The Castro District, commonly referenced as The Castro, is a neighborhood in Eureka Valley in San Francisco, California. The Castro was one of the first gay neighborhoods in the United States. Having transformed from a working-class neighborhood through the 1960s and 1970s, the Castro remains one of the most prominent symbols of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activism and events in the world.
San Francisco's gay village is mostly concentrated in the business district that is located on Castro Street from Market Street to 19th Street. It extends down Market Street toward Church Street and on both sides of the Castro neighborhood from Church Street to Eureka Street. Although the greater gay community was, and is, concentrated in the Castro, many gay people live in the surrounding residential areas bordered by Corona Heights, the Mission District, Noe Valley, Twin Peaks, and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods. Some consider it to include Duboce Triangle and Dolores Heights, which both have a strong LGBT presence.
San Francisco (/sæn frənˈsɪskoʊ/), officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California and the only consolidated city-county in California. San Francisco encompasses a land area of about 46.9 square miles (121 km2) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, which makes it the smallest county in the state. It has a density of about 18,187 people per square mile (7,022 people per km2), making it the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City. San Francisco is the fourth-most populous city in California, after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose, and the 13th-most populous city in the United States—with a Census-estimated 2014 population of 852,469. The city and its surrounding areas are known as the San Francisco Bay Area, and are a part of the larger OMB designated San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland combined statistical area, the fifth most populous in the nation with an estimated population of 8.6 million.
Castro is a Romance languages (Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Galician, and Filipino) word, originally derived from Latin "Castrum", a pre-Roman military camp or fortification (cf: Greek: kastron; Proto-Celtic: * *Kassrik; Breton: kaer, *kastro). The English-language equivalent is Chester.

Harvey Bernard Milk (May 22, 1930 – November 27, 1978) was an American politician who became the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California, when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Politics and gay activism were not his early interests; he was not open about his homosexuality and did not participate in civic matters until around the age of 40, after his experiences in the counterculture of the 1960s.
Milk moved from New York City to settle in San Francisco in 1972 amid a migration of gay men to the Castro District. He took advantage of the growing political and economic power of the neighborhood to promote his interests, and ran unsuccessfully for political office three times. His theatrical campaigns earned him increasing popularity, and Milk won a seat as a city supervisor in 1977.
Milk served almost 11 months in office and was responsible for passing a stringent gay rights ordinance for the city. On November 27, 1978, Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by Dan White, another city supervisor who had recently resigned but wanted his job back. Milk's election was made possible by and was a key component of a shift in San Francisco politics.

The Castro is one of San Francisco's most recognizable neighborhoods. At the heart sits a rainbow flag, known by many names. It acts as a symbol of acceptance, which is how the Castro is defined. It's a place that is rich in history, from its initial settling in the 1880s to Scandinavians in the 1910s, to the influx of openly gay servicemen during World War II and the LGBT community in the 1970s. Its openness has been led by the inhabitants who actively sought equality: people such as Harvey Milk, whose presence is apparent even today. The Castro has a genuine San Francisco feel, due to the classic Victorian and Edwardian architecture that lines the streets. The neighborhood is located centrally in the city and easy to access via the Castro BART and various Muni lines. Sun normally domi...

In this San Francisco travel video guide, I travel to San Francisco, California, one of the most scenic cities in the United States, if not the world. In town for a conference for only four days, only one of which was going to be sunny, I headed out to see as much as I could in a day. I started my day by visiting the Haight-Ashbury district, San Francisco's most famous neighborhood. Ground zero for the Summer of Love, this neighborhood's bohemian past is still evident as you walk around the area, though things have changed quite a bit. Next I headed to the Mission District, San Francisco's "It" neighborhood right now. Home to a large and varied immigrant population, cheap rents have lured many a young and hip individual to the area, evidenced by the artisanal chocolate shops, used book s...

I lived in the Castro District from 1980 to 1986, then again from 1993 to 2000 before moving across the Bay to Oakland because housing purchases were cheaper there. We feel we never left, we see the San Francisco skyline from our living room window & we hang out there at least one day per week. So much to see and do in The Castro - one of the greatest neighborhoods of San Francisco. This is part 1 of 2, be sure to see the rest....
You're under my skin the poison within
Diabolical rapture that's dripping with sin
Break down my will, a kiss for the kill
Bury me deep between death and the thrill
Your name is desire, loins of fire
The lust incarnate, an angel, a liar
Break down my will, a kiss for the kill
Bury me deep between death and the thrill
Let glow red the poison sun and the flame to make me numb
Let me hear the words witch I have been dying to hear
Burn my fingers one by one, guide me down into the sun
Let me show you how I crave to make you come
You looked at me deep and made me weep
You gave me my sin, my soul you now keep
Broke down my will, kissed for the kill
