chop Cut Rebuild will air on MAVTV.

Additive Manufacturing - Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) Technology: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) was developed jointly by Rapid Product Innovations (RPI) and EOS GmbH, starting in 1994, as the first commercial rapid prototyping method to produce metal parts in a single process. With DMLS, metal powder (20 micron diameter), free of binder or fluxing agent, is completely melted by the scanning of a high power laser beam to build the part with properties of the original material. Eliminating the polymer binder avoids the burn-off and infiltration steps, and produces a 95% dense steel part compared to roughly 70% density with Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). An additional benefit of the DMLS process compare...

Scripted by industry expert Todd Grimm, this program illustrates what happens when innovative companies capitalize on direct metal manufacturing to make dramatic changes to the way parts and tooling are designed. Highlighting achievements at Morris Technologies, Synergeering Group, DME, and The POM Group, illustrate how direct metal technology helped them to create molds and products direct from CAD data. - Morris Technologies (Cincinnati, OH): an EOS direct-metal laser sintering machine is able to deliver metal prototype parts in four days to help clients show off a new key lock. -...
Laser Deposition Technology (LDT) is a process in which metal powder is injected into the focused beam of a high-power laser under tightly controlled atmospheric conditions. The resulting deposits may then be used to build or repair metal parts for a variety of different applications. Laser Deposition Technology (LDT) is a blanket name that encompasses many "like" processes—direct metal deposition (DMD), laser metal deposition, laser additive manufacturing (LAM), and others—that use a focused laser beam as the heat source for depositing powdered metals. The key benefits of this process over traditional repair techniques are: 1) metallurgical bond versus a mechanical bond, 2) relatively low heat input, 3) minimal stress and distortion created by deposits, and 4) rapid cooling rates. "The fiery fumes radiated off the hulking mass as it trudged down the dank corridor on deck 3, vaguely heading towards the distant sound it had heard. It didn't know how it came into existence, but the only thing it knew is that it needed to hunt, to kill...to annihilate any life it felt in it's vicinity. Just then, a clanging sound of metal on metal echoed down the hallway and pierced the fragile silence. The molten beast looked up, a piteous look on it's hard face and started to stomp in the direction of the clang. The metal flooring hissed as it's burning appendages slammed into the ground, and it's deep growling moans got louder as it reached it's destination. It entered the room the sound had emanated from, looked inside and began waving it's massive head in all directions. It then st...
