Woman dies after car hit by train

Police said the woman died at the scene. Her dog was injured and had to be euthanised by a vet.

Bob McFadden, who runs the Kyogle Country Inn near the scene of the accident, compared the sound to an explosion.

"I certainly heard it," he said. "It was a terrible noise. It happened directly behind us. First we heard this weird noise and then, bang. It was like a bomb going off."

He said visibility on the roads was poor due to the heavy rain battering northern NSW.

"It's been really wet up here and it's hard to see anything," he said. "The crossing doesn't have a barrier, just a sign. In the wet, it's really dangerous because it is hard to see."

The driver of the Brisbane to Sydney XPT service was treated for shock but the 33 passengers on board were not injured.

NSW TrainLink has advised the service will be replaced by coach services between Casino and Sydney.

Police from Richmond Local Area Command are investigating.
